    3. If someone was in the Workhouse in say 1851 what are their chances of coming from an area in London to the Workhouse? Or did the workhouse exist solely for the use of people from the Thanet area? My ancestor Thomas Hills was a Baker and in 1841 is in Stepney then he suddenly appears in the Minster Workhouse in the 51 census with all of his family. OR is there two Thomas Hills both bakers? Cheers Anna

    3. It was also known as Old Spike. I was sent there for college placement back in 1980 when I was but a slip of a young thing !! One of my most enduring memories is of an old lady coming in crying. She was so upset & terribly ashamed to think that she'd *ended up in the workhouse*. No amount of telling her it was now an NHS geriatric hospital helped. She was adamant that she'd never leave there alive & she didn't. She died the following week & I swear it was because she was honestly believed that she was in the workhouse & no one left there alive. My ggg gran died there in 1893, but, of course, I didn't find THAT out till years later Probably a good job, really, cos if I knew in 1980, I don't suppose I'd have got much work done !! I'd have been too busy nosing around, taking photos & trying to find out where she'd been. On second thoughts, that might have been a good idea !!! Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent Yes it was a Hospital for the elderly who saw it as a place that they went to die. It was called Hill House Hospital It was a Hospital in the 60s and probably well before that and up to I think the early 90s when it was demolished and a housing estate built on the site, Yes it did carry a bit of a stigma and one of my relatives who was elderly was moved there from the main hospital and actually died there. 3. Hi Tony, Was your Louisa Sayer 1858 born in Birchington to Henry Sayer 1796-1882 and Sarah Mirams 1803-1878. Henry's brother Edward 1796-1863 married my Mary FOAD 1796-1863. Another brother John Mirams 1794-1873 married Mary Foad's sister Jane FOAD born 1799. The Minster Records are at the East Kent Archives Centre, Enterprise Zone, Honeywood Road, Whitfield, Dover CT16 3EH. Holdings include: Guardians' minutes (1835-1930); Ledger (1835-1930, with gaps); Births and baptisms (1848-66, 1905-29); Deaths (1866-1931); Creed register (1905-30); Admissions and discharges (1872-1930); Inmates' complaints (1895-1909); Punishment book (1895-1914); etc. Good luck Suzannah From:"A.D.Reynolds" <adr@westlodge37.freeserve.co.uk> To:isle-of-thanet@rootsweb.com Date:Sat, 21 Oct 2006 20:58:59 +0100 Subject:[ISLE-OF-THANET] minster workhouse Can anyone help with Minster Workhouse records? I contacted Kent Archives a while ago and there seemed then to be some confusion as to their exact whereabouts. Louisa Sayer b.1858 gave birth to my grandmother Eliza Sarah there 21 August 1878 and married Frederick James Cox or Cocks on 20 October. I have assumed he was the putative father but wonder if her admission notes might give information. William H.Mirams' death was registered by the Workhouse Master 3 June 1906. His H was recorded as Henry. My great grandfather was William Holloway Mirams and he is the only W.H. I can find. Again, I have assumed they are the same but would like to be more sure. The name is so unusual I am surprised at the apparent error. I once mentioned the Workhouse in complete innocence when staying with my grandparents and the response was distinctly "shock horror". Advice appreciated, Tony Reynolds in Lincoln ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ISLE-OF-THANET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. If it's any help I have a Mary Ann Mirams born about 1840 in Margate and died about September 1884 in Thanet. She married Robert Setterfield in June 1868 in Thanet and bore him 7 children. I know it's not a lot but it may fit the jigsaw somewhere. Chris

    3. For the Pantony researcher I came across this is the Broadstairs and St Peter's mail 27th Dec 1916 Accompanied by his Photo in his uniform which I can scan for you. Suzannah SAD NEWS For Broadstairs Wife Pte Charles W Pantony, of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regt., who was reported missing after the attack at Loos on September 25th 1915, has now officially been reported killed on that date. Although close upon fourteen months after he had failed to answer roll call on that Memorable day, his wife, who resides at 2 Wrotham Avenue, Broadstairs had not given up hope of her husband still being alive. Pte Pantony volunteered for the colours in September 1914 and proceeded to the Western Front with his battalion in March of the same year. He was doing duty for a considerable time as a sniper. Previous to enlisting, the gallant soldier was employed by Mr J T May, of Broadstairs, as a painter and had a wide circle of friends among whom he was much respected. Article on Loos for that date here http://www.webmatters.net/france/ww1_loos.htm
