    2. Hi Chris, Did you realise that your James Wood was married twice & had at least 10 children ? Maybe a tragedy to one of the children caused him to "flip" !! We haven't discovered the maiden name of his first wife, Mary Anne, as we haven't found a marriage, but she appears to have died soon after the 1871 census, aged 37. ( St. Saviour Reg District June Qtr 1871 1d 92 ) At that time they had 6 children. James was at that time a Clerk to a Government Contractor. James married Georgina GODDARD ( daughter of William Goddard & Elizabeth, according to Batch No. C001453 on IGI ) They married at St. Saviour Reg. District 1d 283 Sept Qtr 1874. Maybe Georgina was hired by him to look after the children, & he later married her & had more children. Their daughter Georgina Mildred Wood born on 27th March 1879 was not Baptised until 25th July 1904. She was an Elementary School Teacher. Her parents were shown as James & Georgina, James was NOT shown as Deceased on her Baptism record. Also Frederick Walter was Baptised as an Adult on 25th Nov. 1894. As with Georgina, James is NOT shown as Deceased. Please don't think we are disputing James's death. Georgina Wood, senior, is clearly shown as Widowed on 1901 census, as you no doubt know. The family continued to live at 15, Finchley Rd. where he lived with Mary Anne, in 1871. All the Best with your Research, Mick & Norma Coomber

    3. Hi Chris, If the Oriele was the passenger paddle steamer then she was owned by the General Steam Navigation Company, the manuscripts for this company are held at the National Maritime Museum, if you google in General Steam Navigation Company there is quite of lot of info that may be helpful to you. Regards Joan. -----Original Message----- From: isle-of-thanet-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:isle-of-thanet-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Chris Woods Sent: 19 October 2010 07:53 To: ISLE-OF-THANET@rootsweb.com Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] Death on the p.s. ORIELE 1891 Hallo, My first visit to your forum - I am not certain whether Ramsgate comes within your remit and apologies if it does not. I recently found a Will of one of my maternal gt. grandfathers who 'drowned at sea' in 1891 I then bought his death certificate that shows his body was found 'on the High Seas off Ramsgate' and that an inquiry had been held. I contacted kent-eng@rootsweb.com and was advised to contacted Ramsgate Library and I was kindly sent a copy of the report of this inquiry in the Kent Coast Times of 30th. July 1891. Cutting this to the minimum, it appears that this Londoner used to visit a lodging house in Ramsgate ... presumably for the family summer holiday. On this occassion he was last seen by his wife when he left their home in Newington . 9th.July. It would appear that he visited the lodging house keeper who last saw him on the evening of the 10th., giving him his watch etc. to hold ..... James sent his wife a post card at about 7.20 that evening, which she received about 10 that evening (!), saying that he had left his watch etc with the lodging house keeper. 11th. July he boarded the paddle steamer ORIEOLE (official number 95435) at Ramsgate, and shortly after was lost overboard. His body was found 8 miles off North Foreland on 23rd. July and an inquiry was held on the 25th. Although there were strong hints that he may have committed suicide, the jury returned a verdict of 'Found Drowned' which is not very satisfactory. The paddle steamer ORIOLE ran between London Bridge, Ramsgate and Great Yarmouth, calling in at Harwich. (She later ran to Margate). I have checked with the MUN archives in Newfoundland which holds most of the 'Bristish Registrar of Ships and Seamen' records, and they have the original crew list for the ORIOLE for 1891, but not the log books. It is very unlikely that a coastal ferry would have kept passenger lists at that time and so I will gain nothing from those records. I would assume that he and his family took the ORIOLE from London to Ramsgate as part of their holiday in Ramsgate. On this occassion, it would be interesting to know whether he joined the ship at Ramsgate on her return journey from Gt. Yarmouth to London, or on an outward journey from Ramsgate to Gt. Yarmouth. If the latter, this might indicate that he had intended to jump overboard and that the direction of the ship was irrelevent. If the ship was bound for London, his going overboard may have been accidental. I wonder therefore if anyone might know where I might find a copy of the ORIOLE's schedule for July 1891. She was built for and at that time owned by the General Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. Ltd. 3. Hallo, My first visit to your forum - I am not certain whether Ramsgate comes within your remit and apologies if it does not. I recently found a Will of one of my maternal gt. grandfathers who 'drowned at sea' in 1891 I then bought his death certificate that shows his body was found 'on the High Seas off Ramsgate' and that an inquiry had been held. 3. Thanks, Suzannah for that newspaper clipping. George Stupples is in my family tree and this adds extra information about him. George married Rosetta Sayer at St John's Margate in 1888. The 3 children mentioned were Alice Elizabeth born 1890, Anne born 1893 and Edward born 1897. I know that Alice was born at Dent de Lion Farm, Garlinge. Rosetta was a sister of my great grandmother, Emily Pamela Sayer, and daughter of James Sayer and Emma Ann Solley. 1. [Isle-of-Thanet] Thanet Map
    2. Suzannah Foad
    3. Hi Richard   I know of one in the 15th Century. In the History of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, written about AD 1414 by Thomas of Elham, who is described as 'formerly monk and treasurer of that foundation', appears one of the earliest attempts at map making performed by an Englishman, and its of the Isle of Thanet!   The original drawing is in a manuscript belonging to Trinity College Cambridge and it's reproduced by Lewis in his 'History of Thanet' 1723 and by J Harris in his 'History of Kent' 1719, who followed the copy made by Lewis. Both these copies are good but  contain inaccuracies. I can send you this but have also attached another two maps for you showing the Wantsum Channel in Roman times and what it is today.   I feel this map was not made with the intention to show the island but how the 'Stag's course' divided the estates of St Augustine from those of Canterbury Cathedral, as very few place names, apart from those on the 'course' are given.   The map is actually in colour, with the thirteen churches being named in brown ink. The writer explaining his map states that the lines in red show the King's Highways in the island leading from one parish to another. Only one road is named, that of Dunstreete running from Sarre to St Laurence Church Ramsgate, but all of them exist even to this day. Margate Local & Family History   From: "Richard Fowler" < DisplayMail('onetel.com','dfowler1'); dfowler1@onetel.com> Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] Gough Map C14th Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010 07:58:40 +0100 I was intrigued by an item on a recent TV programme showing the C14th Gough map of Kent. The American presenter explained that the map showed Thanet as a genuine island with a navigable channel south to the channel. Does anyone know more? What would this have ben loke in Roman or Norman times? Richard Fowler KFHS 9342

    3. Indeed it was a 'proper' island in Roman and Norman times. See http://tinyurl.com/595rwq It tells you the Wantsum Channel which separated the island from the rest of Kent was originally 2 miles wide but silted up over the last 1000 years - but was still low enough to be filled by floods in 1953. There is a link from the page to an examination of the name 'Thanet' - which could mean Beacon Isle - or Isle of Death!
