Thank you Suzannah. Emily Petley CARTHEW is my GG-Aunt. I was unaware of Frederick Samuel HUGHES. He had 5 older sisters: Edith, Alice, Mabel, Kate and Ethel, but oddly his nephew Frederick HARRISON's mother is Mabel, the middle sister. Emily was born out of wedlock. Her birth was registered as Emily Petley COTHEW. There are a number of spelling variations to this surname. Three months after her birth William PETLEY married Sarah CUTHEW (my GG-Grandparents). Emily CARTHEW married on the same day as her brother William PETLEY. Despite having her brother there, her father's name and surname was still marked as illegitimate on the marriage certificate. Frederick Arthur HARRISON was born in 1909 and died in 1995. I still have a little doubt over Mabel HUGHES' death registration, but it appears to be Mabel Mary HARRISON, 3Q 1978, Norwich Outer, Aged 92 She was born Mabel Mary Beatrice HUGHES, and the absence of the Beatrice and the registration in Norwich are the reasons for my doubt. -Graham Petley

The name Bax stands out to me. I have a wonderful little booklet called "The people called Quakers, or Not a bed to lie in" written by Elizabeth Hudson, which relate the tale of John Love who married a Martha Bax on Christmas day 1664 at St Nicholas Church in Ash.As the title suggests, they were Quakers and suffered severe persecution for their faith. I have traced my mothers line (Love) back to Richard Love, born 1733 in Ash, but have been unable to forge a link between him and John. Hopefully if there are any Bax line they MAY be able to help with a link that I feel is probably there. Hi Dave I checked the electoral rolls and found that Robert Thomas Kinglong Solly and his wife Elizabeth Sarah Jane Solly nee Farnell moved into 11 Duke Street in 1928. Clara had joined them by 1930 and just the three of them lived at this property. I photocopied the year 1936 for you as the information stays the same so thought no point photocopying every year. They had married 1916 and wonder if the names mean anything to you. Robert was born 1888 in Margate, Elizabeth 1888 in Lewisham. It may be worth a look seeing who else in the household of the 1911 census for Robert Solly. I also checked the death announcement in the Thanet Gazette for 1940 and nothing for Clara. You could email Thanet Crematorium, see if she is buried in Margate and see who with? Regards Suzannah Margate Local & Family History

Just a few questions. Do you have her death certificate? Who was the informant. Where was Clara on the 1901 Census. Could you send me a copy of the 1911 census where you have found Albert with the Kimm family. Only one problem with the directories, I can check number 10 Duke Street working backwards but it depends who the householder was. Did the Chapman family have any family connection to the Solley's or was Clara just boarding here? Hi List! Looks like those Bax's have been in the area for a long time. I have a Sarah Bax from Margate, married into my Hewitt line, born in 1783. Regards, Sally Onyett
Hi Suzanna, I have Clara Chapman birth registered In Croydon on 28th March 1856 in Old Town Croydon. I spent ages looking for the birth certificate of her son (my grandfather), Albert Edward Chapman and could not find an entry. We knew his date of birth from my father and my Aunt. An after investigating a Victorian birthday book that belonged to Clara, we found a reference to a "Albert Edward Short", whose birthday was the same as my Grandfather 5th October 1897. I sent for the birth certificate, and low and behold the mothers name was "Clara Short Late Stanley formerly Chapman". After, asking my Aunt about this she stated that Clara had Albert by a Mr. Short who had promised to marry her, but it turned out that he couldn't, because he was already married. So it looks like My great grandmother registered the birth in the anticipation of getting married. But looks like she went back to using her maiden name. We have no idea where the "Stanley" name fits in. The Chapman family became very well to do as Building materials suppliers, in Croydon and else where. I would like to find out more about Clara's movements since Croydon, but she has proved very elusive. The only other mention of her whereabouts is the statement by my father who remembered that he was told she lived with the Solley family in Margate. I think I have found my Grandfather Albert Edward Chapman, as a border in Margate in 1911 Cencus at 8 Fort Hills, with the Kimm Family. Thank you Richard, John Bax was born in Manston and the family is from the St Peters area. John stated in the 1911 census he was from Ramsgate, close enough I guess. I have recently been contacted by a fh researcher who has one Keble Fowler b 1751 in his family tree. His father was John Fowler 1719 - 1790 a corn merchant and maltster of Ipswich and St Swithuns(London). Previously I had known the Keble Fowlers only as one of the Thanet Fowler lines (probably my own, still work in progress). Back in 2004-2006 I had email exchanges with listers/Fowler researchers Amanda Bartley and Sally Hammond about the origins of the line which seems to predate the Fowler/Kibbald marriage in ?Emptage , also in 1751. While the Ipswich reference could be coincidence it seems unlikely to me, such is the rarity of Keble as a forename or middle name.. I do realise that Thanet was well connected to both places by sea and road. Can anyone suggest a more tangible link between Thanet and Ipswich or St Swithiuns? many thanks Dick Fowler KFHS 9342,DFHS 13423
Thanet Times 3rd March 1981 Snowdrops were in memory of baby's death A mass of snow drops in the Churchyard at St Mary's Church, MInster, were first planted on the grave of a 12 month old boy who died in 1895. Mr HARRISON now 72, is named after the baby Frederick Samuel HUGHES, born in 1894 to Samuel and Emily HUGHES, who were married at Monkton in 1880. He was still there in 1923. Thank you so much for checking. Once again you are "Johnny on the spot". :-) :-) This is REALLY strange. I can't imagine what a 12 year old orphaned girl would be doing having an OFFICIAL residence at a home where not a single surname of the occupants has thus far ANY affiliation with my family. That also raises the question as to where was my younger mother, and her even younger brother? I was unaware that the library holds these directories. Do they have an on line presence? Will they do lookups? For a fee? Do you happen to know the year span of the directories? Do they cover the entirety of Thanet? As you know, I have many Piggott and Strevens ancestors that resided in Thanet in the early Twentieth Century.
