    3. Neither of these houses are in my 1926 Kelly's directory, which my mean that they'd just been built too. I don't have a later copy, but if someone has a later directory if they could look in the "Villas, Terraces, etc" section that should give you the answer. Having lived off the Margate Rd for a long time, I did look in the Broadstairs and Margate Villa's also as the boundaries were all very close. 3. Hi all, In the 1920s and 30s my father, Leslie Albert Leveridge, worked in the office of John T May, the builder, in Broadstairs. Among Dad's papers are the plans of a "Proposed bungalow, Margate Road, Ramsgate, for Mr S. W. Bushell". The plans were drawn in 1926 and are coloured. The fact that Dad still had the plans may mean that the bungalow was never built, but it would be great to know. According to the site plan, the bungalow was intended for a narrow (30 ft wide) block between houses named "Budleigh" and "Moworthy" (this was way before street numbers). Would it be possible to find out from local street directories of the time? Margaret Lewington Perth Western Australia

    1. Heavy Death Toll - 1929
    2. suzannah.foad
    3. 13th April 1929 Isle of Thanet Gazette The number of deaths which have occurred in Margate and District during the first three months of the present year, show an alarming increase on the corresponding figures of the fist three months of 1928. This year 170 deaths have been registered, as against 110 for the same period last year. This increase can be said to be almost entirely due to the epidemic of influenza and Pneumonia which has been prevalent throughout the Country. The last influenza epidemic which was in October, November and December of 1918 resulted in 171 deaths, almost the same number as this year. A singular disparity between the two attacks is that, whereas in 1918 people of all ages were among those seriously attacked, this yea that fatal seizures were chiefly among the older people. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. Emptage, Surety for Ill Treatment of wife 1880 Margate
    2. suzannah.foad
    3. 3rd January 1880 Keble's Gazette Henry James EMPTAGE a boatman residing in Clifton Street was brought to be bound over to desist from ill-treating his wife. It appears that the prisoner was very much addicted to drink and frequently came home intoxicated and fell to ill using his wife and children. Mrs EMPTAGE, wife of the prisoner, said "I am wife to the defendant and last night, about half past nine, I was home at 24 Clifton Street and my husband came home drunk, but went to bed quietly. He asked me for beer and I sent my son for some and gave it to him. After that I went to bed and he kicked me out, he used filthy language to me and threatened to cut my throat. I did not go back to bed. He struck me while I was getting my clothes in, I got my neighbour next door to take my three children, and we all went into her house for the night. I am afraid of him, his conduct has been of this nature for 5 or 6 years. I am in bodily fear when he is drink, but when he is sober he is a good a husband as anyone. He has come home from sea, and since last Christmas he has never been sober. When he earns money, when sober, he gives it to me. He has struck me many times before. Last summer I lost all my lodgers through him. I went up to London and be came to my friends and begged me to come back down. I then went and he was quiet for about a month, but he afterwards broke out all the same. My BOYS, for Mrs EMPTAGE, stated that she had often come to him about the matter but, like many other wives, demurred from bringing her husband before the Magistrates. On being asked, the prisoner said he knew nothing about it, that he was drunk at the time and could not recollect anything. The Bench, finding the case to be a very aggravated one, bound prisoner over in himself twenty pounds and to find two sureties in ten pounds each, or to be imprisoned for three months. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. Twyman - Mackie Assault Margate 1924
    2. suzannah.foad
    3. 23rd July 1924 Isle of Thanet Gazette William MACKIE was summoned for having, on the 18th July, at the King's Stairs, assaulted Arthur TWYMAN. He pleaded not guilty. TWYMAN said that on the 18th inst. he was working in connection with one of the motor boats, when MACKIE, without any provocation, struck him on the nose, making it bleed. He did not wish to press a case against MACKIE, he simply wanted protection. MACKIE denied striking TWYMAN and said he was negotiating with a party or the hire of a motor-boat, when TWYMAN, who was working in connection with another boat, interfered, and he told him to mind his own business. TWYMAN, who was under the influence of drink, ran away. He did not know what for, but he did not strike him. The Justice's Clerk said that TWYMAN went to his office immediately after the assault and he was then sober. Albert EMPTAGE gave evidence as to TWYMAN interfering with a party who wanted to hire a motor-boat privately, but he did not see anything done to TWYMAN. P.C Bartlett said that TWYMAN went to the Police Station Immediately after the assault, his nose bleeding and he was sober/ The magistrates having considered the case, the Chairman said they considered an Assault had been committed but as complainant did not wish to press the case, defendant would simply be bound over, in the sum of ten pounds, to keep the peace for six months, and he was ordered to pay 10s and 6d costs. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 2. I wonder if the following would fit: Sarah Ann YOUNG married Henry Martin SANDWELL at St Peters in Thanet on 23 June 1832. They had two known children. First Sarah Ann SANDWELL born 6 July 1834 and died September 1839. Secondly Jane Elizabeth SANDWELL born 8 January 1837 and died June 1850. So neither survived to adulthood. Henry Martin SANDWELL died in December 1838, and Sarah Ann SANDWELL (nee Young) remarried to William ROGERS, date unknown. I have no information on any children of this marriage, but perhaps you have? Regards, Madie

Suzannah Just in case you would like to go over old messages, You can check the Isle of Thanet archives by looking for the subscribe page on Rootsweb. A FAMILY HISTORIANS LAMENT - AUTHOR UNKNOWN I've been doing family history for nearly 30 years, Diligently tracing my illustrious forebears, From Pigeon Lake to Peterborough, Penrith to Penzance, My merry band of ancestors has led me quite a dance. There's cooks from Kent and guards from Gwent And chimney sweeps from Chester. There's even one daft fisherman lived all his life in Leicester, There's no - one rich or famous, no not even well-to-do, Though a second cousin twice removed once played in goal for Crewe. I've haunted record offices from Gillingham to Jarrow; the little grey cells of my mind would humble Hercule Poirot. I've deciphered bad handwriting that would shame a three year old, and brought the black sheep of the family back into the fold. My bride of just three minutes, I left standing in the church, as I nipped into the graveyard for a spot of quick research. Eventually I found an uncle, sixty years deceased. That was far more satisfying than a silly wedding feast, After three weeks of wedded bliss, my wife became despondent She named the public records office as the co-respondent. I didn't even notice when she packed her bags and went I was looking for a great granddad's will who'd died in Stoke on Trent But now my 30 year obsession is lying in the bin Last Tuesday week, I heard some news that made me pack it in. It was then my darling mother, who is not long for this earth, casually informed me they'd adopted me at birth! ______________________________ ------------------------------ ----- Original Message ----- From: "MAUREEN SHARPE" <mo.sharpe@btinternet.com> To: <Isle-of-Thanet-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 02, 2006 5:00 PM Subject: [IoT] A Family Historians Lament and the Austens > Hi Suzannah > > Last September you put out the above poem - I've lost it and would be grateful for a repeat. 3. Blank Hi, Just seen this message on another list and thought I would pass it on - wouldn't it be handy if when we are doing searches we can contact other interested parties - as the message says - it could knock down lots of brick walls!!!! Louise. I've been out of the loop for a bit so this might be old news, but if it isn't, and it can help others; FreeBMD has postem's that you can fill in. very small and basic, but very useful. if you find a relative or ancestor you know in the freebmd list, and they have "info" in red next to their listing, click on it to access the post-em window. we can save each other tons of fees for wrong certificates if we do this, and maybe net us some missing cousins, as well. I'm going back and adding postems to all of my people so it will help others. I have at least 100 individuals, and I don't think I'm going to do it for all three records if they're available-usually one would search for all three records of an individual, so I hope that will suffice. and the early ones only have a death record, if we're lucky, so that's what I'm heading for. so, here's another way to find our relatives. pass this on to the other British lists you're on, it could break down brick walls all over the place. I think I found my 4x grt grandmother today in freebmd. I don't think she was there last time I checked. I hope it's her, she'd break down her own brick wall if it is. haven't sent for her, yet, but I shall. ______________________________
