Hi Kate About the other bit of your question, yes the actual registers that survive for Ebeneezer Ramsgate are at PRO at Kew, England & are what are digitised. Film copies of them are available from LDS Family History Centres - I don't know cost in New Zealand but in Australia its $5. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=34253&disp=Baptisms+and+burials%2C+1695-1837++ will show you film numbers ie either FHL 597066 Items 1-5 or FHL 1482365 Items 4-7 should do. There is a Family History Centre in Wellington according to http://www.thecommunityarchive.org.nz/node/78059 Someone there would explian how to order the films then you can see the records yourself and is far more cost effective than internet images when you have several persons in the same set of records. Someone there might also be able to help with some of your Batch number questions. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=411973&subject_disp=England%2C+Kent%2C+Ramsgate+-+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 gives the list of records catalogued under Ramsgate. You would also be able to order the St Lawrence parish ie anglican records there on film. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=535987&subject_disp=England%2C+Kent%2C+St.+Lawrence+-+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 Certainly before 1837 marriages were only allowed in Anglican church. Many of my family who are recorded as baptisms in Ebeneezer are recorded as marriages & burials in St Lawrence (anglican) registers or the adjoining parish of St Peters (anglican) registers. all the best Barbara Callcott ________________________________ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 2009 09:39:52 +1200 (New Zealand Standard Time) From: "Kate Cunningham" <[email protected]> Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] LDS member submitted information and Life Boats and Ebenezer Independant Ramsgate 3. Each IGI record usually has a Batch Number which can help diagnose the likely source of information. Click on the Batch Number and then click search without putting in any names and you will see the contents of the Batch. This will give you a pretty good idea. Some Batches are essentially a partial extract from a register others are more quirky - e.g. some may come from a family bible or similar family notebook which was never a public record. There was a discussion of Batch numbers earlier on this list which you might find useful. If there is no Batch number then you can usually still order in a Film of the original submission at your local Family History Centre but it may be nothing more than is on the screen unless the screen says otherwise is unlikely to give the name of the submitter. Batch C068532 for the Ebeneezer Independent at Ramsgate is quite a reliable transcription. The original registers sometimes contain quite a bit more info tho.. Often in [the filme of] original register it will say something like "privately" & occasionally gives name of a grandparent. Also register usually gives parents place eg "of Broadstairs". Ebeneezer Independent Ramsgate Registers can be search online as they are part of PRO's program to digitise Non=conformist registers. Background info at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/bmd/step1a.htm Free to do simple search at http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/ RG4 1175 is the Ramsgate Independent Batch on the bmd registers site so you can cross reference this with IGI. I was searching the IGI for various branches of the families who married into my Thanet Wellard's and came across a lot of LDS member submitted entries for christenings and marriages (yes, I do know to take this information very carefully). Scattered amongst these entries were some actual extracted entries which did help to tie in some of the member submitted ones. Does anyone know where THEY got their information from? Did they take it from original registers? ____________________________________________________________________________________ Access Yahoo!7 Mail on your mobile. Anytime. Anywhere. Further research from Kelly's 1913 directory shows him to be a missioner at the Sailors Harbour Mission, Military Road. Hi Suzannah My grandfather Charles Edward Knight was in the crew of the Ramsgate Lifeboat when attending the wreck of the Beacon Light 30/31 January 1895. Are you able to trace trace a local newspaper report of this event which I believe was carried out in atrocious conditions . I would appreciate confirmation of this incident. I have been to understand that the lifeboat was holed and had to be towed into Dover and some of the crew were frozen to their seats. Don Knight
Hi Don Sadly, with not having access to Margate Museum where I was able to look these things up on a regular basis, I have had to calm down on offering these look ups. I still of course use Margate Library for my own research but not been in there this month as I am working on something related to my own tree out of Thanet. I will jot in into my notebook but cannot tell you when I shall be able to pop into the Library. Sorry I cannot help as of yet! Kindest Regards Suzannah ----- Original Message ---- From: D Knight <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, 8 July, 2009 6:09:46 PM Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] SS Beacon Light Hi Suzannah My grandfather Charles Edward Knight was in the crew of the Ramsgate Lifeboat when attending the wreck of the Beacon Light 30/31 January 1895. Are you able to trace trace a local newspaper report of this event which I believe was carried out in atrocious conditions . I would appreciate confirmation of this incident. I have been to understand that the lifeboat was holed and had to be towed into Dover and some of the crew were frozen to their seats. It is www.pictureaustralia.org. You can just type in what you are interested in and any photos they have on that subject come up for you to view. Many from Thanet are settled in Australia. Distant relatives can easily view and get to know places that your kin may live in. Hope this helps. Brian Page from Mount Gambier, a proud Thanetian. PS what are people from Thanet callled? Thanetians?
