John, thank you for the reply. Your James and Elizabeth appear to be a few generations prior to mine but this is very interessting and could be my family. We have been totally "stumped" on our Erwin/Ervin family tree. My ggrandfather Robert Ervin was born in 1853 in McDowell Co. NC. His mother died at his birth, his father James died as an older man in Senior reserves in the War(or Homeguard) and he was an orphan. He was brought to Haywood County NC in 1867 by an older brother John Ervin, Civil War vet, who was born abt 1836 in SC(ref-Haywood Co Census 1870). John went on to to Tenn to locate relatives in 1883 and drops from our knowledge except he wrote, according to my grandfather, a few letters to advise he was remaining in Tenn(letters and info lost). These two brothers had an older brother, also a Civil War Vet, named also James who died in a home for Confederate veterans in Raleigh about 1905. I have never been able to determine which James Ervin/Irvin was the father of these men except for one clue: My ggrandfather Robert stated that his father re-married when he was 2 years old(1885) and had children of that marriage before the War. By the time his father and brothers went to war, he had a younger half-brother and sister in the home. This matches the record in McDowell Co where James Irvin married Elizabeth Jarrett in 1885. She is shown as Elizabeth Irvin in the 1860 Census of McDowell with children matching this description and next door to her father Killian Jarrett. Later in 1874, my ggrandfather listed his father as James Ervin and mother simply as "Elizabeth" on his marriage license to marry Nancy Cathey. Elizabeth could ahve been mother and/or step-mother. Obviously this family was in SC at some point prior to the Civil War but according to the Census records, Robert's father James was born in NC. If you see any connection to this long story, let me know and thanks--The spelling of "Erwin" came about with my grandfather and his brothers, as their father Robert never got to attend school with the war and reconstruction and was not sure how to spell his name--another branch of the family in Haywood still uses "Ervin" ---Ed Erwin, Arden, NC. -----Original Message----- From: John Ervin <jervin@evcom.net> To: IRVIN-L@rootsweb.com <IRVIN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, February 28, 1999 3:41 PM Subject: RE: [IRVIN-L] Irvin, Ervin & Urvin >I usually check records out if they involve Ervin's from North or South >Carolina. > >I have two Robert Ervin's who have a James Ervin and Elizabeth as their >parents: > >Robert Ervin #175 (b. 1706 in Ulster Prov, County Down, Ireland > d. 1774 in St. Johns Parrish SC) >His Wife: Susannah Ervin #176 (no info) >His Father: James Ervin #177 aka James Irvine (b. abt 1685 Ireland, d. >7/31/1776 about 3 o'clock, in South Carolina) >His Mother: Elizabeth James #178 (b.
