    3. May I ask how you found out she was a relative if you don't have anythinmg on Ann Wells, I ask as you may have a few dates which you forgot to list? I have no idea if yours but, On the Minster 1841 Census there is Ann Wells aged 65, Gardener. Her son John is living with her, aged 30 No occupation listed. Also a William Wootton aged 13. Next door is an Ann Wells aged 25, living or working for a William Tappenden aged 32. Maybe this Ann is a daughter. 3. I'll think youll find that the Coastguards Cottages were down on the Sandwich Road, on the sea side just north of the Ebbsfleet turning, roughly where the nature reserve is today. The cottages, two of them if I remember, were still there in the late 1960's, when I used to travel the Sandwich Road. This area comes under Minster Disrict. 1. [ISLE-OF-THANET] Britannia Pub Margate
    2. Suzannah Foad
    3. Good Evening listers, I am writing an article on the Britannia Public House on Fort Hill in Margate. Known prior to 1901 as the Britannia Hotel. I have traced all the owners/managers from 1841-1891 from just the Census entries. I am looking to find some information on these landlords, namely Alfred Henry Grant c.1833-1904 and Robert Dunk Peal c.1805-1871. 1851 is Robert D Peal with Wife Jane. Again in 1861 but by 1871 he was widowed and living with his daughter Jane and son in law William Miles at another Public House the Belle Vue in Cliftonville until his death in Q Sept 1871. 1871 Census Alfred H Grant aged 38 is with his wife Sarah also aged 38 at the Britannia and also the 1881 and 1891 Census I am going to check the 1901 next. Does anyone have these people in their trees? Have any old memories of the Public House, its right next door to Margate Police Station which was built 1969, before that it was Cobb's Brewery. Legend, and I say legend as have not found anything to supports this, but the Britannia was supposedly Cobb's Hunting lodge before it was a public house. I have a good picture of the Pub with the Minstrels outside c.1870, but no others. Would be very grateful if anyone can assist. Many Thanks Suzannah

I had been trying to work out who George had married (other than a Susan or Susannah, of course LOL!). I will have a hunt for Emma in 1871 to see if I can find her. Charles Thomas makes sense - named for Susan's father and George's grandfather AND his brother - I have found Thomas Redwood Wright b 1818, Margate, living in Limehouse and running the Colet Arms as a licensed victualler (1861). In 1871, he is a Licensed Victualler (out of business) living in Stratford-Le-Bow and in 1881, a widower with a live-in housekeeper. He died in 1882. In 1851, Thomas worked for a widow, Emma Gurney, who was a wine and spirit merchant. I will contact the archives to see what they say - I am long overdue a visit to Kent! I would very much like to see a picture of the workhouse too. Once again, thanks for the help Kind regards Pam

    3. Hi Pam, We cannot say for sure how Samuel Bushell met Emma but we can SUPPOSE that he had come into Ramsgate harbour on a Ship, being a Master Mariner and all. Did you find Emma on the 1871 Census as wasn't at home with her widowed mother then so I thought maybe she had gone to Hampshire or Hastings where she gave birth or at least registered her daughter Harriett's birth? The 1851 Census you mention, the wife is Susan Wright 28 Born Chatham George Wright 30 Born Ramsgate Corporal Marine Charles Wright 1 born Gillingham Births Mar 1850 Wright Charles Thomas Medway 5413 Deaths Dec 1851 Wright Charles Thomas Medway 5267 I did find George's Christening in Littlebourne 29 AUG 1820 to John Redwood Wright and Jane Terry Marriages Mar 1849 Wright George Medway 5387 Marriages Mar 1849 Bennett Susanna Medway 5387 Susan Bennett aged 15 is a Servant to Coal Merchant Benjamin Rous of Nelson Alley Broad Street Gillingham on the 1841 Census Class: HO107; Civil Parish: Gillingham; County: Kent; Enumeration District: 12; Page: 13 - Hundred: Lathe of Aylesford Chatham and Gillingham Possible baptism for Susan and thats 12th October 1823 Chatham Kent to Charles and Mary Bennett, also baptised on the same day to same parents is Elizabeth Bennett. You can contact Whitfield Archives near Dover to see if they have George's admission papers to the Minster Union Workhouse but I have a feeling they will suggest you take a trip down there to view them, or it will be a huge fee for them to search for you. Would you like to see a picture of the workhouse? Good luck with it all Regards Suzannah ----- Original Message ----- From: Pam (Ntl) To: Suzannah Foad ; isle-of-thanet@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 12:04 AM Subject: Re: [ISLE-OF-THANET] George Redwood Wright and family Dear Suzannah Thanks for all this information! I think I have found George in the 1851 Census, at the Royal Marines Barracks in Chatham, along with his wife and baby son Charles (who I assume died in infancy, as I can find no trace of him later on). There was also a niece - Emma Thompson aged 3, born in Gillingham. The image is pretty grubby though! I have found John Redwood Wright and his wife Jane (Terry), who were, I believe, George's parents. John was born in Littlebourne. I think his parents were Thomas Redwood Wright (b 1760) and Sarah Sandwell and I believe (although I would need to prove this line) that Thomas Redwood Wright's parents were Thomas Wright (b 1735) and Thomazine Skinner. Thomazine's parents were Noble Skinner and Margaret Redwood and I think that this is when the Redwood name came into the Wright family and was used down the years. All of these families were from Thanet. I think that George may have had a drink (and possibly gambling) problem as my mother remembers her grandmother Maria (George's daughter) being very anti-drink and gambling - if that landed them in the workhouse, then I could possibly understand her antipathy. However, I guess that George may just have been discharged from the Royal Marines with no pension to fall back on - does anyone know if there is some way that I could find out how long they were in the workhouse for? Maria married Frederick Tom Porter and I have his navy service record, showing all the ships that he served in - he entered as a boy sailor and had a long career in the Navy. Before he (finally) retired, he was in the Coastguard Service and I have his Good Conduct Medal - seems I have become the custodian of the family history! I am intrigued by Emma, though. I wonder where she met Samuel? He was a Rotherhithe boy and when I've looked him up in the various census returns, he was living with his widowed sister (Harriet Pentreath) the last record was in 1871 when her was living with her in Stratford Le Bow - he married Emma after his sister's death. Thanks for the help, kind regards, Pam.

    3. Dear Louise, The Liverpool Charles is a possibility. Thanks for that and the other info' which is certainly helpful. Regards, Veronica. Louise Harris <henny.harris@virgin.net> wrote: Dear Veronica, Boatmen can refer to members of the Navy, fishermen, members of the coastguard, and also people who worked on the canals. It's a bit broad unfortunately. I have coastguards in my family history so I've looked up a few relevant sites before. Boatmen were members of the coastguard service, which was part of customs and excise. There is a lot of info on Coastguards, but Charles Ashton is not listed. www.genuki.org.uk/big/Coastguards/. Just to note, the coastguards on Thanet would not have been based at Minster, which is not on the Coast. But, when looking at records the wives do not always live in the stations, so Emma's mother may have been at Minster for the birth. Details of Archives for Customs and Excise can be found at: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=299&CATLN=2&accessmethod=5 microfiche though, not online. In the 1881 census there is a Charles Ashton living in Derbyshire who was born Liverpool 1807 and gives his occupation as retired Customs and Excise Clerk- I wonder if this is your Charles Ashton? Hope this helps a little Louise veronica howorth wrote: >Dear Suzannah > > Thanks for your reply and census information. That's certainly the right people on the 1891 census but unfortunately I don't think its the same Edwin Bolton on the 1881 and 1871. I should have mentioned that i traced Edwin on the 1841 census which showed him living at Pall Mall, St. James Square, Westminster. He was aged 10 and living with his father Peter Bolton who was a Tailor and mother Jane, along with his brothers and sister. I also found Christening records for him and his siblings on the Family Search IGI which shows he was christened at St. James, Westminster. I also found him on the 1851 at which time he was a Clerk staying at the home of a sister in law [ I presume] in Chelsea. Again, his birthplace is given as St. James, West [Westminster] On his Marriage certificate in 1875 his occupation is Comedian and Emma's is Artiste. On my Grandmother Florence's Birth Certificate it gives Edwin's occupation as Artist which I assumed to mean Artist in the theatrical > sense rather than painterly, although i suppose that could tie in with the ornamental painter, but the Bermondsey birthplace and unmarried status in1881 doesn't fit. > It is Emma though who is proving to be a woman of mystery as far as her earlier life is concerned. I know that she died in 1929 I have just discovered her burial place in Shipley, West Yorkshire which is where Florence and husband Sam Allen had gone to take over management of a local theatre. Emma had looked after the children [my father and his siblings] sadly they can't be questioned as they are all dead now. I seem to recall one of my aunts who always spoke of Emma with great affection, saying that she [Emma] had been disowned by her family for marrying beneath her. It is also believed that her occupation had been a Lady's Maid before taking to the stage. Apart from that i have no clues. I have started going through the 1841 Census for Minster in Sheppey on the Ancestry website. I can't find Minster in Thanet though, does it come under another district? Of course she may well have born after the Census took place. >I'm also wondering if there are any organizations or Websites that might have records of Boatmen in Kent? > Sorry for being so long-winded, and thanks once again for your interest and help. > > Veronica. > >Suzannah Foad wrote: > Dear Veronica > >You didn't mention a date they married nor the Grooms name, so I assumed >this to be correct > >Cannot find anything about Emma nor her connection to Thanet. 2. Can I add my ten pence worth? Just a small correction to add to this- Minster was once one of the busiest ports in East Kent- I am not sure whether there was a coastguard station there, but don't rule it out!! Lynne

    3. Dear Suzannah Thanks for all this information!

    3. I see George in the Wokhouse in 1861 born Littlebourne. With him is his wife Susanna (What a nice name ;0) born Chatham as is his Children Maria aged 18, Emma aged 13, and Elizabeth aged 12. Class: RG11; Piece: 990; Folio: 8; Page: 10 I was wondering why Emma left her widowed mother and ran to Hampshire to get maried. You say Harroett was born before they married. Good luck Suzannah ----- Original Message ----- From: Pam (Ntl) To: isle-of-thanet-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 12:01 AM Subject: [SPAM] [ISLE-OF-THANET] George Redwood Wright/Isle of Thanet workhouse Hi, would anyone have any information on George Redwood Wright or his family? In 1861 they were in the Isle of Thanet Union Workhouse - he is described as a discharged Marine and I believe that he died before the 1871 Census. His daughter Maria married Frederick Tom Porter and they lived in St Margaret's Bay until at least 1901. They then moved to Shirley, Southampton. I have traced back to where the Redwood name enters the family but would be grateful for any information on the Wrights or the Porters, also anything on Emma Redwood Wright (another of George's daughters) who married Samuel Bushell (a retired ship's master and considerably older than Emma). They had a daughter Harriet, born a few months before they married (the family legend has it that they eloped). Hope someone can help - both Minster and Monkton feature in family "legend" but sadly there is no-one left who can remember any details.
