Does anyone have ready access to the early names of the clergy of St John's? I have a will of John Young of St John's dated Feb 1584/5. The man appears to be quite pious/religious and leaves his do(u)blet to father Malcolm. John's own father's name was Thomas. Was there a vicar by that name in St John's about that time, or am I to assume that he was a friar or monk living in the parish? Roger Young
1881 census, John Langston Miles Cottages By the way Mary Parker I think is still living in Thanet with her husband Victor Emptage (the chap she went with when my dad joined the RAF)The family Parker owned Parkers Fish shop (wet fish) in Margate, my aunt says they were quite well known. Found on another forum to help pinpoint it more exactly - can't find it marked on the 1910 map of Margate on site Suzannah pointed you to. > Hi Jeannette, > Dorset Place is/was next to St Johns Church - from 17 Charlotte Place to Church Square - But on the 1872 Ordnance Survey map on the Margate History site you will find Dorset Place marked running along the North of the graveyard to St John's Church. If you click on the locations on the top right hand corner and scroll down to Dorset Place & click on it you will be taken to the location. Because of my name, I was once sent by a helpful librarian doing a spring clean, a Draft Conveyance of No. 8 Ethelbert Road, The Elms, Ramsgate It's dated 10th March 1920 and is from Mrs Florence Annie Slade to Mr Alfred Edward Jeffrey. A second page relates to an Indenture made 10 March 1920 between Florence Annie Slade the wife of William Henry Slade formerly of Walton House, the Vales, Ramsgate and now of 5 Broughton Villas, Thames Street, Walton-on-Thames in the County of Surrey, Photographer, and Alfred Edward Jeffrey of 8 Ethelbert Road, The Elms Ramsgate. Hi Listers, We don't know if anyone else has had problems searching the 1911 census, when filling in "place of residence" , because they are searching, Margate, Ramsgate, etc., but the "place of residence" needs to be the Registration District, in this case Thanet. Hope this stops other listers from "tearing their hair out" as we have been doing !! Good Luck to you all, Mick & Norma Coomber.
