Isle of Thanet Gazette 21st March 1944 Mr Edwin BAXTER Death of Thanet Farmer Mr Edwin BAXTER a well known Thanet farmer and prominent nationally as a greyhound owner, passed away at his home Bolingbroke Sarre, on Tuesday. Born in Margate, Mr BAXTER was 69 years old and his death followed a seven week illness. Following his education at Dr Head’s School, Margate, and St Alban’s Grammar School, Mr BAXTER entered the sausage manufacturing business established by his grandfather over 100 years ago in London. With the death of his father Mr Walter BAXTER he became governing director of the business which he extended in 1940 by opening a factory at Sarre. Between 45 and 50 tons of sausages are produced there every week. A Thousand Acres Mr BAXTER left Margate in 1921 and made his home at the picturesque residence attached to Bolingbroke Farm, which he had bought together with Elms Farm Pocock’s Farm and Sarre Court. With his later acquisition of Wallend Farm a total of over 1,000 acres came under his ownership. His great interest was coursing and mainly through his efforts Thanet became a famous coursing centre. He was elected president of the Isle of Thanet Coursing Club in 1928 and through his influence the South East of England Coursing Club patronised the St Nicholas grounds for such events as the Barbican Cup, regarded as second in importance to the Waterloo Cup. The St Nicholas meetings were attended by many titled and notable greyhound owners and MR BAXTER acted as host to them. Associated with the national Coursing Club, he entered dogs from well known ‘E.B’ kennels at Sarre in the Waterloo Cup on many occasions. He achieved his greatest successes in 1927 when Entry Badge won the first greyhound racing ‘Derby’ at White City and Ever Bright and Elder Brother came second and third. Won Trophy Three Times Mr BAXTER was donor of the Barbican Cup and in 1940 he created a record in the competition by winning the trophy for the third time with Ever Brave. Two of his dogs, Exotic Bloom and Ellen Beaton, reached the final when he won the cup for the first time at St Nicholas in 1934. Equally well known in Irish coursing circles, Mr BAXTER was a winner of the Irish International Cup. Feeling that such a luxury sport should not continue in war time, Mr BAXTER gradually closed his kennels in the early months of the war. A popular figure in Margate, he was an ex-president of the Constitutional Club and president of the Margate Club for several years. An enthusiastic angler, he won many trophies and prizes in the sport. Twice married Mr BAXTER was a widower for about 23 years. He leaves four sons and one daughter. The Funeral A service at St Pail’s Church preceded the interment at Margate Cemetery on Saturday. The Rev J B Cowell (Vicar) officiated and the service included the psalm “The Lord is my Shepherd” and the hymn “O God our help in ages past”. Mr F Wake, who was at the organ played “Andante Cantabile” (Tchaikovsky). “Evening” (Alfred Hollins) and “O rest in the Lord” (Mendelssohn). The mourners were Mr and Mrs E BAXTER and Mr and Mrs G BAXTER, (sons and daughters in law), Mr and Mrs D BOULANGER (son in law and daughter), Mrs MELL (sister) Mr and Mrs L MELL, (nephew and nice) Mr J H SKINNER, Mr Bruce BLEWITT (Solicitor) Mr W McCULLOCH (representing Mr BAXTER’s London Factory) Mr H C BATHURST and Mr William BANKS. Her 106th Birthday - Thanets Oldest Resident 31st December 1948 Thanets Oldest inhabitant, Mrs Jane CHAMPKIN, of Brenan House, Ramsgate celebrated her 106th Birthday on Christmas Eve. Among the first to congratulate her were three 'youngsters' who share the same bedroom and whose ages total 264 years. They were Mrs POINTER(89), Mrs AUSTIN (89)and Mrs GOODWIN (86). Although confined to her bed, Mrs CHAMPKIN still manages to read works by her favourite author Charles Dickens. One of her biggest birthday thrills was a letter from the Private Secretary to the Duchess of Kent, which recalled memories of a day last May when she was introduced to the Duchess at the foundation stone laying at Ramsgate General Hospital extensions. In his letter, the Private Secretary (Mr Philip HAY) wrote: "The Duchess of Kent was delighted to hear that you are to celebrate your 106th anniversary on the 24th December. Her Royal Highness well remembers meeting you when she visited Ramsgate on the 19th May and would now like to offer you her sincere congratulations on the occasion of your birthday. Her Royal Highness hopes you will spend a very happy day and has also asked me to send you her best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Born in Bridlington Yorks in 1842, five years after Victoria came to the throne, Mrs CHAMPKIN came to Ramsgate with her late husband after the 1914-1918 war. Margate Local & Family History

I haven't found anyone else by the name of Page at all in the family - I suppose the letters could have been to someone else but the frequent mention of other of my great aunts and uncles by name suggest otherwise. I was delighted to read FTM for Mac was released Nov 4. I promptly sent off to Ancestry to buy it - go to head office, right?Well software arrived 6th December - just the light advertising jacket around the CD - customers address stickers etc stuck on the back. Sides of it open so CD could be seen. Miracle CD even got here.... it could have been taken or lost out of the packet, or damaged the CD. There was no software box..... No manual. .... and I paid a total of $109 + dollars with postage and handling. Needless to say I am complaining bitterly to Ancestry. So if there are any Mac users amongst you - don't buy from Ancestry -- instead pick on a Mac store or Amazon. One of my London Mac acquaintances has got his via Amazon with proper software box and small manual. Take a look at these snaps --- you'll see why I am CROSS!!! Can you believe this?http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/5677959/1/Ancestry?h=8c48fe Best regards to all Jude
Lesley I have family PIDDUCK in Thanet. It is an unusual name so there may be a connection although I havr done little research this far back. Do you know anything about Elizabeth's family? I have a Benjamin PIDDUCK who maried a Mary Kelcherman in Eastry near Deal 29.9.1743. Their son Benjamin (bpt Canterbury 31.3.1754) married Margaret GRANT at St Nicholas 9.12.1777 It is possible your Elizabeth was a member of this family and I would be interested in any info you have on her Sandra Ager

Hello Suzannah. Another great find, thanks so much. I was aware that someone in my family was known as "Nutty" and many years ago I put a note to the list looking for him without luck. "Nutty" Albert was my grandfather's brother, and my dads sister Phyllis was married to her cousin Albert Jnr. The sporting link has now given me something new to investigate. This is another one of Walter Nelson's sons working in the Gas Works.Should have called it the Bishop Gas Works!! Robin Hi all, My 5th g grandmother Elizabeth SLADEN b 11 April 1763 Margate, bapt 24 April 1763 St John, Margate. She married 22 Jul 1780 St John, Margate, Kent to John Hewett. Thanks to all for your input - sorry I'm a little slow in responding - we have some technical problems here! In my family we were always aware of Frank Buddington as the 'only' son from William's first marriage. John was never mentioned by my grandmother or great aunts and my mum didn't know about him. As I say, I do have John's 'Little Book' from the army as well as the letter sent to my GG grandfather William when John died. I also have FJ Page's 'Little Book' I am basing the clues I have about FJ Page on some assumptions. I don't have the envelopes that went with them but they are addressed to 'mother' and talk about little Frank and Hannah and 'healthy little Tom and Ted' (my next 2 great uncles). He signs himself 'your loving son William' and in one letter 'Bill' but is always clear to show them how to address the letters:- J W Page, F Company, Chatham Barracks, Reg No 2773. (in December 1899). A year later he was writing from Malta. He also asks for the address of Alfred Horn - my GGgrandfather's sister, Mary Buddington was married to a Charles Horn. Strangely, although his name is clearly written as 'Frederick John Page' in his army book he signs it (on the same page of his 'Little Book') as F W Page. He enlisted on the 19th October 1899 at the age of 18 years and 5 months. It states that he was born in the town of Margate in Kent and was a labourer. I suppose he could have lied about his age. In any event, it looks like he would have been born before William Buddington's first marriage so maybe he was an illegitimate son. On a slight tangent, to Elizabeth Clark: are you descended from ancestors of Caroline Chesterman? If so I have some original documents that might be of interest to you including the original marriage certificate of James Chesterman and Sarah Clarke and lots more! Thanks again for your suggestions so far! Hi all, My 5th g grandmother Elizabeth SLADEN b 11 April 1763 Margate, bapt 24 April 1763 St John, Margate. She married 22 Jul 1780 St John, Margate, Kent to John Hewett. I have family for John Hewett. I have the following only on Elizabeth SLADEN: Marriage: HEWET John, St Nicholas = Elizabeth SLADEN, otp, Banns 22 Jul 1780, Mathew FOX, Sarah FOX Parents: Henry Sladen and Elizabeth Piddock ( SLADEN Henry, otp & Eliz PIDDOCK, Stonar. Banns only 8-22 Jun 1755) Marriage: 11th October 1755 at St. Mary, Minster on Thanet I have a feeling that sometimes the Sladen was spelt Sladden?? Is there anyone out there who can provide me with any information on either Henry SLADEN or Elizabeth PIDDOCK or their families?? It would be lovely to have the additional information. I have noticed on several public trees, that they have spelt Elizabeth's surname as Piccock?? Many thanks, Lesley lesleymm48@bigpond.com
Lesley How sure are you that your Elizabeth Sladden is the daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Sladden as their daughter Elizabeth was buried at St John the Baptist, Margate, Kent, England on 07 Apr 1767 aged 4 years old? Robin
