The distillery/mill in this article was built in 1848 by Thomas Daniel Isbell and his son John, and was later owned by John's son George. Thomas Daniel Isbell was born 27 Oct 1792 in Halifax Co., Virginia, and died 8 Aug 1855 in Newton County, Missouri. http://www.neoshodailynews.com/articles/2005/07/19/news/news14.txt
Does anyone on this list know anything about Peter Isbell that lived in Halifax County, NC? He disappeared off the Federal Census about 1810 - 1820. I have a gggreat grandfather, James C. Isbell that was born 1801 in North Carolina. His first son's name was Peter. His wife's name was Elizabeth Smith Isbell and she was born in S.C. On a Confederate record for John C. Isbell, son of James C. Isbell, it states that his father was born in Halifax County, N.C. This family lived in Rankin, Simpson, Covington, and Jasper Counties of MS. Thank you Cyndi
A few weeks ago everybody was talking about this 14-year-old boy who took the airplane for a joyride. None of the newspapers that I saw mentioned the name of the airfield where this happened, however. Isbell Field in Ft. Payne, Alabama, was named for Col. John Birdwell Isbell, my great-great-uncle. http://www.aopa.org/prez/prespos/2005/pp0508.html

So sorry for Sharon. About the book "American of Gentle Birth and Their Ancestors" wonder if the Isbells who married into the Tucker-Hall family are listed. Thanks. Mary Lou in Indiana
I received sad news last week from Sharon (Shane) Oxley. She was moving a couple of weeks ago and one of the moving moving vans caught on fire and burned up, a total loss apparently. The insurance woudln't let them go through it, but she said it melted the sides of the van and the back door of the van. That was the moving van with all her genealogy, many years of research and family papers, including her great-great-grandfather's bible. Shane is descended from Benjamin Isbell and Lettice (Hickman) Isbell of Virginia. Benjamin was the son of William Isbell (born circa 1688-98) and wife Rosamund. They are in the book "Americans of Gentle Birth and Their Ancestors" (1903, 1907) by Hannah D. Pittman.
I don't have this book, but maybe one of these Isbell bastards is who somebody else is looking for. http://www.mountainpress.com/books/nc/details/nc-0144w.html NORTH CAROLINA BASTARDY BONDS by Betty & Edwin Camin, 252 pages, $35. Example Mother: Malinda JOHNSTON, Jan 1832, Bondsman: William CHILDRESS, John N. FULLER, Solomon WHITLOW The "Bastardy Bonds" of North Carolina contains bonds posted because of the birth or impending birth of a bastard child. These bonds were intended to protect the county or parish from the expense of raising the child. When the pregnancy of a woman or birth of a child was brought to the attention of the court, a warrant was issued and the woman brought into Court. She was examined under oath and asked to declare the name of the child's father. The 'reputed' father was then served a warrant and required to post bond. If the woman refused to name the father, she, her father or some other interested party would post the bond. In some cases, the mother and reputed father together posted the bond. If the woman refused to post bond or declare the father, she was often sent to jail. The records are indexed by county and complimented by a full-name index at the back of book for easy references. The following North Carolina counties are included in this hefty publciation: Alamance, Alexander, Alleghany, Anson, Ashe, Bertie, Brunswick, Buncomb, Burke, Bute, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Camden, Carteret, Caswell, Catawba, Chatham, Cherokee, Chowan, Clay, Cleveland, Craven, Cumberland, Granville, Moore, New Hanover, Rowan, Rutherford, Surry, and Wake. Pate. She married George Stark Gaines, grandson of George Strother Gaines. Other than the single mention, I do not see any other information on Mary Pillans or the Isbells. Daisy Torrey Pillans was a granddaughter of Elizabeth Isbell Henshaw, and Daisy's stepmother Mary was also her aunt: Mary Anderson (Isbell) Henshaw Torrey. Descendants of John Lewis Isbell, son of George Isbell, son of William Isbell & Ann (Dillard) of Goochland, Virginia.

Does anybody know the parents, grandparents/lineage of Jason Isbell, 24, Lauderdale Co., Alabama, guitarist/vocalist/composer of the band "Drive-by Truckers"? He was born at Green Hill, Lauderdale County, a few miles north of Florence, near the Tennessee state line. http://mountainx.com/ae/2003/1008driveby.php http://www.jukeboxalive.com/cgibin/artists/profile.pl?username=drivebytruckers http://www.drivebytruckers.com/writeup_tds.html http://www.concertshots.com/DriveByTruckers-MotherJackson%20Athens22804.htm http://www.fayettevillenc.com/printer.php?Story=6501797 http://www.gooddog-music.com/Drive-By-Truckers_introa.htm http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-long082003.asp The last link mentions a family feud and reminds me of an article in the Birmingham News about the 1970s entitled, "A WALKER COUNTY WEEKEND," about an Isbell family hillbilly-type feud near Double Springs that lasted up into the late 1970s. I never knew who those Isbells were.

Thanks to those who responded to my query about Levi Isbell and Sarah Birdwell. It appears that this is not my line, unless the connection is further back than any of us have information. Margaret
I'm also interested in Levi Isbell & Sarah Birdwell. Are these descendants of Zachariah who married Elizabeth Calloway - if so this would also be my line. Marti martiroe@pacbell.net researching: Williams, Pope, Crudup, Thomas, Berry, Kyle, Isbell, Davis (all southern states)
Is Levi the one who is Lawson's brother? cousin? Jane Mitakides
Ray, when and where were Levi Isbell and Sarah Birdwell?
Odessa Morrow Isbell informs me that she still has copies of her book available for purchase. They are $100.00 each, which includes postage. It's just the descendants of Levi Isbell (1797-1868) and wife Sarah Birdwell, but also includes some information on his siblings. And it doesn't follow all of Levi's descendants, either, just some of them, but still contains interesting information. Those interested should send a check to Mrs. Odessa Morrow Isbell 965 Morrow Rd. Valley View, TX 76272 _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement?
