Dear John, I have a William Richard Mortley, born about 1847 at Margate, who married an Agnes Ann Wren from a branch of my Sandwell family. At the 1881 census, William is a coastguard in Lincolnshire. Agnes and William had four children that I know of. I would be happy to exchange info if this family is of interest to you. Best wishes, John ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Wareham" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 08, 2009 5:45 AM Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] MORTLEY >I am seeking contact with anyone having the name MORTLEY in their family >tree. > I am attempting to piece together this family & no matter how small your > data, it would be appreciated. > John Wareham > Springfield, NSW, Australia > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi Sandra, I think you're referring to Michael's Bookshop - http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/ , which has a good selection of re-published books, directories etc on Thanet. There's a link on his main page to a list of what's available. There are cheaper copies available. If you go into www.abebooks.co.uk and search under the author and title, then sort the results by "lowest first", you will find there are copies of the original edition under 8 pounds in America and the cheapest of the reprint is under 14 pounds. There are about 6 pages with Thanet info on and I'd be happy to scan them. My copy came from the US and the name of the original owner is inside - a German name. I found the book as it was mentioned in The Third Kentish Patchwork by Robert Goodsall, when he was describing WW2 in Harrietsham, where he lived. I've just read a book called The Last Ditch by David Lampe, about the Resistance organisation which was set up in the UK in WW2 in case the Germans landed. There was some information about Thanet. The Resistance group leader for Thanet was Norman Steed, a farmer from Manston Grove. The group used existing tunnels in the chalk from smuggling days as hideouts. Another hideout was under a brickyard about a mile south-west of Margate. Most of the hideouts were destroyed at the end of the war. The other name mentioned in Thanet is a radio operator called Lamont. > > > > The book was originally published in 1968 and reprinted by Greenhill Press in 2007 and is a great read. > > > > Cheers, > > > > Margaret Lewington > > > > in Perth, Western Australia > > _________________________________________________________________ > POP access for Hotmail is here! Greetings I have two requests of the list: 1. Confirmation that Henry Belsey who married Ann Tucker in Minster on 10 Jan 1799 (LDS) are the parents of the following children christened at St.Mary's, Minster, Thanet. Twins Ann Belsey & Elizabeth Hazeldine Belsey - 27 Nov 1803 Sarah Fuller Belsey - 28th Jun 1807 Thomas Fuller Belsey - 10 May 1812 Edwin Tucker Belsey - 1818 2. Who were the parents of Henry Belsey b:1771 Eastry d: 1850 Eastry - I know Eastry is not on the Isle but someone may know. The dates/place may be off. But if the marriage is correct above maybe some ages may give a clue to the exactness of Henry's detail. Thanks in advance Daryl Rickards Warrawee NSW Australia

Hi Steve I read your offer re St Nicholas at Wade information and would appreciate some assistance with our Brett research. We have a Robert Brett marrying Mary Lindsay 21 Mar 1789 in Hoath. We believe he lived in Marsh Row in Chislet, in a cottage named the Swans Nest. He was a Looker/Ag. Lab. Robert and Mary had eight children, all of them were baptized at St. Nicholas church. After years spent searching for Robert's baptism we eventually found what we consider the likeliest, in Ash next Sandwich in Mar 1764, father William, mother Elizabeth nee Richardson. What I am requesting is if you could check for Brett baptisms before 1764 for me, we cannot find William's baptism. Do you recall anything about Bretts Row, Marsh Row of the Swans nest cottage? Thanks in anticipation, if I can help you with any research in the west country, let me know.
