Thanks for these, Michael. I wonder if anyone knows where BRANGLING is/was in Hertfordshire. I've lived in the county for nearly 40 years and have never heard of it. Could it, I wonder be BRAUGHING near Ware? Anne > > Sept. 6th 1794 MARRIAGE > On Saturday last at BRANGLING, Hertfordshire the Rev R HARVEY jun. > Vicar of ST LAURENCE , in THANET to Miss ANN WADE of BRANGLING, Herts. >
Hi Anne, It does, or at least, did exist. Search 1851 census, no name, just BRANGLING in KEYWORDS & you'll get 4 people born there. The Times, Saturday, Oct 01, 1904; pg. 10; Issue 37514; col D Police-Constable Shot At Margate.- The Margate Police having received a report of burglary in Approach Road early yesterday morning, Police Constable BURREN was sent out to make enquiries. Shortly before 8 o'clock he saw a man, said to be a foreigner, sitting on a seat on the sea front, and receiving unsatisfactory replies to his questions, he asked the man to accompany him to the police station. On the way, the man drew a revolver and fired at the constable, shooting him under the jaw. The man then ran off, but was followed by the policeman and others. Finding he was being overtaken, he shot himself behind the right ear. Both the injured men were conveyed to the cottage hospital, and on the foreigner man were found a quantity of jewelry supposed to be the proceeds of burglaries at Margate and Westgate. The Injuries in each case, are not thought to be serious. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. The Times, Saturday, Oct 20, 1821; pg. 3; Issue 11382; col F MARGATE, Oct. 16.- We have here a resident, an extraordinary character, Mr. John GYLES, who completed his 89th year on Saturday last, and is now in perfect health. This hardy veteran has been a warranted ganner in the service 63 years and a half. He fired the first gun when Hawke received his flag; and on the 14th October 1747, was in the general engagement with the French fleet under that Admiral. The next action was off Toulon under Boscawen, in 1759. The last service was in the taking of the Dutch fleet, in the year 1779. GYLES was the first man at ramsgate Pier Head, when the King sailed for the French coast, and gave his Monarch three hearty cheers on the departure SOVEREIGN yacht. He walked alone from this place without even the assistance of a stick, which, in fact, he never uses. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hi Elaine, I took a photo of the house for someone a couple of years ago - I'm not sure if I still have it, but I'll have a look for you. If I haven't still got it, I'll see if I can get to Monkton & take another one. It won't be for a couple of weeks though cos my parents are visiting from Wales. I'll look through all my photos first though, but again, it might take a day or 2. Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent To Pat & Elizabeth, Thank you for such a quick response. Yes it is Walters Hall!! Wonderful ! It is so hard sometimes to make out what the census takers wrote and being not too familiar with that area makes it equally as hard. Either that or I need new glasses. You say the place is still standing? If there is a possibility of getting a pic someday I would love to have a copy. Kindest Regards, ~Elaine
Hi Elaine, Could it be Walter's Hall ??? If so, it's still standing & is a farm. It's on the main road into Monkton from Minster. Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent Hello list, I was wondering if any one knew about a place called Walthen (sp?) Hall in Monkton. My Amelia HAYWARD worked there as a house servant in 1861 for the COLLETT family just before she married Stephen FRIGHT in 1862. If nothing else I would like to know if I spelled it correctly? ~Elaine

In my 1847 Bradshaw, Geo Collett is shown as a famer in Monkton at Walter's Hill . If you look at the description of the ED for the 1861 census, it looks more like Walter's Hall, but in the 1851 census it's definitely Hall. In a much later Kelly's (1928) it's shown as Walter's Hall. Best wishes Elizabeth Er3pr@aol.com wrote: >Hello list, >I was wondering if any one knew about a place called Walthen (sp?)
