    3. Thank you Brian, Even though I live in Australia, I did not know of this site. It has photos of Marysville, (that was burnt out in the recent fires) and they maybe of help to folk. Dear List, I pass on this website. It is WWW.pictureaustralia.org. You can just type in what you are interested in and any photos they have on that subject come up for you to view. Many from Thanet are settled in Australia. Distant relatives can easily view and get to know places that your kin may live in. Hope this helps. Brian Page from Mount Gambier, a proud Thanetian. PS what are people from Thanet callled? Thanetians? Thanets? ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

A car trip to Ramsgate to convey some goods to his daughters new home resulted in the appearance of a St Peter's Butcher at Ramsgate magistrates court on Monday on two summonses. Archibald George SPRINGETT of High Street St Peter's pleaded guilty to driving the car without a license and to the misuse of petrol. The facts of the case were outlined by Mr Eric Weale, prosecuting, who said P.C Close was on duty in Paragon Street from 7.30 to 10.35pm. The following day he interviewed defendant and asked him for what purpose petrol coupons were issued to him. He said they were issued to him in connection with his business as a butcher and for collecting swill. His daughter had just moved from Broadstairs to Ramsgate and he used the car to take a few articles of furniture to her. P.C Close found that defendants driving license had expired in October last. SPRINGETT told the magistrates he did not agree that he told the police officer he used the car for removing furniture. He brought a few boxes to Ramsgate and they contained a few articles which they did not wish to trust them to the removers. Adding that he was allowed three gallons of petrol a week for his business, defendant expressed his sorrow for the offence. The magistrates fined him 10s, for driving without a license and ?1 for the misuse of petrol and he was ordered to pay ?1. 6s costs. The case against Mrs Jessie SPRINGETT who was summoned for allowing the misuse of the petrol was adjourned till Friday. ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 6 Jul 2009 18:08:59 +0000 (GMT) From: Suzannah Foad <[email protected]> Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] Corporal Arthur HASSALL and his two 'wives' Ramsgate 1918 To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 SOLDIERS TWO WIVES Extraordinary Ramsgate Story 24th April 1918 East Kent Times A story of a most unusual character was unfolded at Ramsgate Police Court before the County Justices on Tuesday, relative to an alleged bigamous marriage by a soldier. The accused was Corporal Arthur HASSALL, of the Royal Engineers, and he appeared on remand from last week charged with having married Alice Violet Beatrice JACOBS at Sandwich on November 12th last year, his with Edith, then being alive. HASSALL wore the Mons medal ribbon with two gold stripes. At the first hearing, evidence in regard to apprehension was given by Detective Constable Jenner of Sandwich. On Tuesday, the accused legal wife, who lives at Mossend Lanarkshire Scotland was called to give evidence by the police. She became acquainted with HASSALL she said, in February 1915 and corresponded with him until May 1916 when he returned from France. He visited her after that, every fortnight, but in consequence of what she discovered in June of the same year, relative to her condition he married her, the ceremony taking place on July 29th. She produced the certificate relative to the marriage. On November 25th 1916 she became the mother of twins which, however, lived only a short time. Questioned by Mr J H Robinson, who appeared for the accused, Mrs HASSALL said the birth of the children was premature. She denied that in one of her letter to her husband, while he had been stationed in Thanet, that she said she wished she had the 'other chap'. Neither did she tell him that she did not wish to see him again. It was not through her action that the law had been put into motion in regard to the second marriage. In reply to Inspector Ford, witness denied that at the birth of the children, accused disowned them. She affirmed that he was the father. The second 'wife' deposed that she made HASSALL's acquaintance in August last year., when he represented himself to be a single man. She kept company with him and in October intimated that she expected a certain event in June of this year. As a consequence they were married on November 20th (sic). Witness produced the certificate relevant to the wedding. In reply to Mr Robinson, witness made the surprising statement that when she told accused of the pending event in October, he told her he was already married but that she, however, decided to marry him and so avert the disgrace which was likely to ensue. She added that she did not know whether it would be a legal marriage or not. HASSALL had been very good to her and she desired to 'stick' to him whatever happened. Answering Inspector Ford, witness said she did not tell Detective Constable Jenner at the time he took her statement that she knew accused was married. She believed he asked her at the time but she made no answer. That day was the first time she had told anybody that HASSALL told her he was married before his marriage with her. Proof of the marriage was given by C.S.M. Sulley, R.E. who stated that he was present at the ceremony. On the advice of his solicitor, prisoner reserved his defence and he was committed to take his trial at the next assizes. His application to the magistrate's to certify for legal aid under the poor prisoners regulations, was not agreed to. ? Births Sep 1898?? I've just read a book called The Last Ditch by David Lampe, about the Resistance organisation which was set up in the UK in WW2 in case the Germans landed. There was some information about Thanet. The Resistance group leader for Thanet was Norman Steed, a farmer from Manston Grove. The group used existing tunnels in the chalk from smuggling days as hideouts. Another hideout was under a brickyard about a mile south-west of Margate. Most of the hideouts were destroyed at the end of the war. The other name mentioned in Thanet is a radio operator called Lamont. > > > > The book was originally published in 1968 and reprinted by Greenhill Press in 2007 and is a great read. > > > > Cheers, > > > > Margaret Lewington > > > > in Perth, Western Australia > > _________________________________________________________________ > POP access for Hotmail is here! 3. Thank you very much for the detail. I have managed to order the book into my local library Appreciate you letting me know, Many Thanks Suzannah ----- Original Message ---- From: Margaret Lewington <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, 10 June, 2009 2:21:53 AM Subject: Re: [Isle-of-Thanet] WW2 resistance There are cheaper copies available. If you go into www.abebooks.co.uk and search under the author and title, then sort the results by "lowest first", you will find there are copies of the original edition under 8 pounds in America and the cheapest of the reprint is under 14 pounds. There are about 6 pages with Thanet info on and I'd be happy to scan them. My copy came from the US and the name of the original owner is inside - a German name. I found the book as it was mentioned in The Third Kentish Patchwork by Robert Goodsall, when he was describing WW2 in Harrietsham, where he lived.
