Isbell +Elizabeth McWhorter David McWhorter Isbell 1930-2016 David McWhorter IsbellLongtime Dentist In Chattanooga Was Navy VeteranTuesday, April 5, 2016 David Isbell David McWhorter Isbell, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, died on April 4, 2016. Born in Chattanooga on Jan. 1, 1930, he was the son of the late Dr. D and Elizabeth McWhorter Isbell. Following graduation from The McCallie School, Dr. Isbell received his pre-dental education from Vanderbilt University and his doctorate from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry where he was a member of Psi Omega Fraternity and elected to membership in the honorary Richard Doggett Dean Odontological Society. Dr. Isbell served in the Dental Corp of the U.S. Navy and in the Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. During his 40 years of practice, he served as president of the Third District Dental Society, vice president of the Tennessee State Dental Society and was awarded the Tennessee Dental Association Fellowship Award for outstanding service to his profession and community. He was instrumental in establishing the Siskin Memorial Foundation Dental Clinic for children, where he served as a staff volunteer for 35 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry, a member in the Southern Academy of Periodontology, the East Tennessee Academy of Dental Practice Management and the Chattanooga Dental Study Group. He served as a director of the Tennessee — Georgia Health Commission and a dental consultant for Provident Life Insurance Co. A member of the Chattanooga Rotary Club and the Orange Grove School Board, David was a very active member of First Centenary United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School, tutored in the Inner City Ministry, served on the Administrative Board and was a member of the Baker Newman Murdoch Sunday School Class. He enjoyed participating in food delivery to HaCoBa Food Bank each week. He is survived by Jane Dickert Isbell, his wife of 63 years; his daughters, Susan Elizabeth Isbell of Atlanta; Deanne Isbell Mott and her husband Dan of Raleigh, NC; his sisters, Betty Isbell Spencer and Mary (Bootsie) Isbell Rusher; sister-in-law Nancy Dickert Martin; and nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at First Centenary United Methodist Church with Dr. Doug Fairbanks and Dr. David Harr officiating. The family invites friends to share in a visitation immediately following the service in the Mohney Hall.
