    3. I toured Birchington Churchyard today and will type up as many as I can without going crazy before the weekend. I have covered roughly half of the Graves, I copied every readable stone. I stuck to the main entrance, later stones are here, and around the church itself, where the older stones are, the sandstone memorials have worn away. It a lovely place, quite well kept by the paths and only 30 odd graves which are completely covered by Ivy. I am not sure of the policies in this graveyard, to remove the ivy, so left these. Some stones have to be left for enviromental reasons, but no one around to ask today. I will do my best to finish the rest of the churchyard before the end of the summer. Hope your all enjoying the summer holidays Suzannah

    3. Yes, Jennie Burgess is her name. I was lucky enough to run into her by chance when I was there, and she was extremely helpful. She also showed me the baptism and marriage records for the church. At that time at least, these were still in the possession of the the church and had not been sent to a central archive or library. I was doing it for pleasure really and hoping to help others in the process. I have no ancestors there myself. Is it Jennie Burgess you mean? The church archivist (whose name I can't of course remember) has a transcription of all the graves in the church archives. This proved very helpful for some of the hard to read stones. I believe she is also the president of the local historical society, and I will do my best to find her name if you think this would be helpful. 3. The original names for Broadstairs, Margate and Ramsgate were, The Parish of St Peter in Thanet, The Parish of St John in Thanet, The Parish of St Laurence in Thanet, the names arising from the Trinity of Churches established by monks from St Augustine's Abbey. Minster St Mary was the Mother Church of Thanet and St John, St Peter and St Laurence its daughter Chucrhes. I am sure Manston is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, will look into it. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bingmbing@aol.com To: Isle-of-Thanet-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2006 10:55 PM Subject: [IoT] Domesday Book I went on to this new site of the National Archives released over the week-end I think. Out of some 450 items for Kent, nothing for Thanet except one item headed Minster. Is this what Thanet came under? Only names are church authorities, and Lord Godwine etc. No land or people of help for me, or did I miss something? Madie

    1. Digging for Thanet
    2. Suzannah Foad
    3. History loving homeowners in Broadstairs are being offered to have an archeological dig in their back garden. The Thanet Archeological Society wants to to dig test squares in as many houses as possible in the chessboard estate area of Broadstairs. The loaction is being targeted after a ROMAN BAKERY was discovered in Bishop's Avenue two years ago. The Society wants to dig one metre square test holes and the first one was completed at the home of Janine and Bob Brown in Bishop's Avenue last month. Marilyn Bishop from the society said "The information gathered is very valuable and all adds to the research being conducted in the North Foreland area. "The society members are assisted by the Professional archeologists of the Thanet Trust for Archeology who give up their time to help with the digs identifying finds". To take part, leave a message on the Society's Voice mail 07906 360725. http://www.thanetarch.co.uk/index.html
