Hi listers Have just replied direct to Margaret Lewington - there's an 1880 photo of Town Hall and Market in 'The Archive Photographs Series - Ramsgate and St Lawrence - compiled by Don Dimon and Barrie Wootton. ISBN 0-7524-0035-5 priced at £9.99. Mo in Yorkshire
Hello list, Just a reminder that if anyone wants any photos taken of Ramsgate, give me a yell, OK ? I have to do something legal when I'm walking the streets, you know, or I'll end up with a reputation that will have my ancestors spinning in their graves, even if some of those graves are now under a car park !!! Dear Norma, This is very spooky. Only today my partner and I were at Updown House and Farm. I didn't realise it had been there so long. I was contacted recently by someone who turns out to be distantly related. He has posed as question that I'm still scratching my head over and I would welcome any suggestions. William BUSHELL b 1864 married Sarah DICKENSON b.abt 1765. They had numerous children, the last in March 1802. I have William on the 1851 census living with his daughter and her family with his occupation shown as Milkman. I can't find him on an 1841 census but there is a William Bushell b abt 1765 also shown as a Milkman but married to the wonderfully named Pleasant Bushell. If Susannah is reading this: as you know, William BUSHELL is the brother of Margaret BUSHELL (later FOAD) I believe that Sarah died in 1840 so if its "my" William then he would have had to married Pleasant within a year of her death; a bit unusual for a 75 year old but, equally, how many elderly Milkmen called William Bushell could there be in one small town? The answer, of course, is in Pleasant & William's marriage record and that's where I have drawn a total blank. There were two women of the right age called Pleasant and one married a Henry Bushell (who I do not have listed as a relative of William) in 1808 but the is no trace of the other one getting married. Did William marry Henry's widow? Help! Chris

Hi Margaret I have one of what was once Ramsgate Town Hall c1930 which stood on this spot. The market stalls stood beneath the Council Chambers. This building was demolished in 1955 and replaced by new shops. If it is Petronella, then she was in Chatham in the 1871 census - her husband was a boilermaker and she died in Chatham in December 1878, aged 44. Thanks for all the help.
