    1. Bushell - Ramsgate - Margate
    2. Chris Baker
    3. Suzannah, Re the info we have exchanged on the Bushells over the past week and your interest in Margaret BUSHELL. It might help with Margaret if you check out her grandchildren's names. There was a family habit of using maiden surnames as middle names for the children (Phillips, Dickinson etc). I can send you the details if you do not have them already. Chris

    3. Grotto House is in Margate High Street behind Barclays Bank and its back fronts onto Albert Terrace. A famous lady/actress lived there in the 19th century (Can't think off top of my head) and Stephen Wales placed a few shell panels into her basement so she could worship, something like that. I of course, have a copy of the article which is floating round and it was compiled by Mick Twyman of the Margate Historical Society. It all came to light when Dr Alan Kay was disputing and seen in some eyes as mocking the Shell Grotto on TV!!, (hardly going to bring the visitors flocking in,)saying Stephen Wales had placed the panels in the Shell Grotto. But, the Shell Grotto was rediscovered in 1837 by a son of James Newlove at the rear of his School in the Dane, and our Stephen Wales was not born till 1841! So, it transpired that Stephen Wales placed the panels in the Grotto House in Margate High Street and had nothing what so ever to do with the Shell Grotto. Dr Alan Kay was proved wrong again and the wonderful Mick Twyman has hit upon something wonderful with the Knights Templar's, who although a secret society, have helped him with his research. Mick will finally get the recognition for his near enough life's work on the subject. Will find the article x ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Wales" <cleavefarm@btinternet.com> To: <Isle-of-Thanet-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 02, 2006 2:06 PM Subject: [IoT] Grotto House > I have just found a pencilled note on the back of a piece of paper with no source noted against it (I'm sure other members of the List NEVER do things like this) it says: > > Stephen Wales - Grotto House story. > > At the time I wrote the note, we had no Stephen in our branch, but now of course I have found one, and would dearly love to know the meaning of my cryptic note!! I have just found a pencilled note on the back of a piece of paper with no source noted against it (I'm sure other members of the List NEVER do things like this) it says: Stephen Wales - Grotto House story. At the time I wrote the note, we had no Stephen in our branch, but now of course I have found one, and would dearly love to know the meaning of my cryptic note!! Any suggestions? Linda

    3. My understanding is that the master of the vessel was to turn in the census forms when next he returned to port. So being at sea on census night was not an excuse to be "missing". 1. Tottman Family in Thanet
    2. steve tottman
    3. My branch of the Tottman's has been traced to Canterbury in the early nineteenth century. In the 1850's John Tottman appears to have moved his family to Ramsgate, where it flourished and appears to have disappeared in the 1950's when Gerald Tottman died. In between times there have been many that I have been able to trace, but there are a number that I cannot. I would appreciate any information about any Tottman in thanet, so that I can update my records. Thanks Steve Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

    1. James Smith
    2. janet oflaherty
    3. Susannah and Pat, thank you so much for the cemetery records you are transcribing. James and Sarah SMITH were my 3xggparents. I have been looking for his death for a while. His Will dated 1838 proved 1841, mentioned his children, but Louisa was still under her maiden name, she married William George COUSINS, a coach builder from Abingdon Brk in 1838, Ebenezer Chapel, Ramsgate. It mentioned his other children William Edward SMITH, Charlotte Sarah SMITH, Anne Marie SMITH ( married James Whyte) James Plaskett SMITH and Sydney George SMITH. I haven't been able to find a birth for James or Sydney, or any other details about them. Sydney was 6 in the 1841 census with his mother Charlotte living in Waterloo Cottages. This is obviously the family home, as Louisa was married from there. The eldest son William Edward SMITH was a builder and architect and his son James was also a builder in Ramsgate. If anyone has any information on these families it would be great to hear from them. Thanks again for all your work.
