Dear HLM1934 and List, My Isbills are still on paper and without looking, I can still say I descend from John Miller Isbell, Zachariah and the line goes to Pendelton and Mary Isbell that lived in Monroe County, TN, buried at Big Creek. Been busy with another line and haven't looked at my Isbells for some time. But I am always listening on the list. All the Isbills Ive ever noticed before were in America, usually descendants of John Miller Isbell (b. 1777), but lately Ive read online of several Isbills in the news in England. I wonder if they descend from him or if the name evolved independently to Isbill in England, too. I wonder which is rarer in England, Isbills or UFOs. http://www.lynnnews.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=991&ArticleID=2027409 The Lynn News (King's Lynn, Norfolk, England, UK) Feb 8, 2007 Owner (of Riverside Restaurant on King Street in King's Lynn) Miss Pat Isbill said (of the UFOs): "They were called glow lanterns and worked on the same principle as a hot air balloon. I had never seen them before. They were quite large at least two foot tall and they were very effective. "We had police permission to set them off, so we didn't cause any full-scale emergencies!" _________________________________________________________________ Talk now to your Hotmail contacts with Windows Live Messenger. http://get.live.com/messenger/overview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOe-xBxP5HI This videoclip mentions Col. Thomas Charles Land (1828-1912), who wrote the Ballad of Tom Dooley (aka Dula). He was a grandson of Elizabeth Isbell and Jonathan Land. Elizabeth was the daughter of James & Frances Tompkins Livingston Isbell. Thomas C. Land's brother Linville Land made Tom Dula's coffin, on which Tom sat while riding in the wagon on his way to the gallows. Their second cousin Col. James M. Isbell, in the search party looking for Laura Foster, found her body in the shallow grave and also helped track down Tom Dula. His son Rev. Robert Lee Isbell wrote the story in "The World of My Childhood." Tom Dula was a grand-nephew of John Dula who got into a brawl with Col. Thomas Isbell (grandfather of Col. James M. Isbell) on Nov. 28, 1796 during which Dula bit off Tom Isbell's earlobe. There are several videos on Youtube which include Isbells. _________________________________________________________________ Type your favorite song. Get a customized station. It's my understanding that Discretion Howard Isbell died in 1848, not 1818. Her tombstone must be getting hard to read. She was the daughter of Benjamin Howard and Prudence (Sater), and born 1764. http://www.charlotte.com/mld/observer/news/local/states/north_carolina/counties/catawba/15673162.htm The Charlotte Observer (Charlotte, NC), Oct. 4, 2006: Peace in the Valley by Hannah Mitchell "Off N.C. 268, near the Wilkes County line, you will pass by churches dating as far back as 1875 in curve after curve of the gently winding country roads. There are several links below in the original post to legal records that list the Isbells in Alabama before 1819, the main criterion for membership which descendants may cite as proof. They will have to provide their own documentation to prove their lineage, however. To my knowledge, only two or three of Godfrey Isbell's many children can be proven through documentation. One son was Dr. Jeptha Vining Isbell who lived in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa and had much to do with the early history of those towns, was later a state legislator, etc. Somewhere there may be a record proving his residency prior to 1819, but I don't know of any descendants of his anyway.
