Joan Such occurrances usually indicate a maiden name somewhere in the line. eg. I had a William Church Friend in my tree - if I recall a grandmother (I think) had the maiden name CHURCH. Try tracing back the female lines only (yes, I realise this is more difficult pre-censuses). Also bear in mind the family may have moved into the Birchington area from elsewhere - possibly quite a distance. eg. I have PETTIT from the late 1700s in the Ebony area of Kent, and CLARK from Eastry area. Use a program like Parloc (Parish Locator) to methodically check surrounding parish registers - it may take a while, but persevere!
