Dear Veronica, Boatmen can refer to members of the Navy, fishermen, members of the coastguard, and also people who worked on the canals. It's a bit broad unfortunately. I have coastguards in my family history so I've looked up a few relevant sites before. Boatmen were members of the coastguard service, which was part of customs and excise. There is a lot of info on Coastguards, but Charles Ashton is not listed. www.genuki.org.uk/big/Coastguards/. Just to note, the coastguards on Thanet would not have been based at Minster, which is not on the Coast. But, when looking at records the wives do not always live in the stations, so Emma's mother may have been at Minster for the birth. Details of Archives for Customs and Excise can be found at: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=299&CATLN=2&accessmethod=5 microfiche though, not online. In the 1881 census there is a Charles Ashton living in Derbyshire who was born Liverpool 1807 and gives his occupation as retired Customs and Excise Clerk- I wonder if this is your Charles Ashton? Hope this helps a little Louise veronica howorth wrote: >Dear Suzannah > > Thanks for your reply and census information. That's certainly the right people on the 1891 census but unfortunately I don't think its the same Edwin Bolton on the 1881 and 1871. I should have mentioned that i traced Edwin on the 1841 census which showed him living at Pall Mall, St. James Square, Westminster. He was aged 10 and living with his father Peter Bolton who was a Tailor and mother Jane, along with his brothers and sister. I also found Christening records for him and his siblings on the Family Search IGI which shows he was christened at St. James, Westminster. I also found him on the 1851 at which time he was a Clerk staying at the home of a sister in law [ I presume] in Chelsea. Again, his birthplace is given as St. James, West [Westminster] On his Marriage certificate in 1875 his occupation is Comedian and Emma's is Artiste. On my Grandmother Florence's Birth Certificate it gives Edwin's occupation as Artist which I assumed to mean Artist in the theatrical > sense rather than painterly, although i suppose that could tie in with the ornamental painter, but the Bermondsey birthplace and unmarried status in1881 doesn't fit. > It is Emma though who is proving to be a woman of mystery as far as her earlier life is concerned. I know that she died in 1929 I have just discovered her burial place in Shipley, West Yorkshire which is where Florence and husband Sam Allen had gone to take over management of a local theatre. Emma had looked after the children [my father and his siblings] sadly they can't be questioned as they are all dead now. I seem to recall one of my aunts who always spoke of Emma with great affection, saying that she [Emma] had been disowned by her family for marrying beneath her. It is also believed that her occupation had been a Lady's Maid before taking to the stage. Apart from that i have no clues. I have started going through the 1841 Census for Minster in Sheppey on the Ancestry website. I can't find Minster in Thanet though, does it come under another district? Dear Brian I also have Thanet Pages, but can't place your Edward or his wife. My Edward was born in 1773 in Gravesend, Kent and was buried at St. Lawrence's, Thanet, Kent 13 Sep 1835. He was the son of John Page and Sarah. His wife was Hannah Gibbens, daughter of John Gibbens and Elizabeth Mungham. Edward and Hannah appear to have had three sons named Edward. The first two died young, and the third one was christened at Ramsgate 19th Jan 1812. Judging by the dates, your Edward may well have been an uncle of my Edward who married Hannah Gibbens. Do you go any further back than that? Dear Anne, All the lists on Rootsweb have been under construction and was down completely yesterday. They have not given us a complete date when the upheaval will be finished but us list owners have a whole new format to contend with and learn. I have manually approved your message in the last 5 minutes so it should reach the list today, unless Rootswebs have other idea. The three address you sent are all exactly the same and it doesn't matter if its capital or small letters. I use isle-of-thanet-l@rootsweb.com Any questions, just ask. I wonder if anyone could help me find the baptisms of Stephen Ratcliff(e) and Mary Marsh in the Thanet area. I know they married at St Laurence Ramsgate on 6 Nov 1806 and had 4 children baptised there Mary 1808, William 1809, George 1812 and Eliza 1814. There is a slight possibility that they came from the area around Ash although they were married by banns in St Laurence. Any sightings of them would be gratefully received. Many thanks Jackie

My great grandfather came to Queensland, Australia about 1865 and said he was GEORGE HENRY Brown, but I now think he was HENRY SAMUEL Brown. The will of Joseph Brown Snr. said his daughter ALICE was married to JOHN POOLE; and the will did not give the whereabouts or occupation of HENRY SAMUEL, though he was a beneficiary of the will. If anyone has researched any part of the family I would be very happy to hear from them. I would like a census lookup for John Gambrill born 1827ish and living in St. Nicholas at Wade - his family were living there from the 1871 census upto the 1901 census. I've managed to find out that they lived in The Street but am trying to track down the name/number of the house - I have just moved to St. Nich and want to see if the house is still there. My Ancestry sub has run out and so I can't download any images. John Gambrill would have been my 3x great grandfather. Many thanks. Dear Listers A lot of Thanet people came to Oz. My descendants are one. I have an extensive datbase on my lines and their early times in Oz. They were very early settlers. My Lines Edward Page who married Bethia Harlow. Edward buried 13 dec 1799 at St Nicholas at Wade, married 12 Oct 1775 at St Nicholas at Wade. Bethia buried 22nd March 1830 at St Nicholas at Wade. Children Bethia, Edward, John Ann, John. My line Edward Page born about 1776, married 27 Dec 1802 at St Nicholas at Wade. Died 9 June 1846 in Melbourne, Australia. Wife Margaret Bourne born about 1782, died 5 August 1839 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Children Eliza, Anne, Edward, John William. I am from John William born 1st May 1818 at St Laurence. Died 9 October 1863 at Woodend, Victoria. John and his brother Edward came from Tasmania very early and settled near Melbourne or rather a small village to become Melbourne. They are celebrated in historic records of the early settlers and bought had the first sheep to lamb probably in Victoria since Victoria, then part of New Soth Wales was settled from Tasmania or Van Dieman's Land. Edward Page and his wife Margaret nee Bourne lived at Eccles or Acol at some time, certinly 1823 and also spent time at Herne Bay. Edward the son was born at Herne Bay. He was a farm labourer. Edward the father aged 47 was tried at Canterbury and received a life sentence for a trivial offence and was transported to Australia. The family followed shorthy after on a ship for female prisoners and familes of prisoners. There may be Listers who might connect to me. I have been helped by other listers but there may be some new ones. PAGE, BOURNE, HARLOW are names of interest. I have a fascinating lot of info on the sons Edward and John Willian in Australia recorded in the Library in Melbourne. Brian Page Mount Gambier South Australia

Hi Suzannah, I would love any kind of information about the MINTER family. I do know the following: Martin Minter married Fanny Morphew in St John the Baptist, Margate on 13 May 1822. They had 11 children of which two arrived in Australia in the 1850's/60's. I can not find who or when they arrived here in Australia. There parents were Henry Minter who married Mary Young at St Lawrence, Ramsgate on 8 Sept 1783. They had 15 children. Here it gets a bit messy as it almost appears that he had two wives, the other one being a Sarah Phillpott who also had many children. On my visit to St Johns I noticed that the headstones were unreadable, which was a real shame so I guess there is no way in knowing who owns what. Any way should you ever come across any information on the MINTER family I would be very grateful if you could pass it on.
