Thank you. Technology scares the living daylights out of me! Something I have always been curious about. I only met my father's family once, just after the war when I was a child. We visited Aunt Lena, my grandmother's elder sister Selina Coleman and her daughter was there. Wendy Rogers, when I mentioned the family, said this was the posh branch of the family who had lived in Hawley Square. I must admit the aunt was a bit of a grand dame. But why were they posh? I gather the land for the farms was rented not owned. There doesn't appear to have been any money. I don't even know any stories about the family in the way my mother's family related misdemeanors and adventures. It's one of those questions that has puzzled me on how to ask it let alone find answers. You seem to have an endless knowledge of Thanet and the researchers find the most amazing info from such unlikely stories. In the IoT Gazette today it mentioned the release of names from war memorials in Margate, Birchington and Westgate on _www.margatecivicsociety.org.uk_ (http://www.margatecivicsociety.org.uk) so I had a look. There are hundreds of names from the two World Wars, including civilians and munition workers. Worth a look. Maddie
Hi List You may be able to help - I have relatives who died in 1901at Birchington - a family tragedy George Belsey Apr 1901 (Husband of Emily) Daughter Sarah - Jul 1901 - (age 4mths) Daughter Georgina Nelly - Aug 1901 - (age 3) His son George Charles - died in 1912 (age 12) So I was wondering if there was some sort of Epidemic running rife during that time. Thanks Daryl from Oz
I would be very interested in any newspaper reports about the sailing ship FORMOSA [Official Number 20189] a 97 ton schooner which entered Ramsgate 27th. December 1873 to seek shelter from a severe storm. My gt. grandfather William Robert Smith of King's Lynn was her Master and she had sailed from Antwerp on 11th. December, bound with cargo for Plymouth. The storm must have been particularly bad as she did not get very far in those 15 days, and as a result of "suffering extreme privitations" during that storm, when my gt. grandfather eventually left that ship he gave up the sea to become a businessman and ship owner in King's Lynn. I would be particularly interested in any report of the state of the ship when she limped into Ramsgate, as she remained in that port for over a month undergoing repairs. I would also be interested in any artivles referring to the repairs carried out, her crew, and anything about her cargo which she eventually took to Plymouth. During this time her Mate Andrew Blackburn deserted the ship and was convicted to 14 days imprisonment at Sandwich Jail, also losing 12 days pay through desertion and having to pay court costs of £1 12s. 00d. {this information is from her log books and Account of Voyage, copied from the Newfoundland archives}. Log book entry was dated 13th. January 1874. After completing extensive repairs she sailed from Ramsgate 26th. January to resumed her voyage to Plymouth with her cargo before heading up to Newcastle where my gt. grandfather handed over command to his brother, and left the ship.. This was a life-changing event in my gt. grandfather's interesting life, hence my particular interest in the storm and his ship's enforced stay in Ramsgate. Many thanks, Chris
My interest was aroused when I saw the word HOY in the company's title and guessed this must have been a ship owning company. Hoy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoy_(boat) For anyone interested in ship ownership, British ship ownership was, and still is required to be divided into 64 shares. This was originally to spread the considerable risk for owners in the 19th. century. Often local businessmen would take a few shares each in a ship, and it was not unusual for the ship's Master (Captain) to be invited to take a share, to give him a great involvement in the commercial aspect of 'his' ship. Taking this a stage further, it was not unusual for a one-ship company to invite the ship's Master, if he was also a share holder, to be nominated the Official Owner, even though his holding might be considerably less than other shareholders in that particular ship. This was usually when he had more experience in marine commerce than the other shareholders who may include bakers or farmers etc. It can sometimes be misleading when someone is described as a 'ship owner'. While this is normally correct, it does not necessarily mean that he/she owned all 64 shares in the vessel. It was not unusual for a widow to take on her deceased husband's shareholding. Nomination of an Official Owner was a requirement, and his or her name and address would appear in documents such as crew lists, accounts of voyages, log books, etc. Port Transcription records show the history of the ownership of a vessel while registered in a particular port, and are very useful for anyone who wants to find more about local ship owners as it shows data about the ship, her period of registry in that port, the name of shareholders and their holdings, and when they bought and sold these shares. Originally held by the local harbour authority, many of these books were disposed of, but a few years ago the 'Registrar of British Ships and Seamen' based in Cardiff, made copies available on microfiche to various institutes such as local libraries and museums. For example King's Lynn library has a set for the ships registered in her port. There may be a set at Margate. Some county archives kept origianl Port Transcription records. The remit of the Registrar of British Ships and Seamen included all British, Empire and Commonwealth registered ships and their crews. Many small ports which originally had their own registry had their registry closed in the later 19th. century to save costs, and vessels would then be registered in a larger port near by. The Registrar also held copies of all Crew Lists, the more useful and interesting Accounts of Voyages, and Log Books, but sold a lot of their archives a few years ago. Most surviving original documents were bought by the Memorial University of Newfoundand which has catalogued and made them available to the public, although to search their archives you will need a ship's Official Number. http://www.mun.ca/mha/about.php http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/searchcombinedcrews.php Greenwich - our National Maritime Museum - bought the remainder, mostly those for the years ending with a 5. http://www.nmm.ac.uk/ Greenwich offers a fine set of downloadable guides from their website for maritime research. Kew has some seamen's records, but perhaps more importantly have produced two excellent podcasts on researching seamen and ships: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/podcasts/merchant-navy-service-records.htm http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/podcasts/merchant-navy.htm although it was technically the 'Merchant Marine' until after WW1 when the title 'Merchant Navy' was granted by the King in recognition of the effort given by our unarmed mariners during that war. At the same time, the Royal Navy granted all British ship's Master the courtesy title of 'Captain'. Although it had been in common use for a long time, the legal title still is a ship's Master. A ship's Official Number was and still is issued to an individual ship when she is first entered in the Register for British ships. This may be as a newbuilt, or a vessel brought in from a non-British, Empire or Commonwealth country (including war prize-ships). The number was carved on her foremost main beam (nowadays it is written in welding) and will remain with that ship, even if she leaves the British register and returns at a later date, or if she changes her name while still on the British Registry, as often happens. A fine web site for tracking down crew lists etc. is the CLIP transcription project: http://www.crewlist.org.uk/ If anyone has difficulty finding the official number of a British vessel for further research, don't hesitate to drop me a line via this forum if it should be of interest to others, or off-list. I missed finding that Edward Rapson was also a Margate Mayor, Suzannah. Henry's father was named Edward Rapson and I think this was the only Rapson family in Margate so the 1868 mayor was probably Henry's father. Such politically minded people -- that makes three mayors of Margate: John Bayly, Edward Rapson and Edward S. Wootton. I tried to look at the Mayors of Margate website but it is no longer available. The families of Rapson, Wootton and Keble, of the Gazette, lived in houses side by side on High St. for many years in Margate. Thank you so much for continuing to give us so much, Suzannah !! Isle of Thanet Gazette 26/3/1910. 'ALARMING ACCIDENT, HORSE CRUSHED TO DEATH' - On Tuesday afternoon a horse belonging to Mr. W. SAYER, carting contractor, was killed under peculiar circumstances. About 1. 55pm. Charles LAWRENCE, George FOX, and another man named Brown, employed at the Fort Point promenade works, were engaged in lowering one of the heavy blocks of concrete, weighing about 19cwt., by a manual crane from the cliff top to the sands below when, by some means unexplained, the crane collapsed and the huge block fell a distance of about 30 feet. Immediately beneath it was the horse in question, in charge of William HEADLAM, Marlborough Road, and the heavy mass fell upon the poor animal, breaking its back. Death was almost instantaneous. The rods of the cart were smashed, but fortunately HEADLAM and the other men in the vicinity escaped injury. Margate Local & Family History
