Kebles Gazette 22/12/1894. 'SHOCKING NEGLECT OF CHILDREN'- At the Margate Police Court on Wednesday, Arthur Twyman, of Victoria Cottages, Milton Road, was summoned on an adjourned charge of neglecting his daughters, Maud and Florence, in such a manner as to be likely to cause injury to their health. The evidence presented showed that the two children had been shockingly neglected by the defendant, and were in a filthy condition. Defendant stated that he had done what he could, but that he had had a lot of bad luck. The Mayor, speaking for the Magistrates, said the Bench considered it a very gross case and that the defendant would have to go to prison for six weeks with hard labour in each case, one sentence to follow on from the other. 13th September 1940 Air Raid Damage Photographs We are asked by the Ramsgate police authorities to draw attention to the fact that is an offence under the Control of Photography Order to take photographs of air raid damage or damage caused by enemy action. Under the order,, which is made under the Defence Regulations, it is an offence for a person to take a photograph of his own home should it have sustained damage. ....................................................... At a meeting of Broadstairs tradesmen on Tuesday it was decided that shops in the district should close at 5pm on the first three days of the week during the winter months. The chairman (Councillor W L NASH) said as trade ceased when the lights were put out every evening, it would be better for the town if they had a fixed hour for closing from October until March. ....................................................... No Sign of Panic In an article comparing air raid pluck in England, Spain, Finland and China, Mr Vincent Sheean, a famous American War correspondent, wrote in the Sunday Express, this week:- "The other day I was just driving into Ramsgate when the sirens sounded. In that unlucky town, which had a worse civilian bombing than any other I know about in England, you might have expected the people - at any rate the women- to show some signs of unusual agitation when the air invader approaches. "They did not. I saw nobody running in the streets. The women walked at a normal pace towards their shelters. Some carried blankets; some carried packets which might have contained food. In those area where raids last a long time it is well to go prepared. ............................................. Police War Reserve - Waiting List Reopened Although no immediate vacancies exist, the waiting list for the Ramsgate Police War Reserve has been reopened. The list has been considerably shortened recently by removals from the district. Those wishing to have their names put on the list should communicate with the Employment Exchange in Chapel Place. Pure coincidence. I was looking to see what War Time newspapers excerpts I have to correspond with Remembrance day coming up and I found I had copied the following some time ago! Diamond Wedding - Aged Monkton Couple Isle of Thanet Gazette 20th Oct 1928 Mr and Mrs James BAX of Walter's Hall Cottages, Monkton, celebrated their Diamond Wedding on Saturday last. The years have dealt lightly with the couple and although Mr BAX is eighty six and his wife nearly 84, they are as active as many people twenty years their juniors. Mrs BAX, still almost unassisted keeps her cottage home in the spotlessly clean condition that her parents taught her was primary duty of the housewife, and it is with the tinge of regret that she confesses that she has to 'send out the washing'. In October 1868, Mr James BAX, who was then twenty five, was married to Miss Harriet Elizabeth STUPPLES aged twenty three at Monkton Church by the Rev L Robinson. Born in Minster, Mr BAX was the son of a shepherd and has himself been associated with the land throughout his life. Commencing work at an early age, he was employed on various farms in the district until four year ago when he retired. His last situation was at Parsonage Farm, Monkton. Mrs BAX was born at Garlinge, but he parents removed to Monkton while she was still a child. The octogenarian couple have occupied only two houses, both in Monkton, during the past forty seven years and have lived at their present address for thirty five years. There are eight surviving children and two sons were killed during the Great War. Mr and Mrs BAX spent Saturday quietly in the company of their family. Margate Local & Family History
