I was intrigued by an item on a recent TV programme showing the C14th Gough map of Kent. The American presenter explained that the map showed Thanet as a genuine island with a navigable channel south to the channel. Does anyone know more? What would this have ben loke in Roman or Norman times? Richard Fowler KFHS 9342
EXCITING RESCUE AT BROADSTAIRS Boy falls in Harbour Isle of Thanet Gazette 26th April 1930 A gallant act was witnessed by many residents and visitors on Broadstairs Pier on Tuesday afternoon, when a well known local swimmer rescued a child from drowning. The child, Albert MILLER aged 8, son of Mr Joe MILLER a local boatman, was fishing from the slipway on the east side of the pier when he slipped and fell into the sea. The water was six or eight feet deep at the time. Fortunately Mr Heriot ATKIN, of Wildcroft, Queens Avenue Broadstairs, was returning to the harbour in his sailing boat Jessie, and he noticed the boy's plight. When he had come within a few yards of the boy, Mr ATKIN dived overboard, fully clothed and rescued him in the nick of time. The boy had gone under twice. Mr ATKIN was cheered by the watchers as he brought the boy to safety. After he had recovered from the shock of the immersion, the child was taken home. Margate Local & Family History

REMARKABLE LONGEVITY IN A FAMILY Keble's Gazette 15th July 1893 At the burial of Mrs Martha Solly EDWARDS, who died on July 5th at the advanced age of 90 years - in the Zion Chapel Cemetery on Wednesday, a curious instance of longevity in a family was brought to notice. The head stone of the grave in which the remains were interred bore three inscriptions. The first was that recording the death on May 2nd 1868 of Elizabeth GARDENER, mother of Mrs EDWARDS at the age of 95. The next was that of her daughter, Sophia DALE, who died on September 15th 1875 aged 82 years and the other that of the husband of the last named, Edward Chapman DALE, who was 87 at the time of his death on March 3rd 1886. Thus the united ages of the mother and two daughters amounted to no less than 267 years and if the age of Mrs DALE's husband was added, the total span of life in the family circle of four was 354 years. Didn't know about the wills. Nor the date of my grandfathers death. My main frustration with him is he was born in Ireland and I don't know where and seem to get blocked each time I look. It's surprising how small amounts of details about people build up. Thank you again. regards Rosemary

Thank you for that amazing amount of info. I've got my grandmother, Ada Annie Harlow on the 1881 census but not any of the other stuff. The William Baker Harlow record is useful because there seemed to be some difficulty about tracing him by the Harlow name group. This is exciting. Regards Rosemary
