Just an alert to anyone who has ancestors involved in fishing, or merchant shipping in the Thanet area. FindmyPast now have crew lists 1863-1913 online to search ( subscription or Pay per View.) I have just spent a happy half hour tracing the career of my ancestor Edwin ( sometimes Edward! ) JORDAN on his various fishing smacks from apprenticeship to master. Anne
He went by Homans, was told that was the name he picked to use by Aunt Ethel before she died. Holloway was a name that one of the men in the community said he could be. What other info do you have on this Holloway? John Charles died on March 26/ 1899 in his 80th year. I tried DNA testing on the Homans name, using my nephew who was son of my brother Ross Evans Spencer Homans Have not matched any Homans markers, not even one, however I matched 23 out of 25 for surname Ross. My brother that I just mentioned was given Ross as his first name. I will now try Holloway and see if I get any markers. Does anyone have BATHO? Would appreciate help to identify the parents of siblings Sarah, William and Mary BATHO - probably born about 1640/50s? Here is what I know. William BATHO's will of 1678 says he is a "maulster" of the parish of St John ye Baptist, Thanet & names: 1. his sister Sarah PEAKE now wife of Daniel PEAKE to get 5 pounds & released from debt of 40 shillings she owes him 2. brother-in-law William COPPIN to get 4 pounds 10s which her [sic] now owes me 3. loving wife Sarah BATHO (sole executrix) to get all the rest Witnesses John READE, Thomas BAKER, Joseph MACKRITH Will proved 1680 by widow Sara BATHO. Vicar General's Marriage License of 20 Feb 1677 William BATHO of 'St. Margaret in the Isle of Thanet', Kent, (maltster), b., 27, and Sarah BARKER of the same, wid., 30, in St. Mary at Hill, London. ie gives him a date of birth about 1650. Mary BARTHOE & William COPPIN married 1672 at St Geo, Canterbury ie Mary is the sister unnamed in William's will. Sarah BATHO (in IGI as BANTHO) married Daniel PEAKE in St Lawrence 10 Sept 1668 (no licence found). IGI (Batch 8501031) has a Sarah BATHO daughter of John and Sarah christened at St Mary, Minster on Thanet in 05 OCT1646 also John BATHO son of John & Sara christened 11 June 1643. Presumably children of Johannes BATHO & Sarah COFFAM married Nov 29, 1640 at Minster (IGI Batch 8581032) IGI (Batch 8501031) has a William BATHO christened 18 SEP 1650 at Minster but with father Benjamin BATHO. Were there really two BATHO men John & Benjamin both having children at same time? or is the Benjamin a misrecord or mistranscribe? If anyone has access to Minster records, I'd appreciate an assessment of what register actually says please & are there any burials/marriages for BATHO ? There is also marriage of John BATHO & Mary WELBY at Birchington 04 MAR 1651(IGI M016491) which might fit in somewhere. cheers Barbara Callcott The new Internet Explorer 8 optimised for Yahoo!7: Faster, Safer, Easier.
I was interested in this as she is my 2xgreat grandmother (although she was Ann without an 'e' I believe). I am wondering about 'The Era' - what type of publication was it? National/local? Daily/weekly/monthly? Etc? (Googling the name did not really help.) Plains of Waterloo so called in 1818 from the Battle of Waterloo. This and the adjoining area were extensively used as military training camps in the Napoleonic era, prior to the buildings of houses. There is such a mixture of buildings, some date to the 1790's and even the 1960's Is there any property you are interested in? Hello all, I haven't had much luck with this one so thought I would ask here. Has anyone got any connection with, or know anything about, Harriet REYNOLDS, born in Margate around 1813 from the censuses. Possibly earlier as the ages varied quite a bit! She married Thomas MILLER on 1-11-1834 at St.Peter, Broadstairs, according to the IGI where she is transcribed as REY. Their third child was given the middle name of ROLFE. Not sure what that tells me, Harriet's mother's maiden name maybe? Just thought I would enquire here in case someone on the list knows something. Thanks for your time, regards, Dave (Miller)
