    3. "Decoration Day" by Jason Isbell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HX6PnE8iOg Is this an Isbell family feud? http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-long082003.asp Isbell recalls the true story of an age-old family feud with a man named Holland Hill. The narrator has seen his father shot dead; his life is driven by conflict, regret and self-hatred: I never knew how it all got started, / a problem with Holland before we were born / and I don't know the name of the boy we tied down / and beat till he just couldn't walk anymore. / But I know the caliber in daddy's chest / and I know what Holland Hill drives. / The state let him go, but I guess it was best / cause nobody needs all us Lawsons alive. http://www.drivebytruckers.com/writeup_dd.html Decoration Day Jason: This was the first song I wrote after joining the band, and it uses a fictional protagonist to tell a story that's rumored to be true. If a fight goes on long enough, it can be impossible to remember who started it.

    1. ISBELL DNA TEST
    2. Ray Isbell
    3. The Isbell DNA test may help sort out the Isbells of Virginia and the South, where so many records were destroyed, but on the larger scale it may show the distance between their relationship to Robert Isbell, immigrant to Salem, and to the later Isbell immigrants to New York. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=K48506&special=true Several results are in, and others still outstanding. At least two descendants of Levi Isbell (1797-1876) have samples still being tested, the 59-marker tests. We need a descendant of Benjamin Isbell and Lettice (Hickman) to take the test, as well as a descendant of James Isbell and Frances Tompkins Livingston. It would also be good if some descendants of Pendleton and Godfrey Isbell stepped forward and took the plunge.

    1. James Isbell of Talladega
    2. Ray Isbell
    3. This regards a former slave of Maj. James R. Isbell (1806-1871) of Talladega, Alabama, son of Thomas & Discretion (Howard) Isbell. He was a second cousin once removed of Mary Anderson (Isbell) Henshaw Torrey of Claiborne and Mobile, as well as her 1st husband (who was her 1st cousin) Andrew Isbell Henshaw and his sister Elizabeth (Henshaw) Torrey. Elizabeth (Henshaw) Torrey was the mother of Elizabeth Henshaw "Daisy" (Torrey) Pillans, wife of Mobile mayor Harry Pillans. Mary A. (Isbell) Henshaw Torrey's daughter Mary Montague (Henshaw) Toulmin was the wife of Col. Harry Theophilus Toulmin, federal judge at Mobile. Mobile, Alabama Register, Fri., Nov. 4, 1904: Montgomery, Ala. ... The servant problem is one of the most serious that is now before the ladies of this city to solve. Cooks are very scarce and a good many of the best families in Montgomery are doing their own cooking. Cooks that have been in the employ of families for years, have deserted their post. ... Many of the families here are having their meals sent to them from hotels." "Faithfulness shall meet its reward. Never was this so beautifully exemplified than in the death of 'Mammy' Eliza Wyatt, who died Wednesday afternoon ... at the residence of Dr. Alfred G. Ward, No. 52 North Broad street. Eliza Wyatt was born at Talladega, Ala., in the year 1842, she and her mother being owned in the Isabel family, who were well known before the war. Mr. Isabel (sic), her owner, was a rich banker at Talladega." In 1873 she went to work for the family of John W. Miller of Mobile, and was with them afterward, except for six years when she worked for Dr. George A. Ketchum. Compiled by Cammie East Cowan from issues of the Mobile Register (Mobile Register, Nov 4, 2004, p. A-2) For Dr. Ketchum, see also http://www.theharbinger.org/then_now/tn970408.html

Letter, 29 June [1862?], written by Robert B. Isbell (1836-1921) while stationed in Mechanicsville, Virginia with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, to his sister Georgianna Isbell (1833-1908) of Appomattox County. He writes about his orders to accompany captured prisoners to Richmond, as well as troop movements and the success of his unit in various skirmishes. Purchased. (40161) Robert B. and Georgianna were children of Robert Florentine Isbell, son of Zachariah F. Isbell, son of William and Ann (Dillard) Isbell. Several years ago I saw where a collection of his Civil War letters were advertised for sale. The collection was sold before I was able to purchase it, and the dealers would not reveal the identity of the purchaser(s). In a file somewhere I have a description of the letters in the collection from the sales catalog, but I wonder if the letter above was one of those.
