    1. [Isle-of-Thanet] Death of train driver BURLINSON ( 1877 )
    2. >From Birmingham Daily Post, Saturday, February 3, 1877; Issue 5794 The driver of the down goods train from London to Ramsgate, named BURLIN(G)SON, lost his life at Birchingford ( probably meant to be Birchington) Station, on Thursday. He attempted to alight before stopping the train, and fell between the tender and a truck, being killed in an instant. NOT connected to our research, but this is probably his death reference from FreeBMD. Death : John BURLINSON aged 28 Thanet 2a 518 March Qtr. 1877.

    3. Hi Elaine As its not in Thanet as such I have limited knowledge of Reculver. I am sending you an ordnance survey map 1819-1820 which shows Bishopstone Farm. Then have a look at Google Earth or another satellite website so you can work out the area today. Just a quick look shows that there is no longer a farm, possibly due to the encroachment by the sea but the trackways are quite similar. Good luck Suzannah ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, 18 July, 2009 12:16:22 AM Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] John Young and George Young at Reculver Hi, I am working on some on my Young family. 3. Thank you Barbara and Richard for your very helpful information. I actually have a subscription to "The Genealogist" web site and hadn't got around to searching their 'Non Conformist' records, so was able to view the 3 entries...and they did have private baptisms....interesting to view the actual register. If anyone on list would like me to check this record source for their ancestors let me know and I'll see what I can find. But be quick as I only have about another month to go on my subscription....can't afford another year at this time. There are also general Parish Registers available but again seem quite patchy....happy to check these as well. And by the way Richard....I'm researching Tomson (various spellings) Wellard Fox, Peake/Peeke and Spencer....my hubby would be very upset to hear that his family is now residing in Thanet when they are all Irish :) Cheers, Kate Cunningham Wellington NZ

    3. According to 'The Story of the Ramsgate Lifeboat' written by Jeff Morris - " For some years before the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824, there were a number of privately run lifeboats in service around the coast of Great Britian, the first boat to be built specifically for use as a lifeboat being the aptly named 'Original', built in 1789 by Henry Greathead, of South Shields.  In 1802, the Trustees of the Royal Harbour at Ramsgate , putchased one of Greathead's lifeboats, this boat probably being 31ft x 10ft 6ins., but unfortunately, no details have been found of any services by her and she was removed before 1824". I hope this little exerpt may be of some interest.  This little booklet was produced in 1994 but I do believe that a more up to date version would be sold at Ramsgate lifeboat station.  As RNLI have a website, just google that, then there are links to all stations in Great Britian.  Usually there is a history link where you can find out more, or an archivist that holds the records for  each station.   Hope this is helpful Maureen Sharpe (Bradford, West Yorkshire, born in Ramsgate) ________________________________ From: Kate Cunningham <[email protected]> To: Thanet List <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, 11 July, 2009 10:39:52 PM Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] LDS member submitted information and Life Boats and Ebenezer Independant Ramsgate Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone knows the answer to these three questions? 1. I was searching the IGI for various branches of the families who married into my Thanet Wellard's and came across a lot of LDS member submitted entries for christenings and marriages (yes, I do know to take this information very carefully). Scattered amongst these entries were some actual extracted entries which did help to tie in some of the member submitted ones. Does anyone know where THEY got their information from? Did they take it from original registers? 2. Does anyone know when the Life Boat service started in Thanet? This is just a long shot but I'm unable to find a christening for a William Wellard in Thanet in approx 1684 and had the thought that he may have been born elsewhere in the County and moved to Thanet to either work the Life Boat or something else in the nautical trade. 3. Would there be any original registers available for the Ebenezer Independant at Ramsgate? I have 3 of my Tompson line being christened here. Lewes (Lewis) 1713 George 1711 Mary 1709 I'm currently interested in the following Thanet families:- Wellard - anywhere in Thanet Fox - St Lawrence Tomson/Thomson/Thompson/Tompson (and other spellings) - Ramsgate Spencer - St Lawrence Cheers, Kate Cunningham Wellington NZ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hello Kate, sorry I cannot help with your Cunninghams directly but I too am interested in the Independent religious institutions in Ramsgate. I am going to check my files but we got some looked up and a possible relative married at Ebenezer c 1840, but the records for Ebenezer were patchy and for others non-existant. Two thing occurred to me about sources. First, if the chapel or circuit records were poor, perhaps someone (LDS?) did a paid general.search at the registry ie the local registrar of BMDs. This is not comonly done and but was recently shown on an edition of 'Heir Hunters' on BBC1. That way they might pick up on all the Independent BMDs registered after 1837. It does seem to be a good way of getting lots of info within a registry catchment area but it seems to be charged by ones time in the registry so may be rather stressful. .So perhaps the key starter question is what were the dates of the entries you found? Second, is it possible that a register is in private hands? I recently found someone with a Cof E private register kept because their remote chapelries near Gloucester kept switching between 2 or 3 main parishes. Incidentally, I believe that Kent Registry Service has an online marriage index but only a few births and deaths indexed. A few months back I asked Kent registry service if the file prefix letter on the marriage index corresponded to the place eg C for Canterbury and they said no....... Perhaps someone knows how to read the file refs to narrow the search field.??
