Hi Mike, Haine Hospital was founded in 1877 as Northwood Isolation Hospital. In 1902 it became known as Ramsgate Infectious Diseases Hospital & in 1948 - 1956 the Isolation Hospital. It then became a geriatric hospital & believe it stayed that way until it closed. The records are held at the East Kent Archives at Whitfield. The hospital was built mainly cos of the Public Health Act of 1875. The rural & urban sanitary authorities joined forces to fund the hospital for Thanet. The architect was George M Hinds of Ramsgate who had designed the dispensary in Broad Street, Ramsgate (it's still there, but is a private house now) & the builders were Gore Brothers, also of Ramsgate. I've got some more info about the hospital, but as it's quite long, I'll send it off list if you'd like it. Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent I was sent to Haine Isolation hospital during the 1960's. It made me wonder if anyone knows the history of Haine Hospital. I believe I read it started in 1897 and closed in 1985. It stayed shut and abandoned until it was knocked down for Westwood Cross, is this correct? Also was it always an isolation hospital? Any ideas anyone Thanks Mike ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ISLE-OF-THANET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

For anyone with an interest in the Local History of Broadstairs and St Peter's and its role during the Great War, then this book is a must. Complied from local newspapers of the Period, Tony Euden has put together a fascinating detailed history of the everyday life of the towns. Many local family names are mentioned within from Rationing, Deserters, and my sympathy going to a poor fellow finding Margarine washed up the beach and subsequently being fined £5 as finders wasn't keepers! 120 A4 sized pages at £9.99 a great addition to any local history collection. The book can be purchased on Ebay, Albion Bookshops The Albion Bookshop 44-46, Albion Street BROADSTAIRS Kent CT10 1LX : The Albion Bookshop 235 Northdown Road Cliftonville, Margate Kent CT9 2PJ And Michaels Bookshop, 72 King Street Ramsgate Kent www.michaelsbookshop.com

Hi Ted, my John Harvey was born about 1696, his wife Mary Paramour was born 1696 at St Nicholas at Wade they married 1717 in Chislet. Regards June
These are two shchools I attended and would like to know more about them. I started at St Gregory's, Margate in about 1959-1960 and at that time I'm sure it also had senior schoolchildren until Holy Cross, Broadstairs, started. Holy Cross was a converted convent and i think it was opened in the early 60's to take the seniors from the over crowded children from St. Gregory's. The Headmaster at the time was Mr Knight and he left St. Gregory's to become headmaster at Holy Cross. Unfortunately I believe it closed in the nineties after poor ofsted reports. Any information on these two schools would be great. Mike
Hi listers Cant remember if asked before but does anyone have any information or any old photographs of J W Penney boot repairers in Chapel Road, St Lawrence, Ramsgate? He was my great grandfather on my dads side. It is listed in Kellys directory in 30s, but would love to see some photos. Thanks Lorna
While we're on books with Thanet in, Joan le Mesurier's autobiography "Lady don't Fall Backwards", covers a similar period. Her father managed Merrie England in Ramsgate. Margaret Lewington

..has an autobiography out - and the first 100 pages or so describes life in post-war Ramsgate. Chapter 1 is entitled 'Life on the plains' - the plains in question being the Plains of Waterloo. I don't think it will help anyone in a genealogical sense but she does give a lot of places name checks, like Vyes the grocers and so on. A nice read. Richard
Dear Suzannah If you Google Listed buildings you will come up with a number of sites for different parts of the country and also the listed buildings register, which may be what you are looking for. It is an English Heritage site.
