It is my sad duty to say that longtime Isbell genealogist Sarah Coon passed away last night. Her son Anthony Dalton emailed me today that she died unexpectedly but peacefully and asked that in lieu of flowers, a donation to the ALS Society would be the best way to remember her. Dear Ray, Thank you for writing. What a wonderful person Sarah is, and what a friend we have had in her! Her friendship is a great privilege. Sarah did wonderful research work. I treasure the correspondence which I had with her, and the times to spend with her in discussion. She had more knowledge of the Isbell family than anyone. The help which I received from her will be a constant guide to me in my work on writing about the Isbells. Does anybody know whether Dr. Raymond E. Isbell, author of a number of religious books, was a son or grandson of Travis Isbell (1902-75) of Tuscumbia, Alabama? I read that Dr. Raymond E. Isbell was baptised at the Spring Valley Church of Christ there, and that's where Travis was a church elder. Travis was the son of Benjamin Birdwell Isbell, son of James H. Isbell (1833-1902), son of James and Elizabeth Birdwell Isbell, my ancestral uncle and aunt of mine.
Dear Ray, Thank you for your message. I don't recall hearing about this man. Thomas Isbell was my 5th great grandfather. My only connection to him is through his service in the Revolutionary War and the military land grants he was awarded for his service. I've spent the last twenty-three years digging into my Isbell roots; the most productive of which have been the last few. Thomas Isbell enlisted in Captain Thomas Walker's 9th Virginia regiment and afterward in Captain William Henderson's company. He enlisted April 10, 1776 and was apparently discharged some time in July of 1778, as his name was no longer on the rolls. This very information has been reported as the military service of another Thomas Isbell, husband of Discretion Howard, who lived in the same area during the same era. I sent for the file on this Thomas Isbell and found where his descendants had written numerous times seeking information on him and some of what they were given was the information on my Thomas Isbell. The Thomas Isbell, husband of Discretion Howard, "enlisted in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1775 under Captain Dalton, and served two years as private in the Virginia troops". This being a direct quote from the file I sent for and received on this Thomas Isbell. I believe it was my Thomas Isbell who really served under Captains Walker and Henderson. Here is a copy of one letter from the file of Thomas Isbell who married Discretion Howard: War Department Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C. November 19, 1913 Miss Emma L. Hampton 223 Inman Street Cleveland, Tenn. "The records of this office show that one, Thomas Isbell, served as a private in Captain Thomas Walker's Company, 9th Viginia Regiment, commanded by Thomas Fleming, Esq., and subsequently in Captain William Henderson's Company, same regiment, commanded by Colonel George Matthews. Revolutionary War. The term of his enlistment is shown as "2 years, from April 10, 1776," His name is bourn on the rolls from November 1776, to and including July, 1778, when he is reported as discharged. Nothing further relative to his service has been found on record. The records also show that one, Thomas Isbell, was a soldier in the Virginia Artillery, Revolutionary War. His name appears on the records under the heading: "A list of state soldiers and seamen, who have received certificates for the balance of their full pay, agreeable to act of Assembly passed November session 1781," which show relative to him as follows: "By whom drawn, William Reynolds; time, April 30, 1785; Sum, £76, s6, d3." George Andrews, The Adjutant General Form No. 70 A. G. D. The above military land grant belongs to the Thomas Isbell who married Discretion Howard. ........................................................................................................................................................ My ancestor, Thomas Isbell, is believed to be the father of Temple Elliott Isbell, Sr. The following excerpt is from a book entitled "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee from 1778-1791": from Appendix A: Thomas Isbell; III 486, assigned by Hardy Alway, Pvt. (W. B. says assigned by heirs of Hardy Atway) III 732, assigned by Arthur Smith, Pvt. (see below for more on this one) III 736, assigned by heirs of Abraham Duoster (or Decoster) Pvt. III 744, assigned by heirs of James Davis, Pvt. III 759, assigned by assigned by heirs of James Cannon, Pvt. (note says: Heirs of James Carrom). III 768, assigned by heirs of Henry Dickenson, Pvt. Note from "How to Use Appendix A": If this name appears only in this Appendix, it means the person did not hold a grant in Tennessee, but assigned his warrant for military service to someone else, and the grant was issued in the purchaser's name. If the soldier took up his own land the entry in Appendix A appears as: Ashe, Samuel, Capt: III 27 If the soldier assigned his land, the entry in the Appendix appears as: Abbett, John; see Bradley, James Bradley, James; III 472, assigned by John Abbett, Sgt. Not every North Carolina Revolutionary Soldier is mentioned, only those who had presented their warrants for payment prior to July 1791 are listed. There is a note which says that 2,227 other warrants had been issued, for which grants had not yet been made. In some cases the rank of the soldier was not given. The rank appears after the soldier's name wherever it was clearly stated. After grant No. 1369 the names and numbers in the Grant Book did not correspond to those in this list. Since the time of our research, however, a thorough restudy of the Land Records has been made by Mr. Quarles and his staff in the Tennessee Archives. It is possible that more information about the holders of the warrants based on these grants is now available. Abbreviations: G. B. - Grant Book W. I have included some information on my Hickman side of my family tree and as you can see they also served in the Revolutionary War and received military land warrants for their service. These lands are the only connection between Thomas Isbell and his son Temple Elliott Isbell. I have a copy of the original deed dated September 2, 1787 and it shows a map of the land survey with a handwritten description mentioning Thomas Isbell, (assigned by Arthur Smith above) and the 640 acres lying on the south side off Big Barren River. The deed was drawn by Thomas Hickman and witnessed by James Saunders and James Bradley. In June of 1803 Thomas Isbell, as power of attorney, signed in behalf of Sarah Bradley, the widow of James Bradley in the court of Stokes County, North Carolina. I have a scrap of paper in my cherished Isbell genealogy file which states: "Wm. Isbell can search the records at Gallatin and Carthage and if there is any conveyances from your Father to any person they ought to be registered at one or the other places as the law requires deeds to be registered in the county where the land lies or they can't be valid - (signed by) Thomas Hickman December 4, 1816." I also found an old newspaper article from the Carthage Gazette dated September 19, 1808 which reads: State of Tennessee, Jackson County, By virtue of a writ, Venditioni Exponas, to me directed, from the worshipful Court of said County, I shall Expose to sale, in the Town of Williamsburgh, on the first Saturday in November next, all the right, interest, & claim, that Thomas Isbell has to six hundred and forty acres of land, being on line Creek, of Barren River, said to begin in John Fraines field, taken be an original attachment by Daniel Hilton, to satisfy the sum of two thousand and eighty dollars, unless debt and costs should be previously satisfied. Perhaps this was John Lewis Isbell who was born in 1751 in Goochland Co., VA., son of William Isbell and Anne Dillard, and died 1796 Cumberland VA., married Ann Hannah Anderson on 17 November 1775 in either St. James Northam Parish, Goochland Co., VA, or Hanover Co., VA. I've read that he is shown as Lewis on most records. > From: skkidd@bellsouth.net > To: isbell@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2011 10:15:21 -0500 > Subject: Re: [ISBELL] last post re Lewis Isbell > > Oops--my last sentence in the post should have said "is worth noting" -- > hope it is worth something to someone! > > _____ > > From: isbell-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:isbell-bounces@rootsweb.com] On > Behalf Of isbell-request@rootsweb.com > Sent: Monday, February 21, 2011 3:00 AM > To: isbell@rootsweb.com > Subject: ISBELL Digest, Vol 6, Issue 1 > > > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. New information on Thomas Isbell (son of Benjamin Isbell and Lettice Hickman) September 9, 1808 Carthage Gazette State of Tennessee, Jackson County, By virtue of a writ, Venditioni Exponas, to me directed, from the worshipful Court of said County, I shall Expose to sale, in the Town of Williamsburgh, on the first Saturday in November next, all the right, interest, & claim, that Thomas Isbell has to six hundred and forty acres of land, being on line Creek, of Barren River, said to begin in John Fraines field, taken be an original attachment by Daniel Hilton, to satisfy the sum of two thousand and eighty dollars, unless debt and costs should be previously satisfied. Pr. fee 1 25. 4.3t. James Cook Sheriff. Source: http://www.genealogybank.com In the 1790s, a federal outpost known as Fort Blount was built about 10 miles (16 km) west of Gainesboro along the Cumberland River, in what is now the western part of the county. The fort served as an important stopover for travellers along Avery's Trace. Between 1807 and 1819, Williamsburg, a community that developed on the site of the fort, served as the seat of Jackson County. Early historical records of the county were destroyed by a courthouse fire on August 14, 1872. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_County,_Tennessee The above newspaper article about Thomas Isbell and his 640 acres in Jackson County, Tennessee is mentioned on a scrap of paper I have that reads: "Wm. Isbell can search the records at Gallatin and Carthage and if there is any conveyances from your Father to any person they ought to be registered at one or the other places as the law required deeds to be registered in the county where the land lies or they can't be vallid - December 4th 1816 - Tho. Hickman" This is the same land sold December 18, 1820 by Temple Isbell to Daniel Keith. The deed speccifies it is "a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Jackson, State of Tennessee..being part of a six hundred and forty acre survey granted to Thomas Isbell by the State of No. Carolina and bounded as follows..." This information is also listed in the book, "Genealogy of the Isbell Family" by Mary Isbell Scott on page 115. It shows "Thomas Isbell's War Record. It is directly above information listed for the Thomas Isbell who married Discretion Howard. This information is not for that Thomas Isbell but belongs to the one above. Several years ago I sent off for the Revolutionary War file on the Thomas Isbell who married Discretion and it shows that he served as a private under a Captain Dalton for two years between 1774 and 1776 in the Virginia troops. The first Thomas Isbell mentioned above (whom I believe to be the father of Temple Elliott Isbell Sr. is the one who served under Captain Thomas Walker and Captain William Henderson. The military war records seem to be combing the two as one and claiming all the war service under the second Thomas Isbell (that married Discretion Howard). Has anyone else sent off for these records who can comment on this? I have collected a lot of information over the years that seems to back up what I have found. Sharon Dallman

http://www.fnbtalladega.com/history.asp this website on the Isbell National Bank of Talladega, Ala., has some interesting old photos including a circa 1890 bank draft containing a photo of Robert Houston Isbell, then president. Also a picture of Capt. William Parke Armstrong who married Mary Alice Isbell. New York Times, Jan. 6, 1901, page 7: Capt. WILLIAM PARKE ARMSTRONG, President of the City national Bank of Selma, and the Isbell National Bank of Talladega, died at his home in Selma, Ala., yesterday, of gastritis, from which he had been suffering for some time. He leaves a son, Houston Armstrong, who is engaged in mining business in Montana; another son, the Rev. W.P. Armstrong of the Theological Faculty of Princeton College, and two daughters in Selma. He was a very wealthy man, and a leading spirit in South Alabama financial circles.” _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. Sharon, congratulations on your recent marriage and new name, and thanks for posting this. It is very interesting. I can't find much information on Washington Lindley Barre except that in 1860, when he was the town marshal of Bowling Green, he was also co-editor of the Bowling Green Gazette. The only titles that I've been able to find that he authored are these three: Life and Public Services of Millard Fillmore (Buffalo, NY: Wanzer, McKim & Co., 1856) Speeches and Writings of Hon. Thomas F. Marshall (Cincinnati: Applegate & Co., 1858) Lives of Illustrious Men of America, 2 vols. (Cincinnati: W.A. Clarke Co., 1859). The first two titles are at Googlebooks but the second one isn't. He died at just 47, so I wonder if you know what happened to him. This was three or four weeks before the great yellow fever epidemic of 1878 was in fullblown outbreak, with 5,000 or more deaths. So while that was my initial thought, he probably died too early for that to be the reason. The epidemic spread from New Orleans northward up the Mississippi River a month later. Two his poems, “Marcia Lindley,” dated April 4, 1875, and “Threescore Years and Ten,” are also refereced in the Kentucky Digital Library as being in the Strange Collection, Western Kentucky University. I wonder if Marcia Lindley was a real person, if you happen to know, and perhaps related to him? ---------------------------------------- > From: sidallman2010@hotmail.com > To: isbell@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2010 21:45:30 -0800 > Subject: [ISBELL] Michael Barre and Lettice Livingston Isbell > > > > > > > > Lettice Livingston Isbell was the sister of Temple Elliott > Isbell and the wife of Michael Barre.
