    1. [Isle-of-Thanet] Dixon / Frederiksen - Fathers Name on Marriage Certificate
    2. Chris Dixon
    3. I need a little help with a conundrum and would appreciate any advice on what to do next. For some time i have been trying to find out more about my fathers First Wife and specifically where/when she was born and her ancestry. However, i have come up against a wall again. Recently i found the Index reference for their marriage and the certificate finally arrived today. Robert Victor Dixon married Vera Elizabeth Frederiksen on 5th Oct 1946 in St Georges Parsh Church Ramsgate. He 22, She 29 His Father (My Grandfather) Albert Victor Dixon (this i know) - Her Father Recorded as Svend Kristian Frederiksen. I looked up Svend on Ancesty.co.uk but the only entry for this name was born in 1914 in Denmark and therefore could not be her father. However, his Father is recorded as Hans Kristian Frederiksen and Mother Karla Anderson. My Father Had 3 Children from his first marriage (My Half siblings) Eldest Son Robert, (Named after his Father) Eldest Daughter Karla. (Would assume the name chosen by Vera from someone in her family as seems to be the case for many generations in my tree. My Question is - If the Father is Deceased at marriage would a brother be entered as the Father on the certificate ?? and therefore could Svend be Veras Brother? Maybe the Parish register would tell us more? Does anyone have access to the St Georges Marriage registers for 1946? Any Help would be appreciated. Chris Dixon

    1. [Isle-of-Thanet] Art MOSS of Ramsgate ( 1916 )
    2. >From The Voice, ( Canada ) January 7, 1916. Word comes from Art MOSS to the effect that he has been invalided home from the front. He is now in Ramsgate, Kent, and since his return has witnessed four Zeppelin raids. He says they sure make some noise. When Art left Winnipeg he said he was going to pull the Kaiser's slip before he returned. A neat little Christmas card accompanies his letter, wishing all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. For the first time in the history of Winnipeg, newspapers were published on Christmas Day. The boys didn't take very kindly to the idea of crawling out of their warm cots at 6 a.m. for only a few hours' work, but that was easy compared with what it was on New Year's morning.

What I need is for someone who has access to the parish records to check if there was an age recorded beside her burial record. I believe she may be another child of Julius and Mary Hills. 2. David Railton
    3. James SAYER and Emma Ann nee SOLLEY were my gg grandparents. They married at St John's Margate in 1852. Emma can be found in the 1851 census living with her parents, James and Eleanor SOLLEY at Staple. James is shown as being born at Ash in about 1787 and Eleanor at Eastry in about 1789. That is as much as I have seen in the records. I have always been rather uncertain of this line of ancestry further back relying on others to share their information with me and not being certain if they have seen actual records or have in turn relied on others. My understanding is that Eleanor was Eleanor GARDNER and that James and Eleanor married at Ash in 1807. I also understand that James was the son of John SOLLEY and Sarah LAWRENCE who married at Ash in 1780. Is there anyone on the List who has access to parish registers for Ash who can confirm that my information is correct? Thank you David

    3. Among my great-grandfather Jabez Sackett's papers was a note: "Mr John James Sackett (94), the oldest Methodist lay preacher in Kent, lived all his life at Myrtle Cottage, Thanet, the house in which he was born, and in which he has died. He had slept under another roof only twice in all that time." This was James John (not John James) Sackett (bp 16 Apr 1820, bur 23 Feb 1914). Myrtle Cottage was at Northwood, St Lawrence. (More at http://www.sackettfamily.info/p11171.htm). It would be interesting to find out where great-grandfather Jabez got the information. I imagine it would have been a newspaper report. Quite a coincidence that JJ Sackett lived at Myrtle Cottage and WT Solley lived at Myrtle House! Anyway, I claim the prize for longest in one house. Chris Sackett

    3. David, >From my records on Garlinge WILLIAM T SOLLEY born 1860 was the son of WILLIAM and SARAH SOLLEY and brother of SARAH A SOLLEY, ELIZABETH M SOLLEY and ANN L SOLLEY. Also in 1861 census is JAMES SAYER 32, EMMA A SAYER 29, with 6 children which increase to 11 children in 1871 including ROSETTA 4 Again in 1861 there is an EMMA SOLLEY 29 and ELIZABETH SOLLEY 4 living at 4 Street Green and GEORGE SOLLEY 30 living at 5 Street Green (George is shown as a carter, Emma and Elizabeth as a carters wife and child) It would appear that GEORGE SOLLEY was the son of WILLIAM SOLLEY 50, and SUSANNAH SOLLEY 50, living at Street Green in the 1841 census In 1991 MERCY CLARKE 80 was living as a member of her grandson WILLIAM THOMAS SOLLEY's household Hope this can help you. 3. I must be related to William Thomas SOLLEY but not sure how. In 1890 Alice Elizabeth STUPPLE was born at Dent de Lion Farm, Garlinge. Alice was the daughter of Rosetta SAYER who was the daughter of Emma Ann SOLLEY (1831 - 1908), my gg grandmother. I would guess that William Thomas was the son of one of Emma Ann's brothers, children of James SOLLEY (1787-1861) and Eleanor GARDNER (1788-1864). 1. [Isle-of-Thanet] Death of Joseph John JONES, Margate 1906
    2. Suzannah Foad
    3. Isle of Thanet Gazette 17th March 1906   JONES – Death, March 5th at 23 Fort Road, Margate, Joseph John Jones aged 41 years.   Isle of Thanet Gazette 17th March 1906   IN THE CAUSE OF CHARITY Funds for Margate Life boatman’s widow.      By the death of J. J. JONES, one of the members of the Margate Lifeboat crew, who died from acute pneumonia, as the result of a cold contracted whilst on lifeboat service, the widow has been left with a family of eight very young children, and a movement has been set on foot to make some provision for the widow and orphans.   A meeting was held on Friday evening at the Parochial Hall, Hawley Street, conveyed by Mr W. H. HUGHES and at which the Mayor (Mr W. L. LEWIS J.P.) presided. Mr HUGHES explained that when he heard of the death of Mr JONES the previous Monday evening, and knowing that the widow had been left with a family of eight children, all under fifteen years of age, he felt something must be done. The same evening he brought the case, which he regarded as a particularly sad one, before the notice of the Ancient Independent Order of Oddfellows and gave notice that he proposed to arrange a big benefit concert, with the support of all the Friendly Societies in the town. On the day after her husbands death the widow received the share of the money awarded to the lifeboat crew for services rendered (£14 odd) and she had since received the funeral benefits from the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and the Trinity benefit Club, so that she was in no immediate want, but the tradesman’s debts owing, rent, rates and other outgoings would swallow up her money, and she would be left comparatively destitute.   Mr HUGHES then went on to detail the steps he had taken to enlist the sympathy and get the promise of practical help from many of the leading inhabitants of the town, and he was able to announce that he had promises of subscriptions up to that time of about £20 and further promises of subscriptions when the proper lists were prepared. He hoped the total sum realised would be such as to give the widow and her family help of a permanent nature by a judicious investment of the fund.   The Rev Michael PRYOR (Vicar of Holy Trinity) moved that a committee be formed with a view to raising a substantial sum such as Mr HUGHES had suggested. Mr G. F. BROWN J.P, seconded Mr W. G. PEARCE said he would be glad to subscribe half a guinea and if it was the wish of the committee, when the boy left school, he should be taught a trade, he would be willing to take him and pay him sufficient from the commencement to enable him to keep himself in clothing and food. Mr J .J. HERMITAGE J.P, who said he deeply sympathised with the widow, promised to do all he could to assist. Mt T.B. JEPHCOTT stated, as Hon. Secretary to the National Lifeboat Institution, that when they were put in full possession of the facts, he was sure they would do something.   Other promises of help came from Mr A BOURNE, Mr BATES, Mr G.S.R. ROLFE, Mr G SAVIN, Mr D.T. EVANS, Mr C.E. DOUGHTY and others.   The subscription list is headed with five guineas each from the Mayor of Margate, Rev M PRYOR, Mr J.T. FRIEND and the Margate Philanthropic Institution; Mr HUMPHREY, five pounds; Mr A B COBB and Capt C.T. HATFEILD three guineas. Several smaller sums of two guineas, guineas and smaller sums, totalling up to the present to over £60. Margate Local & Family History

    2. >From Evening Post, ( New Zealand ),Volume CIX, Issue 70, 24 March 1930, Page 9 MARGATE HOTEL MURDER - FOX SENTENCED TO DEATH. Earlier Record Discovered. London, 22nd March. The sentence of death passed on Sydney Harry FOX , at the Old Bailey, for the murder of his mother, Mrs. Rosaline FOX , in Room 66 at the Hotel Metropole, Margate, closes one of the most curious murder trials in recent years. The mother's body was buried, and at an inquest the verdict was " death from misadventure". Apparently everybody was satisfied it was accidental, and FOX was awaiting the £3000 insurance when an ex-Scotland Yard man employed by the insurance company became impressed by certain curious features in the policies, and also in the fire. He went quietly to Margate to investigate. Practically everything in the room at the time of the murder had been removed to the Margate rubbish tip. This was searched diligently until every article was recovered. His investigations caused the detective to telegraph to the head office, " Extremely muddy water in this business." This caused the insurance company to lay the facts concerning the fire and insurance before Scotland Yard. Investigations also showed that the very company which issued the policy had previously paid FOX £8 for an overcoat allegedly lost from the hotel cloakroom. FOX was arrested and held in gaol on the charge of not paying hotel bills throughout a whole lengthy period. Simultaneously with the sentence comes the news that a smart, good-looking man named FOX was convicted as a forger and jewel thief years ago. On one occasion FOX , under the alias of Owen SMYTHE , posed as an old Etonian, and boasted that he could stay without paying at any hotel in England. He did so in numerous cases. He invariably deposited a sealed packet with so-called valuable contents in the hotel safe. This, with his pleasant, confidential manner and clever stories, disarmed the suspicion of managers.
