Dear Suzannah George Clayson Culmer was the sone of George and Ellen Matilda (nee Brenchley) Culmer. What I didn't know was that they were connected to Bill Nye and his wife. I knew them for years when we lived in Margate! I would love a copy of the photo please. Hi everyone, I'm new to this list and I have just discovered a new family name...Lansell. Charlotte LANSELL is the wife of William BARKER. Barker is my main name of interest. I can not find their marriage record. Too many William Barkers to trawl through and perhaps there is a different spelling of Lansell, Lancell, Landsell. In fact there are very few Lansell names on FreeBMD for any event. Charlotte and Williams children are... Rachel b 1859, (her birth cert. tells me Mother's maiden name is Lancell, of St Peters, Kent) Henry b 1861, Elizabeth b 1865, James b 1868, Gibbon b 1870, All were born St. George Hanover Square. All lived in Lyall Mews near Belgrave Square, London and William was a Coachman. According to the 1871 & 1881 census images Charlotte is from St. Peters, Kent. William is from Norwich, Norfolk b 1828. I have found him on the 1851 census working as a groom (ref HO 107/1630) in the household of Harriet L Cotton. I have the Barkers back to 1747 in NFK. and forward to this day. As yet I have not been able to find William or Charlotte on 1861 census. Charlotte was buried 12th Sept. 1890 age 61yrs.in London. According to IGI... Henry LANSELL married Rachel PEELE 24th Apr. 1825, St Peters, Thanet. Issue... Gibon Lansell, ch 11th March 1827, St Peters, Thanet. Charlotte Lansell ch 30th Nov. 1828, St Peters, Thanet. These seem to be my Lansells, same names and same spellings. Henry Lansell (above) ch 27th Sept. 1797 Saint Paul, Canterbury, son of John Lansell and Susannah ?. William-Henry ch 9th Aug 1789 St Paul, Canterbury, son of John Lansell and Susannah. George ch 20th Dec. 1792 St Paul, Canterbury son of John Lansell and Susannah. There seems to be quite a few Lansells in Kent and I can't sort out who belongs where. Who are Johns parents? Can anyone help me please? I'd like to be able to go back further with Charlotte. Is Lansell French and were they Huguenot? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to all replies. Many thanks, Ann in Brisbane.

Daily Universal Register 27th April 1786 Canterbury April 18th, Sunday morning last, John ANCELL a poor labouring man, in the Parish of St Peter in Thanet was found in a field adjoining to Draper's near Margate, with his skull fractured in a flocking manner, and many parts of his body terribly bruised. The following are the particulars relative to this horrid affair. The deceased went to Margate on Saturday evening a quarter before eleven o'clock, at which time he parted with an acquaintance near the Churchyard, to go home to Sackett's Hill, and he was then in much liquor. Soon afterwards, Charles TWYMAN of Bromstone, near St Peter's, was seen to go the same road on horseback, with a boy who lived with him, behind him. A suspicion therefore fell on to the said Charles TWYMAN, which was strongly confirmed by its being known that there had been a dispute between him and the deceased for some time since and that TWYMAN threatened to be revenged on the deceased. The boy who rode behind TWYMAN, was examined Sunday afternoon, but for a long time he denied any knowledge of the murder and though only twelve years of age, kept to one account, that it was with great difficulty he was made to confess the truth. At last he owned that Charles TWYMAN did kill ANCELL and gave this relation; TWYMAN was on horseback and overtook the deceased about 11 o'clock on Saturday night, a short distance from Margate church yard, on the road to Draper's; that he first attempted to take a bag from ANCELL, and told him that he was an excise officer; but ANCELL, knowing TWYMAN, called him by his name and refused to give up his property; on this a scuffle ensued and TWYMAN knocked ANCELL down by a blow on the head with a great club stick. ANCELL recovering a little, got away as far as Draper's, near half a mile from the place where he was first struck, but TWYMAN then came up with ANCELL and knocked him down a second time. After this the poor wretch got on him knees and begged for mercy. TWYMAN dismounted and shook hands and promised he would not strike him any more; but almost as the same instant, the blood thirsty villain gave the unhappy man several violent blows on his head which fractured his skull; then made him (The boy) strike the deceased several times while he was bleeding on the ground and afterwards TWYMAN walked his horse two or three times over the dead body. Thus finished the horrid scene. It is much to be lamented that this cruel murder is not yet taken but a search is making after him, and every step pursued to hinder him getting away by water, being well known on the Isle of Thanet, and on the sea coast, it is thought he cannot escape the punishment due to his crime. The deceased has left a wife and 8 children and the murderer has left a wife and 5 children. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. A signal was received from K5 that she was diving, but she failed to reappear at the end of the exercise. An hour before dusk a battery cover from a K boat was recovered and the next morning a sailor’s ditty box was found - the last trace of K5. It is believed an accident caused K5 to exceed her maximum diving depth. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. From the web it looks as though the area of Belgravia, where Lyall Mews was, including Buckingham Palace were stolen before they could be microfilmed. Therefore, I don't think you will ever find Charlotte and William in 1861 unless the missing pages reappear. I too have some missing pages in the Woodstock area including Hampton Gay, a lost village. Sorry for the bad news. Just a short distance from King George VI park in Ramsgate is a row of houses. In the middle of these there is a gap which looks like there used to be another house on the site. I was wondering if anyone knew for certain if it was a house and what happened. Was a bomb dropped during the war? The site hasn't been built on which is surprising and is getting overgrown with weeds.
Blank Hi all, Am trying to help a friend in need, who lived in a children's home and is unsure of his parentage, name etc. I have put messages in before (and thank you to those who responded), but this one has more details if anyone can help, please? The gentleman was always called David John Buckle - however on leaving the home he was told his surname was Clarke with an E!!!!! He believes that he may have been born on August 11 1924 (the day he celebrates his birthday) to Hilda Marion Clarke of Westbourne Sq, Paddington, London. He has a birth certificate registering the birth in Honiton, Devon. There is no reference to a father. His earliest memories are of living in an unregulated childrens home in Tooting Common, London - he has no details. The second memory is of an unregulated home (i.e. not Barnardos or The Childrens Society etc) called Beechcroft House, Ringstead Road, Sutton, Surrey. This was run by a Miss Butler who David always refers to as his guardian. Later Miss Butler moved the home to Crouch House, Crouch, Boro Green, Sevenoaks, Kent before finally moving to 21 Vale Square, Ramsgate. David stayed here until WW2 broke out when he left for good. During his time with Miss Butler he remembers children being sold, allegedly to provide funds to keep the home going. He was also offered for sale but thank goodness was considered too scrawny by the men who "inspected" him. Somewhat ironically within a few years of these awful events he was embroiled in WW2 as a marine commando. However back to the main script. As explained before, he was given the name David John Buckle but on the day he left Ramsgate Miss Butler told him "never forget David that your real name is Clarke is with an e" - no more or less than that. For the rest of her life she refused to tell him anymore and took whatever else she knew to the grave. From this scrap of information his family have been able to obtain the birth certificate for David John Clarke which I referred to above. We know this same Hilda Marion Clarke married a Cecil Robert Dack in November 1929 and as a result of discovering this fact we are trying to trace members of the Dack family in an attempt to learn more about Dads mother and father, who he really is etc and maybe make contact with any (hitherto unknown to us) family members who might be interested to meet us. The poor chap and his family are desperate to find out something - they have emailed barnado's - with no luck as yet. Sorry for such a long winded message. Louise.
