    1. SCATES, JONES & PERCY at Albion Place, Ramsgate
    2. Graham Dixon
    3. Evening guys and guyesses, According to the Will of the owner of property at 26 Albion Place, Ramsgate, one Sophia C KNIGHT who died in 1904, the property had been looked after by two, apparently unmarried, sisters Eliza and Mary Ann SCATES who had lived in an associated cottage at 2 Cottage Road. Sophia's Will included a bequest of the cottage to Eliza. I am keen to hear from anyone with an interest in these two people or either property. b.t.w. - the other property was left to Sophia's unmarried niece, Isabella J JONES. In 1901 Mary Ann was listed as 'head' at the Albion Place address and there was also a housekeeper, Maud G PERCY living there. cheers Graham Dixon (Auckland, New Zealand)

    3. Evening again, For at least a few years from 1900 to 1903, and probably earlier, a property at 26 Albion Place, Ramsgate was owned by a Richard KNIGHT and / or his wife Sophia Caroline. If I read Sophia's Will correctly there may have been a cottage associated at 2 Cottage Road. I think that the Knights may have spent some time at this property although their main residence was in west London. I am keen to hear from anyone with an interest in these people or either property. cheers Graham Dixon (Auckland, New Zealand) ===============================

    1. ETHERIDGE of Ramsgate
    2. Graham Dixon
    3. Evening all, Benjamin Copeland ETHERIDGE was married in 1855 at Thanet to Mary Elizabeth TUFFNELL, daughter of the Tuffnell's in my previous post. Their children were born at their home at 11 Guildford Lawn, Ramsgate. Benjamin was a baptist minister at Ramsgate for some years before moving to Surrey. I am most keen to hear from anyone with an interest in these people. cheers Graham Dixon (Auckland, New Zealand)

    1. TUFFNELL of Ramsgate
    2. Graham Dixon
    3. Hello, I have recently developed an interest in the life and times of a Ramsgate family the identity of which I have just confirmed. I would very much like to hear from anyone with an interest in, or information about Samuel TUFFNELL (c.1795 - 1884) and his wife Hannah (nee KNIGHT) (1800 - 1881) who were living at 19 Spencer Square in Ramsgate in both the 1861 and 1881 census. They are listed as 'Landed property' - so were presumably fairly well off. I am new to this list, so am unsure of protocol, so please don't be upset or offended if I overstep the line, but I am wondering if s.k.s. with access to for instance the 1851 census may be able to look up these people and / or this address. Hannah's brother Richard or his wife Sophia also owned property in Ramsgate at least around 1900. I will cover this in another posting. cheers Graham Dixon (Auckland, New Zealand) ===============================

    3. Just had a look in the 1851 and 1861 census. In 1851 Edward, age 13 is shown as Bloxham and in 1861, age 24, as Trumpeter. It was not uncommon for children to assume the last name of the new spouse, so you won't be able to tell who's who unless you have the birth certs or baptisms. 1. Lansell Family
    2. Elizabeth Brooker
    3. Dear Anne, I returned to the Thanet website today and was delighted to see a familiar name, Lansell. I have a large file on this family and wonder if you have heard of the Lansell family in Bendigo Victoria. If you are related to Charlotte daughter of Henry Lansell and Rachel, then you are distantly related to the well known Australian "Quartz King of Bendigo", George Lansell. Charlotte and George would be first cousins. The Lansells were Huguenot from Vimy en Arras en Artois. I would be pleased to share my research of the Lansell family with you but I have nothing in my file about William Barker except the gleanings from the census. Rachel was the widow of James Peete when she married Henry Lansell. Rachel, baptized 13 Dec 1755 at St Peters Thanet, was the 9th (I think), child of Robert Witherden and Sarah Norwood. Rachel married James Peete in 1818 and he was buried at St John 22 Mar 1822 at age 32. There were two children from this marriage: Rachel, who died at age 2 years 7 months and was buried 29 March 1825, and Robert who was born after his father's death and was with Rachel in the 1841 census. Robert married in 1843 and you can follow him in the St Peter census. Rachel married Henry Lansell 24 April 1825. The 1837 ACC will of Sarah Witherden refers to her son-in-law Henry Lansell of St Peter, butcher, and also refers to her daughter Rachel wife of Henry Lansell. You have the names and dates of Rachel and Henry's two children. Gibbon would have been named after a brother of Henry's mother, Gibbon Rammell, and Charlotte was named after Henry's sister. Gibbon was with the family in 1841 and I have not found out what happened to him yet. You already know about Charlotte, her marriage and children. Charlotte was mentioned in the 1880 will of Henry's youngest sister, Susan. The will also nicely ties in the Rammell cousins. Henry was the son of William Lansell 1758-1846 and Elizabeth Rammell 1769-1857. Their children were Mary Ann 1792-1870 who did not marry, Elizabeth 1793- married Wm Thomas Matthew, Charlotte 1794-1873 married John Bayly, Thomas 1796-1871 married Elizabeth Budd, Henry 1798-1840 and Susan 1800-1880 married Charles Benjamin Gorely. Charlotte and John Bayly were the 2nd great grandparents of my husband. Five of the six children of Thomas Lansell and Elizabeth went to Australia: George, Wootton, Susan, Ann, and William, so probably you are related to any Lansells in Australia. Looking forward to hearing from you. Elizabeth Brooker, Etobicoke, Ont. Canada

    3. My name is Catharine Fright Olson and I live in Yellowknife Northwest Territories Canada. My Grandfather was Thomas Fright and his brother was Edward Fright who came as orphans to Canada in 1907. They were the sons of James and Christina Brand-Fright who are buried in Ramsgate. My family will be traveling to England next year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tom and Edward coming to Canada and want to meet our relatives and visit the area where they were raised. Edward was killed in WW1 and Tom is deceased. We have some pictures and a little information on our family but would like to fill in some blanks. If you could be of any assistance in tracing our family it would be greatly appreciated. Cathy_Olson@gov.nt.ca Cathy_Olson@gov.nt.ca -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Anne, I have no other details than were presented in the last e-mail. I looked at the images for the GRO (available through freeBMD) and there was no equivalent marriage in the handwritten original for the 3rd quarter 1857. Regards, Russell Anne <annpanni@bigpond.net.au> wrote: Hi Russell, Thank you so much for that. I have gone back to FreeBMD with this info and they are not listed for whatever reason. No wonder I couldn't find them and probably never would. Does the record you obtained this info from say what church and where, did they sign or just mark with a cross, and is there a witness. Also is it possible to send me a copy of the image as we all do with census images? If not could you give me the details so I can see if the LDS have it and can get it in? 3. Hi Anne, Nice to hear from you on a different list. Perhaps when I get back to my Cheltenham man I'll hear from you again. I appreciate all the help you have given me with my BARKER family. Thank you for these details. Would you mind sending me the census images when you have time please? In your 1841 census info there is a Robert Peete and IGI has Rachel PEELE marrying Henry Lansell so Rachel was the widow PEETE and Robert is her son and Charlotte's stepbrother. I've noted on the 1851 census Charlotte is a dressmaker. Her eldest dau. Rachel Barker was a dressmaker and went on to be a dressmaker to the Royal Court Buckingham Palace. Her younger sister Elizabeth became her apprentice and when her cousin from France came to live with them she was also her apprentice and her brother James was a tailor in Savill Row. I have recently met my 3rd cousin living here in Brisbane and he is descended through Charlotte and Williams dau Elizabeth and I am having a wonderful time meeting this side of my family via photographs and first hand knowledge from Ken. thank you once again Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Peat" <anne.peat@bigwindows.demon.co.uk> To: <Isle-of-Thanet-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 03, 2006 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [IoT] Looking for Charlotte Lansell > Anne, > This might help a bit. > 1841 > > Charlotte Lansell > Age: 12 > Estimated birth year: abt 1829 > Household: View other family members > Gender: Female > Where born: Kent, England > > Charlotte Lansell abt 1829 Kent, England St Peter Kent Gibbon Lansell > abt 1827 Kent, England St Peter Kent Rachel Lansell abt 1796 Kent, England > St Peter Kent > > Robert Peete abt 1826 Kent, England St Peter Kent > > Civil parish: St Peter > Hundred: Ringslow > County/Island: Kent > Country: England > > Street address: Charlotte Street > > Occupation: School mistress ( Rachel) labourer ( Robert) > > Source information: HO107/468/18 > Registration district: Isle of Thanet > Sub-registration district: Ramsgate > ED, institution, or vessel: 20 > Folio: 34 > Page: 26 > Line number: 7 > > and 1851 > > Charlotte Lansell > Age: 21 > Estimated birth year: abt 1830 > Relation: Daughter > Household: View other family members > Gender: Female > Where born: St Peters, Kent, England > > Civil parish: Thanet St Peter > Ecclesiastical parish: Broadstairs > Town: Broadstairs > County/Island: Kent > Country: England > > Street address: High Street > > Occupation: Dress maker > > > Source information: HO107/1630 > Registration district: Thanet > Sub-registration district: Ramsgate > ED, institution, or vessel: 1e > Folio: 72 > Page: 14 > > Rachel is on her own. 3. Hi Russell, Thank you so much for that. Sorry about all the questions. many thanks, Ann in Brisbane ----- Original Message ----- From: "RUSSELL HENSON" <russell.henson@btinternet.com> To: <Isle-of-Thanet-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 03, 2006 11:34 PM Subject: Re: [IoT] Looking for Charlotte Lansell > Anne, > > William BARKER and Charlotte LANSELL were married 2nd September 1857, > according to KentBMD. > > Regards, > > Russell Henson > > Anne Peat <anne.peat@bigwindows.demon.co.uk> wrote: > Anne, > This might help a bit. > 1841 > > Charlotte Lansell > Age: 12 > Estimated birth year: abt 1829 > Household: View other family members > Gender: Female > Where born: Kent, England > > Charlotte Lansell abt 1829 Kent, England St Peter Kent > Gibbon Lansell abt 1827 Kent, England St Peter Kent > Rachel Lansell abt 1796 Kent, England St Peter Kent > > Robert Peete abt 1826 Kent, England St Peter Kent > > Civil parish: St Peter > Hundred: Ringslow > County/Island: Kent > Country: England > > Street address: Charlotte Street > > Occupation: School mistress ( Rachel) labourer ( Robert) > > Source information: HO107/468/18 > Registration district: Isle of Thanet > Sub-registration district: Ramsgate > ED, institution, or vessel: 20 > Folio: 34 > Page: 26 > Line number: 7 > > and 1851 > > Charlotte Lansell > Age: 21 > Estimated birth year: abt 1830 > Relation: Daughter > Household: View other family members > Gender: Female > Where born: St Peters, Kent, England > > Civil parish: Thanet St Peter > Ecclesiastical parish: Broadstairs > Town: Broadstairs > County/Island: Kent > Country: England > > Street address: High Street > > Occupation: Dress maker > > > Source information: HO107/1630 > Registration district: Thanet > Sub-registration district: Ramsgate > ED, institution, or vessel: 1e > Folio: 72 > Page: 14 > > Rachel is on her own.
