    3. Hi June. I'm not sure whether this is the same couple, as the children I found were al baptised at Margate, but families did move around in those times. 3. Daily Universal Register (London, Middlesex and England) 30th November 1786 About two years since he died at Birchington in the Isle of Thanet, Mr William GRIGGS, many years Master of a Windmill at that place, on his death bed he informed his son, who is now master of the said Mill, that he had buried a quantity of money in the house he lived in, at Birchington. The son, after his fathers decease, searched after the money, but could not discover where it was. The house was let to another person, who has lived in it ever since, till within a quarter of a year, when he quitted it. The house being now empty, the son of the said Miller, determined on a second search, when under the pavement in the kitchen he found a clock containing a bag with 735 guineas. The son has given half this sum to his sisters children, who are left without a father or mother, their parents being dead some time. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Edinburgh Advertiser September 3rd 1822 Awful Catastrophe - About 4 o'clock in the afternoon of Monday se'nnight the village of St Nicholas, in the Isle of Thanet, was visited by one of the most tremendous storms of thunder and lightening ever known in the memory of the oldest inhabitant, in the course of which two men, named George BEDDINGFIELD and Richard JOHNCOCK, who were at work in a field, near the village, were instantaneously struck dead by the electric fluid, which was observed to descend to the earth at within two feet of BEDDINGFIELD, whose clothes were torn in pieces, and his body rendered a shocking spectacle, his head being dreadfully burnt, also one of his legs. The body of Richard JOHNCOCK was also much discoloured and blackened. They were both married men, and beside a wife, JOHNCOCK has left six children, and what adds to the calamity, his wife had been delivered of a the youngest only a few hours. Two other persons were knocked down and injured the same moment. The bodies were conveyed to the church to await a Coroner's Inquest and the sensation occasioned in the village by this dreadful occurrence is indescribable. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. A Heritage Centre will be opened in Westgate to teach people about its history as "a London estate by the sea'. Dawn Crouch is setting up displays at the back of St Saviours Church detailing Westgate and Westbrook's past. It is hoped workshops will be run to help residents trace their ancestors. Historian Dr Crouch, who wrote a thesis on the area said Westgate was created 1050 years ago as a giant holiday home for the landed gentry. Exhibitions will be housed in the space by moving some pews in the church. There will be a potted history of Westgate, old photographs and text. Dr Crouch said "There is a display on Westgate and Westbrook in the 1920's to celebrate the Queen's Birthday. It was an important decade for both places. "In mid June we hope to have a display connected with the Battle of the Somme. "A Number of Westgate men died in the Somme, some on the first day. This year is experimental year but it is hoped the centre will be well established by 2006. The exhibition aimed at residents and tourists, and will be open three days a week. A series of open sessions are planned to enable people to begin researching their family histories" Dr Crouch also said it is important to recognise Westgate's past and said 'Its different from anywhere else and comparatively young at 150 years. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Also, I've discovered that the Wales family moved quite a bit between different places, i.e. from Margate to St. Peters and back. I found a marriage between James Wales and Sarah Shrubshall/Shrubsole. Could it be that they're the parents of the James who married Elizabeth Fowler? Anyway, just take your time sorting things out, I'll be gone this weekend (leave tomorrow) to take the kids to their father. Will be online tonite and then monday again, so ... have a good weekend! If anybody has access to marriage records of Saint Peters, I would dearly love to find out whether the James Wales who married Hannah Foster 5 Dec 1797 was a widower at the time of his wedding I'm having a sneaking suspicion that he is the same James Wales who married Elizabeth Fowler 23 Sep 1794 at Saint Peters! That only leaves the problem whether not people who shared the same grandfather were allowed to marry. Would that be 'related in the 4th degree' ? I have no idea! 3. Hi again Linda ;o) Yes, this is 'my' James. He married Esther Jarman 12 Oct 1830 at St. John's, Margate. I have a total of 12 children from this marriage. William's sister Hannah - 28 July/16 Oct 1848 - was my great-great-grandmother. James's parents most likely are James W(h)ales and Elisabeth Fowler (dau. of Robert Fowler and Mary Kebble?), although I do have some doubts about that. Usually the custom was to name the first son after the wife's father, but I haven't found a son named Robert yet. Different sources say James was either born in Northdown or St. Peters. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any online baptisms records for that parish. I did find a James son of james Whales and Elisabeth on Family Search, baptised 13 march 1796 that would be a good match. But again, somebody would have to look into the actual records to be certain. If you want more information on James and Esther and their children just let me know. Somebody very kind and very fanatic about research (we both know who we are talking about, name starts with an S and ends with uzannah ;o) sent me loads of info! 2. Saskia Steinhorst
    3. Hi Linda. Am finding all this on Barry White's pages, which contain loads of transcribed records from Thanet. That, and some information from Family Search result in a pretty clear picture. I doubt whether the double marriage of Jane Bishop is a transcription error, but yes, somebody would have to look in the actual records to be completely sure. And I live in The Netherlands .. :( There are very few Wayhalls or Wayhills to be found in the area, but Minster on Thanet and Monkton do have records for Whales, Wales and Whale. I'm still pretty sure the name got corrupted, although there are records for Wayhill baptisms and marriages in later times in Margate. Maybe one branch of the family decided to stick with the corrupted name. Also, I'm fairly certain that the two Whales families coming together in my ancestors - the marriage between Stephen Wales and Hannah Whales in 1870 - are originally one and the same family. Possibly both branches originated from the two marriages with offspring from John Whale(s) or from his brothers William and Nathaniel. It still needs some looking into. If and when I find more I'll put it on the website. Warm regards, Kya Linda Wales <cleavefarm@btinternet.com> wrote: Hi Kya, this all looks very interesting, where are you finding all this information? Are you looking at records, or is this from website? I too found Stephen and James both 'marrying' Jane Bishop, but I have not confirmed this with actual recods yet, so thought it COULD be just an error in transcription. Would be interested to know if you have checked original. The Wayhill connection sounds interesting though. I have always thought that our ancestor originally came to Thanet 'from Wales' and would have been referred to as Tom Dick or Harry 'of Wales' which then became corrupted as just Tom Wales.... Also.. about births just after marriage... Not only the wealthy did this. The poor old ag lab would often became betrothed to his beloved, and they would live together as man and wife, quite happily, but not necessarily tying the know until their next day off... which in those days came few and far between, hence so many marriages at Christmas!!! 3. Hi Paul. I looked through some records online (the Barry White Thanet pages) and did find both marriages. However, there is no recorded death for Stephen Wales, and the marriage record for James doesn't say Jane is a widow. I think it more likely the marriage with Stephen didn't ' work out ' and/or she just fell in love with her brother-in-law. ;o) There are no baptism records prior to 1801 on that site, so I wasn't able to see whether Stephen and James were brothers. It's highly likely though. Hope this is of some help to you.
