    3. Any Atwell researchers out there that could help? Now I am one of the Attwell/Atwells of the Thanet area, and between my cousin who lives in UK and myself we have managed to put a reasonable tree together on the Atwell line going back to my 5th great grandfather. My 5th G. Grandfather was Joseph Atwell who married Elizabeth, probably Knowler. Their first child and subsequent children all born Ramsgate, Richard, the first born around 1780, so presume they married around 1778-80, and we presume around Ramsgate area. Now I have searched all I can that is available on the net, and yet to find his birth or marriage. I assume both he and Elizabeth Knowler would have been born around 1760 or just before that. I have come across a few Atwell births in Thanet around the time Joseph would have been born, both females, so obviously there was a family of Atwells near Ramsgate, although Atwells were scattered around Kent. Similarly, I find numerous Elizabeth Knowlers and Knowler's generally also scattered across Kent. Other names associated with Atwells through marriage, are Maxteds, Dilnots, Appletons. Any advice you can give me re where else I may look would be greatly appreciated, bearing in mind I'm in Ozz. Regards Norma Rundle. rundle2@bigpond.com.au PS The Atwell line or part of it also aquired an extra 'T' somewhere along the line, same family. If you come across any other Atwell researchers, would be happy to pass on any info. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Hi Andy, Sheerness is on the Isle of Sheppey, not the Isle of Thanet, so if you ask on the Kent list, you'll have a better chance of getting the help you require. Sheppey is about an hour's drive from Thanet these days, so in the *olden days*, it would have been a pretty long walk !! :o) Good luck !! Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent Hi listers, In the 1851 census I have an enigma that has puzzled me for some while. In the census for Sussex, a John GRANT, born Sheerness circa 1807 appears with his wife Frances. The name, date and wife's name all are roughly consistent with what I know of a John GRANT who was born in Brighton and who appears there in the 1841 census. The whole family disappears by 1851. Would SKS please be able to advise me if there is indeed a matching birth / baptism for John GRANT in the Sheerness area around 1807. Any other useful information about GRANT's in the area would be very gratefully appreciated. Regards, Andy

    3. Hi listers, In the 1851 census I have an enigma that has puzzled me for some while.

    3. Following on from a fabulous photo of a family gravestone sent by Suzannah (thanks again !), I'm following up this branch of my OFFENs and I only have the details from the 1881 census. I'm looking for Mary PITCHER (nee OFFEN) (born circa 1815 in Ramsgate), husband Thomas PITCHER (born circa 1816 in Ramsgate, music teacher) and any children they may have with them. Thomas was presumably pretty well known in Ramsgate as he was a Professor of music, singing teacher at Ramsgate Ladies Seminary, Organist at Holy Trinity, Ramsgate and also owned a music shop at High Street, Ramsgate (also listed at 1 Hardres Street in an 1841 directory). An online contact gave me this intriguing snippet too - "Besides music, his other interest was the Village Catch and Glee Club" - I have visions of him running around chasing people with a tickling stick but does anyone know what it really was ?!! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. 3. Hi Suzannah, I have forwarded your 'A family historians lament' to several relatives and friends, it then to receive wholehearted appreciation. Expect it has gone on to attract even wider acclaim. Thanks indeed for posting it. What a pity you are not doing Whitstable Cemetery monument inscriptions. Have relatives in that town, but none really into genealogy and willing to wander round graveyards, although they are quite interested in what I have discovered about the DANIELS/RIGDENS. Then there is the RIGDENS and CAREYS of Canterbury, but more importantly for the benefit of my cousin Dr. Daniels in Sydney, reference his Henry DANIELS. John writes: Some not so good news in that the GRO was not able to locate Henry's death cert between 1940-1942. Looks like a trip back to the Canterbury cemetery to see if I can find the grave that I thought to be his. Never mind, persistence always pays off. Anyway, to help I thought I would contact your goodself and further, make mention on the IoT and Kent lists. Maybe there's a kind someone who is familiar with either or both burial grounds? Kind regards Michael in Clacton, Essex, quite a step from Whitstable, although we can, from our balcony and under good atmospheric conditions, just make out the Kent coastline 30 miles distant across the Thames Estuary.

    3. Hi, I'm trying to trace a Charles Arthur Foster born in Ramsgate in 1868. He is with the family in Vale Road in 1881 but I can't find him after that. Rumour has it that he may have emigrated to the US and I have searched the Ellis Island site which produced 1 possibility, but it is a bit tenuous. I wondered whether any lister living in the US would have any ideas or suggestions of other places to search. I know this isn't much to go on but I also know that people on this list are very resourceful so thought I'd give it a try. Best wishes, Terry
