Hi Susannah Many thanks for your reply, that is the family I found in the IGI files and was hoping some one was still in or around the area that had some knowledge of the family. We have this huge brick wall up as to where our Robert was born, have even had DNA tests done, but still not leading us any where. Will try the 1841 census. Hi Thanet listers With my ancestors from Thanet, Stourmouth and later St Peters, I research Austens of Thanet and Kent and have a number of families which probably connect. One family which I have presumed to be connected is an Abraham John Austen who married Sarah Fox in the late 1850s. I have descendants and am looking to connect with someone who may be related. Names include LUCK, FOX, Margaret LAWRENCE, Elizabeth SCOTT, Edith MIDDLE. Brian Austen Austen Families, histories and research. www.trump.net.au/~austen/austenhist.htm
I know this isn't strictly Thanet related so apologies to Suzannah, however I want to sign up to Ancestry for one month only. As I understand I have to cancel my membership if I don't want them to take further payments from my credit card and I wondered if anyone out there had done the same and if they had any problems cancelling. Thanks Yvonne (Broadstairs)
Something that has appeared recently on the KFHS list but may have escaped some listers here, is an invaluable tip for using the marriages section of the KCC BDM online service at http://extranet3.kent.gov.uk/sp/rois/home.html Please excuse me if you have already seen this, but it is too good to not share widely. From Graeme Kitney: The *really* interesting thing about the search is not so much the information that is presented, but rather what is 'hidden' from view. Instead of clicking on the name of the person of interest, hover the cursor over the link and look at the bottom of the browser. There you will see the link into the KCC's database. This link gives the date of the marriage! My own addition: When you search in the normal way, the results appear as a list. If you then "hover" your mouse pointer over a name on the list and look at the bottom left of your screen, just above the START button (assuming you are using Windows XP then you will see a long list of what might seem like computer gobbledegook. The last item on that line is the detailed date relating to the item you are hovering on. It's obviously a piece of internal data from the KRS database and seeing it actually displayed is unusual but very useful! Just for clarification - it's a quirk of their system and using it is certainly not prohibited or wrong in any way. What you actually see is (part of) the URL for the page that you would go to if you click on the link. They obviously use the date and register reference to name their web database links. If the line disappears off your screen another method is to right-click on the target name and left-click "properties". Part of the code is a reference to the church, and a downloadable list of these codes is being compiled at http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/famhistory/kentregcodes.htm (credit to Brenda Paternoster for her work. Suzannah, As you know I have an interest in all things BUSHELL around that date - how would you suggest I try and find a Christian name for Capt. Bushell? I am particularly thinking of my 3rd g-grandfather John BUSHELL b. 1796, known in the family as "Captain John", & son of William BUSHELL b.1764 that you already know about. I haven't really started looking at John yet and just have dates & census information; I'm just collecting my thoughts and deciding where to focus my research.
