Yes amongst the stars who appeared at the Theatre for Summer seasons was Benny Hill who was there as a support to Reg Varney, I believe this was late 50s early 60s. There used to be signed photos in the Theatre from those that appeared I wonder what happened to them Sean -----Original Message----- From: isle-of-thanet-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:isle-of-thanet-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of LAWRENCE BRIDGER Sent: 26 October 2006 22:56 To: isle-of-thanet@rootsweb.com; Isle of Thanet Subject: Re: [ISLE-OF-THANET] The Lido, Margate Hi Mike, It appears that you have certainly stirred some memories of the Lido amongst the listers. My father was the sub postmaster of the Lido Post Office between 1961 and 1971 on the corner of Ethelbert Road and Ethelbert Terrace right opposite the tower. I lived in the top flat so you could see right down into the sun terrace where Tony Savage used to play the organ for all the pensioners and they used to have a singsong every day. At the side of the terrace was the Jamaica Inn. Sheriff Danny Arnold used to come in the Post Office regularly and every Sunday lunch time he would be climbing all over the Lido roof with his cowboys having a pretend gun fight to advertise his Golden Garter Saloon to the new arrivals, nearly everyone at that time arrived on Saturdays. If the weather was warm the roof of the theatre would slide open. Loads of stars used to appear at the theatre, the one we used to see most of was Bill Maynard, (Greengrass) who used to drive around in an open Landrover, and every week he would be in to post a registered letter. I think Charlie Drake was there one season. Early one evening I was standing outside the Post Office before the visitors were going to the shows when the tower, which is a chimney, suddenly belched out vast clouds of black smoke. It was obvious something had caught fire so I phoned for the fire brigade. The fish and chip shop on the slope down to the sun terrace was ablaze and we ended up with six or seven fire engines deployed with hoses everywhere. I think that must have occurred in the late sixties. I see you have already had a reply from Sean, it's a small world, when we left the Lido Post Office, I worked at the DHSS and Sean was one of my bosses for a few years. With regard to our Langston connections I haven't done any research on them recently, I've been more involved with my research into Garlinge and Dent de Lion which is coming along quite well. I see you were making enquiries regarding the isolation hospital a few weeks ago. I think you will find that the records are at the archive centre at Whitfield. If my memory is not playing tricks I believe they are not available for research, they are closed for something like 75 or 100 years. When I was at the centre regularly about three years ago I think I saw the closure notice on their index file. Hi Yes I can give you some info re the Lido My father Al Doherty used to appear there in the Golden Garter along with Sheriff Danny Arnold who sadly passed away a few years ago. My father died 25 years ago this week. He did several summer seasons with Danny and some without. Other Artists that appeared in the Golden Garter were George Brown and I am still in touch with his daughter and son and in fact we play in a band Alabama Express to continue the tradition. Others who appeared in the Golden Garter are Ronnie Winters did a season there also Jean Reeves, (seen in many TV ads afterwards) Jimmy Grant Jan Holly now living in Texas she has a website with pictures of the Golden Garter http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/guynew/sheet/jan.htm Les Bagulay (Piano) his son edits the Country music magazine Country Music People Also the Lido Theatre were dad put on many Country shows and I also appeared with him in a summer season with Tommy Trinder I rember Les Shannon appearing there also Tony Savage used to be the organist on the Sun Terrace and also in the Jamaica inn. Dad also used to run a Country Music club on Fridays in the winter in the Jamaica inn There was also Hades night club in the Lido complex along with the French bar next to the Golden Garter and also the Old Tyme Music hall on the upper floor. There was also a snooker hall where I first experienced a full size snooker table. And not forgetting the Lido swimming pool and the Miss Lido competitions they used to have there. I could go on would love to see any photos people have of the Golden Garter I have some which I will have to scan Sean Doherty -----Original Message----- From: isle-of-thanet-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:isle-of-thanet-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Langston Sent: 26 October 2006 19:11 To: Isle of Thanet Subject: [ISLE-OF-THANET] The Lido, Margate Hi all My parents and grandfather were involved with the Lido during the 1960's. I can certainly help with the Lido information. My Grandfather was a Muscian there, also in a Band called Les Shannon and his Music Makers, he worked there from the early 1950's till 1970 when he died at Haine Hospital. If you send me your address off list I will post you a wad or two! I have interior pictures, exterior, stars, posters, adverts and booklets. I also have a picture of the Regular Deputy Sheriff Danny Arnold in the Golden Garter Saloon in 1959 with his Vigilantes. Dreamland Remembered by Nick Evans gives a third of his book to the Lido, with excellent glossy pictures and a history of both Dreamland and the Lido. My father worked in Broadstairs during the 1960's. For a time at a place called Harrows Stores in the High Street and also for Kent & Thanet Casinos, not sure where that was in Broadstairs. If anyone had information on these I would love to know. I believe he also worked in Margate at the Classic which was also a casino.
All the locations are very close. Flint Row was a lovely little cluster of cottages. In present day my Grandmother lived at Flint House, which has been built on the site. If you are unsure of any of the locations I can have a look through my bits and bobs and dig out some old and current maps. And when Flu free will take a wander over to Dane Hill and see which ones are still standing. Its not even 2 minutes from my house. I have a map showing Prospect Row, but only up to number 6. I also have a picture to hand looking down Dane Hill present day. I would like what you have on the Holloway's, I find it interesting to see they lived in Margate and can also keep it to one side until new listers arrive looking for the family names. Hi Thanet researchers, Doing research on HARRISON side of the family from Margate and trying to find parents of John Slater HARRISON born in Margate abt 1804. Does anyone have access to Parish records possibly at St. John's for that time period? I have found him on the 1841, 1851, 1861 & 1871 census, living in Oxford. All show born in Margate, Kent. Checked the LDS site and it just gives where he was living in Oxford and that he married Louisa Scott. Any help always appreciated. ~Elaine
I had a lot of help from Susannah (thanks again) when I subscribed to this list last year and having done a little more research and found more contacts it seemed a good idea to join again. I am researching my husband's family originating in Deal with James Smith (b.1764) married to Martha (? - no surname) I am told by a familiy member that this couple had 10 children but a search on the IGI on line reveals only one named Margaret b.1800 in Deal. Would anyone have any idea which church this might have been and if the parish records are likely to reveal more information that is in the IGI? Any suggestions as to how to identify a surname for Martha - eg marriage records? Again, nothing on the IGI that I can bring up. If my contact is correct the first child was born in 1787 and called Elizabeth Watson Smith. Could it maybe therefor be Martha Watson?? Carol Smith (was Richardson last year) Derby, UK
Dear Carol, The only info in the IGI for Deal is the following Town or Parish (Church or Chapel) Births or Christenings Deal (Ebenezer Wesleyan) C068171 1806-1837 (Independent) C068161 1802-1837 C068162 1681-1802 The main church was St Leonard with christening records from 1559.Copies are available at the Center for Kentish Studies, Kent Family History Society and the SOG. Then there is also St George's which used to be a chapelry to St Leonard. Christenings from 1781. St Andrew was a chapel of ease, but their records start in 1852, so not what you are looking for. I have fiche for St Leonard's and St George's - not sure if they cover the dates you're interested in. I may get a chance to look tomorrow when I'm at my local LDS. I volunteer there. If the regulars show up then they generally don't need help, but if a new person comes, then I can spend all morning with them and so won't get chance to look at my fiche. How did you get back to James Smith? Best wishes Elizabeth Carol Richardson wrote: >I had a lot of help from Susannah (thanks again) when I subscribed to this list last year and having done a little more research and found more contacts it seemed a good idea to join again. > >I am researching my husband's family originating in Deal with James Smith (b.1764) married to Martha (? - no surname) I am told by a familiy member that this couple had 10 children but a search on the IGI on line reveals only one named Margaret b.1800 in Deal. Dear Carol, I'm sure that if Suzannah was feeling well, she'd point out that Deal is not part of the Isle of Thanet, so is not discussed here. There is a kent Rootsweb list - see the following link: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/KENT-ENG.html plus the Kent Family History Society has a mailing list for society members and a Deal Branch: http://www.kfhs.org.uk/ http://www.kfhs-deal.freeuk.com/ I will e-mail you off-list with more information on Deal. > >Carol Smith (was Richardson last year) >Derby, UK > > > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ISLE-OF-THANET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >
Hello Tony, Thank you for your get well wishes, still suffering.! Edward Miriams was baptised at Birchington 23 May 1803 to John and Mary Siblings John 18th Sep 1803 Thomas 7th April 1805 Sarah 30th Nov 1806 James 24th July 1808 No other children baptised at Birchington and I wonder if this is John who married Mary Twyman in 1799 at Minster. Pat Kendell, or Maid of Kent lister on the IOT has a Jane baptised 1816 to John and Mary Tywman so they may have moved to Ramsgate. Hi Susannah, That looks good. Interestingly Louisa Sayer's daughter Eliza Sarah, (my grandmother), married Frank William MIRAMS in 1903 but not the same line as yours. He was the son of William Holloway Mirams and Emily HEWETT of Birchington; Wm.Holloway's parents were Edward Mirams b.abt 1802 and Mary Ann SAUNDERS (born Jersey, C.I. abt 1807) but I haven't got any further back reliably except to say that my late Aunt found the marriage of a Mary HOLAWAY in a Parish Register which she obviously thought significant. Hope you're getting over the flu bug. Keep taking the tablets !! :o) Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent Hello Pat, Ann 1816 was daughter of John Miriams and Mary Twyman who married 12 Oct 1799 in Minster. Cant tie them in with mine...yet! Suzannah x I see a Sarah Miriams amongst this lot & I'd like to add an Ann Miriams to the mixture in case anyone is looking for her. Ann, daughter of John & Mary Miriams, born 1816 in Ramsgate. Married Charles Fielding Frisby WILLMOTH on 11 March 1838 at St. Laurence. (Charles was the brother of my ggg gran Sarah Bonsey Willmoth, who married James Collyer). Charles & Ann had 8 children: Charles Fielding, Sarah Ann, William Ayles, James Collyer, Richard Frisby, Mary Elizabeth, Caroline Alice & Edward Thomas. Charles died in January 1882 & Ann died in August 1875, both in Ramsgate. Anyone want to share them with me ?!!
