Hi Madie, Am a mere novice with the Sandwell's who stumbled across the contact with THE BOOK!!!!!! Best try and speak to Richard Sandwell and Barbara Stow on the list. Sorry I can't help. Regards, Louise. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bingmbing@aol.com To: dave.lou@speed-mail.co.uk ; Isle-of-Thanet-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2006 1:31 PM Subject: Paris SANDWELL Louise, I am working through the various Sandwell charts you kindly sent, and have a query on Fig.8B. Near the top we find Paris SANDWELL born 1695, with a wife Ann MOCKETT married in 1717 but died 1716. They have children listed from 1719 to 1734, so I assume the death is incorrect. Have any of the SANDWELL listers got another date? Madie

All the known registers in England and Ireland have been published by the Huguenot Society in their Quarto series. The books are available in many older libraries and have also been republished on CD Rom. The basic information in baptisms and marriages has been indexed onto the Mormon site LDS. Good Afternoon, Does anyone on the list have Mercy Wales (married name Hayward) in their family line? She was my GGG Grandmother and was born in Brook Minster abt 1796. She lived in Birchington. If so, I would love to hear from you. I have seen a lot of messages pertaining to the Wales name, I just wonder if there might be a connection somewhere with someone. ~Elaine
Hi Joe, I have a connection to the Strevens family in Thanet. My GGG Uncle John Thomas Haywards' daughter Ellen Hayward (b. Dec 2, 1866), married Harry Strevens (b. 1862 in Broadstairs) Birchington June Q.1889. Ellen was a domestic servant for William Woodruff, the watchmaker in Margate. In 1891 Ellen and Harry were living in Broadstairs, he was an upholsterer and cabinet maker. They had a daughter Ethel, abt a year old. By 1901 they also had Alfred, Bernard, Ethelbert, Mabel, Winifred, a baby boy not yet named. Maybe there is a connection? ~Elaine
Hi Elaine, Yes, I believe we connect through your Harry's younger brother Ernest (b.3rd quarter 1867 in Broadstairs). My grand aunt Harriet Betsey PIGGOTT married Ernest 3 April 1893 and they had 3 children. I don't guess you have listed your 1881 census information on Lost Cousins or we would have found each other earlier through that connection. Have you seen anything on Ernest and family? thanks, Joe At 11:53 AM 04/23/2006, you wrote: >I have a connection to the Strevens family in Thanet. Thanks to everyone for sorting me out. Think I've got it all straight now. Madie
Hi List, Does anyone else on the list have connections to the many STREVENS families in the area? Louise, Third query. At the top of Fig.8B is Nicholas SANDWELL who married Mary PARIS. Against his name is a reference 12.1, and it refers us to "see fig.9B" Now ref 12.1 on 9B is a Mary SANDWELL, dau of Edward. Do you think Nicholas is a son of Edward? Madie
Another query. Jeremiah Sandwell married Sarah Fagg. In the Sandwell chart fig.8B she is given as born 1736, died 1834, having children from 1775 to 1794. If really born in 1736, she would have been 58 when the last child was born. Also Jeremiah was born 1753. Do you think her true birth was 1756? Can any of the Sandwell listers confirm please. Madie

Hello good listers Wonder if we have is anyone out there with the name BRISSENDEN in their records, enquiry from my cousin John DANIELS in Sydney wondering if we can find some connection to us. Whilst mailing this, may as well mention other names important to us largely 'Men' of Kent, but folk more widely spread still of interest. These are: RIGDEN, GRANGER, CAREY, NICHOLS(S), APPLETON, WHORLOW, TRITTON, with earlier connections to: ADLEY, SANDY, GILES, WALLER, TURMINE*, DURIES* (DURIEZ), MARSH, MORRIS, CAUVIN* AND DUCHATTEL*. Starred items were or likely to be Huguenots. Cheers to all Michael in Clacton, Essex, UK.
What an interesting article, Suzannah. Thanks for all the time you put into running this excellent list. Best Wishes, Norma & Mick In a message dated 22/04/2006 23:58:48 GMT Daylight Time, suzannah.foad@btopenworld.com writes: An eminent surgeon interred at Margate cemetery is William Knight Treves, older brother of Frederick Treves, medical investigator and later mentor of Joseph Merrick (The Elephant Man) and pioneer of abdominal surgery, performing a successful appendectomy on King Edward VII in 1902, a year after he had been knighted by him. He as appointed Surgeon in Ordinary to the Duke of York in 1897 and to the Queen, Victoria in 1900.and later, in 1901 he was appointed Sergeant Surgeon to King Edward VII. A Man of great achievement, if somewhat difficult of character, Sir Frederick Treves owed much to his older brother William, for his inspiration. The family came from Dorchester, where William Knight Treves was born on the 2nd of August 1843. He studied medicine at St Thomas's Hospital and went on to become a General practitioner, but his interest in the treatment of Scrofula (Tuberculosis) led him to move to Margate, where he became resident surgeon at the Sea Bathing Infirmary. This was the national hospital for the treatment of Scrofula. Frederick entered into business with William Hunter and William Thornton. In August, 1876 Frederick Treves arrived to start a five month stay at the Sea Bathing to study Scrofula and became an expert on the subject. For William Treves, the life here was good, with plenty of wealthy private patients to provide the high income, and it was the treatment of the disease which would win him acclaim. He perfected his technique to mitigate the awful disfiguring scarring which inevitably accompanied the disease which, although, seldom fatal in its external abscess form, was unpleasant in that its scarring led to recovered patients being ostracised by society. In 1901, William was appointed to the post of Consultant Surgeon to the Hospital. William was a very busy and well respected man in Margate. On the establishment of the Cottage Hospital in Victoria Road in 1876, he was appointed its first Medical Superintendent, having a ward extension of 1897 named in his honour. Twelve patients were treated in the first year with only one dying. Having given up his private practice to devote his time to researching Scrofula, he nonetheless maintained his interest in the hospitals, and became District Medical Officer and Medical Officer of Health. he remained in Margate for the rest of his life, his son Frederick Boileau Treves, being a Margate Doctor also. William Knight Treves passed away on 14th October 1908, his funeral service being attended by many medical men and dignitaries. -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
