    1. Re: [IRVIN-L] Roll Call
    2. ED ERWIN
    3. Howdy again cousins. I think I answered the roll-call in the wrong format a few days ago so I'll try this again. I am trying to locate or properly identify which of the many James Irvin/Ervins was my gggrandfather. He was probably born in NC, and was in SC at some time prior 1850. He had three sons with his first wife. Her name may have been Elizabeth. He died in Homeguard or Senior Reserves in the Civil War. Three sons were: 1) James Jr? A Civil War Vet, died in a home for Confederate Veterans in Raleigh abt 1905 according to a letter my grandfather remembered but the letter was later lost. 2)John Ervin, as spelled in the 1870 Haywood County NC Census, also a Civil War Vet, moved to Haywood County with wife Sarah in 1867 during the reconstruction, brought his younger 14 year old brother with him. 3)Robert Irvin/Ervin/Erwin,my ggrandfather, b. 1-15-1853 in McDowell County,d. 1922. His mother died at or near his birth, thus orphaned and raised by an aunt or granny, Mahala Irvin, during the war.(Ref McDowell County Census 1860). An elder in this home was Lemira(or Lemaney) Irvin, born in Va. abt 1791. Robert was later brought to Haywood County with older brother John above where , in 1874, he married Nancy Cathey, dau of George W. Cathey and Mary Hargrove Cathey. George W. Cathey was son of William Cathey and Hannah Dyer Cathey. Returning to James above, father of these three men. He re-married according to my ggrandfather's story in 1855. In the McDowell County marriage Bond records is the marriage of James Irvin and Elizabeth Jarrett, dau. of Killian Jarrett, in 1855. They had two children before James went to War which matches my ggrandfather's account that there were children of several Irvin families in the home and two younger ones were his half-brother and sister. According to the 1860 Census of McDowell County, this would have been Eliza and Alfred Irvin. Eliza visited my ggrandfather Robert in 1885 then went on to locate Robert's brother John who had moved from Haywood Co NC to Tenn in 1883. Now if this is not confusing enough, when my ggrandfather, Robert, married Nancy Cathey in 1874, the marriage license lists his father as James Ervin and mother as "Elizabeth" and no maiden name given. So this could refer to either his real mother or step-mother. Robert's sons began using the spelling Erwin and Ervin in the 1890s, and thus my father has always spelled his name as Erwin. Other surnames I am researching for which I have good information back to the 1700s are CATHEY, LONG, HARGROVE/HARTGROVE, MANN, HENRY. Also beginning research in MacFRADY/FRADY, CARPENTER. Thanks, Ed Erwin, Arden, N.C.

    3. Hi folks, My future mother-in-law has taken ill and I'm gonna be out of town until Monday. Don't worry, I have a very good ally. His name is Wyndell Taylor. He's a published author. He has published "Land Records of Cherokee County Georgia". There are seven volumes so far. May be more later. Another good quality is that he's an experienced list maintainer, and <G> my cousin. He will be handling the admin duties for the week-end and can be reached at wot@atl.mediaone.net if you have any problems. But, I hope you will carry on with the genealogy research. 1. [IRVIN-L] My IRVINE's ...
    2. Hi all. I'm researching the line of IRVINE's from William IRVINE & Phoebe HANNA. They had at least four sons (we believe that there were 9 children in all) ... so far we think they were: 1. George IRVINE married ?Margaret. Ended up dying in Los Angeles Co., CA of heart disease. Had a son who was a physician in Edinburgh, Scotland, who died about the same time as he did around 1892. 2. James IRVINE married (1) Henrietta RICE and (2) Margaret BYRNE. The city of Irvine, CA (Orange Co.) is named for him and the huge ranch that he had there. Born in Ireland, moved to New York then on to San Francisco. Had sons: James, Harvey. Son James had three children: James, Kathryn & Myford. We believe that there was also a connection to some IRVINE's in West Virginia. 3. Samuel IRVINE married Mary Maitland MCCALLA. Lived in Calaveras Co., CA for awhile and had a family. The couple had four children: John, Phoebe, William & Susan. (this is my husband's line) 4. William IRVINE married Jane. Don't know much about this group, except for the fact that they were in California. If any of this looks familiar to anyone ... please contact me!!! Amy

    2. ED ERWIN
    3. Howdy cousins! My name is Ed Erwin. I was born and raised in the beautiful countryside of Haywood County NC. My family surnames are all from Haywood County NC since the late 1800's. At present I am searching to properly identify which of the numerous James Ervin/Irvin/Irvines was my gggrandfather. It appears the more common spelling in my family prior to 1900 was Irvin/Ervin. My James died in Homeguard or Senior Reserves in the Civil War. He had three children of his first wife, she was possibly named Elizabeth. She died at or near my ggrandfather's birth (Robert) in McDowell County NC in 1853. Two older sons of this marriage were Civil War Vets: James Jr? died in a home for Confederate Vets in Raleigh abt 1905. And John, who brought brought Robert with his family to Haywood County in 1867 where Robert married Nancy Cathey, dau of George W. Cathey, b. 1-27-1829, d. Civil War, and Mary Hargrove Cathey. George Cathey was son of William(One-eyed Billy) Cathey and Hannah Dyer. John Ervin went on to Tenn in 1883 and is unknown since. Before leaving Haywood Co, he and Robert built many nice homes such as the Web Cathey Home. According to the 1870 Haywood County Census, John was a carpenter/farmer, born in SC. Surnames I am searching for which I have my lines back to 1700s are: Long, Cathey, Hargrove, Mann, Henry. Surnames I am searching for which I have limited information are Irvin/Ervin, Carpenter, MacFrady/Frady. My father's family has spelled the surname as "Erwin" since abt 1890. All records, which are few, due to Civil War burnings, indicate the spelling mostly as Irvin/Ervin prior to 1890. I have done a fair amount of research and have considerable information provided to me by other researchers regarding the well-known Erwin family of Burke Co. NC, Mecklenburg Co. NC, and York Co. SC., but my James does not appear, at least on the surface, to fit into any of these lines. A special thanks to Donna for this wonderful list. Ed Erwin, Arden, NC.

    3. I share the same IRVINE line as Julia, with the exception being that my line is through Elizabeth IRVINE, b. 5 Jan 1760, dau. of David IRVINE and Jane KYLE of Bedford/Campbell Co., VA. Additionally, Elizabeth's sister, Magdalene, was the second wife of John PITMAN, a gggg-grandfather. My main interest is in tracing the line back from David and Jane. Associated families I'm researching include PITMAN, KYLE, ROBINSON, TALBOT, HAILE, and SMITH. Dick Mason Colorado Springs, CO
