Dear Sarah Further to your email this afternoon regarding the Emptage family, I wonder if you would be interested in joining our Mailing List for The Isle of Thanet Its a free online mailing list on rootsweb for the Isle of Thanet, which covers Margate. I can think of a lister who has Emptage in her tree, Andrea Currie, Paul Bishop's family of Bishops were neighbours to your Emptage's for a number of years in Byron Road and back in the late 1700's David Railton has a Humphrey Emptage marriage which may related to this little lot. I have forwarded this one email to the list so anyone interested can reply to you direct. Good luck with all Regards Suzannah Dear Sarah, Yes, Correct Church. I looked for Humphrey on the 1901 Census, attatched. (Reference) Class: RG13; Piece: 821; Folio: 37; Page: 11 He is living at 8 Byron Road Margate, a Mariner on the sea with his wife Sarah Ann. Cannot see where William Henry is, if he was a Mariner he may be at sea? I shall have an indepth look if you like? Did it give William's occupation on his 1903 marriage? Hello Fellow Members I - and others - have been searching for the baptism of my 3xGreat Grandfather, Oliver WANSTALL, but without success. In the 1841 Census for Birchington (3, Brunswick Place: HO107/465/7/24/10), and also in the 1851 Census (Birchington Street: HO 107/1629/58/8), he gave his place of birth as Hoath; his stated age indicated a birth year of around 1779. He was a cordwainer and married Sarah HOLNESS of Chislet at the Church of the Holy Cross, Hoath on 5 Nov 1803; he died on 13 Feb 1853 and was buried at Birchington on 18 Feb 1853. According to the gravestone he was then aged 72. His grandson, Francis James WANSTALL became a Blacksmith and married Bennett BETTSWORTH; they were my maternal grandmother's parents but, naturally, both died long before I was born in 1921. Of course, it is possible that he was given a different Christian name at Baptism but was thereafter known as Oliver (it has been known to happen!). Has anyone come across the baptism of this elusive ancestor? If anyone is interested in this particular family I should be very pleased to hear from you - apart, of course, from those with whom I am already in contact and who have been most helpful. Good luck Suzannah My name is Roy Harvey, I live in Australia, and am researching my Kentish family line. Hi I have asked before, but just would like to know in case anyone missed the message, if anyone has any old photographs of St Lawrence in the 30s especially Chapel Road, as my Great Grand father had a boot repairers there in the mid 30s - William John Penney. I have seen some old photos of St Lawrence before the road was widened and it looks totally different a lot more village like with narrow roads and lots of little shops and terraced houses. Thanks for your assistance. Lorna

Thank you, Suzannah; That certainly looks like them - I don't suppose there's any need to suppose a second marriage for James since his wife may have preferred her second forename. Bob

Elizabeth, I have Philpott's as well as Culmers so I would like a copy please Thanks, Barbara ----- Original Message ---- From: E. E. Clark <eec06031@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [Isle-of-Thanet] CULMER & PHILPOT For some reason that I have yet to figure out, I have a copy of a marriage register entry from St Peter's in Thanet, for Ann CULMER (widow) and Stephen PHILPOT, signed by John PIGOTT, vicar. The copy is dated 1808, but their marriage was in 1781. It was amongst my father's things, but I have no idea if it's anything to do with our family or just that he collected ephemera from Broadstairs and St Peter's. I have sent a scan to one person researching CULMER and if anyone else would like a copy, just let me know.
