Am searching for IRVINs in Southwest Virginia (Wythe County, Bland County, Smyth County, etc).
I'm searching for info on my g-g-grandmother Matilda Irwin (b.ca.1795 in NC), her parents, etc. The information I've gathered on her is as follows: Matilda Irwin, b.ca.1794 (in NC per Censuses in IL---"Ro" per the marriage reference found on one of the FTM CD's cited below---I've seen reference made to Irvin/Irwin variants in Rowan Co., NC) She married John Wells (b.ca.1795 in NC per Censuses in IL and FTM CD's marriage reference) in NC in 1824. Yates Pub., Source:#475.000, Source Type:Electronic db, # of pages:1, Submitter Code HJW. Children I'm aware of include: Matilda Wells (my great-grandmother who disowned my grandfather), b.ca.1834 in IL, married Benjamin Hahn, son of David and Mary (Hubbard) Hahn, Nov. 23, 1854, at Whitehall, Greene Co., IL. Anderson Wells, b.ca.1833 in IL, married Jane Hahn, dau. of David and Mary (Hubbard) Hahn, Oct.1, 1865, Greene Co., IL. John Wells, b.ca.1835, IL. James Wells, b.ca.1838, IL. >From the date of Matilda Irwin's marriage to John Wells I would expect there were other older children (possibly born in NC). I'm trying to verify the parents and siblings of James Irvin b 1829 prob SC. I believe his father was John Irvin that was enumerated on the 1840 Tusc. census. There was one female in the family she was under 5 - I believe her name was Mary. James was married to Sarah Elizabeth Lucky on April 18 1851 in Tuscaloosa AL. Last name was spelled Urvin on the marriage record. They left for Winn Parish LA about 1854/1855. James died in Winn Parish about Nov of 1869. Any info or leads appreciated Lyn
Searching for information on John IRVIN b. Pittston, PA 1857, m. Maria MCANDREW 1 July 1887 in St. Mary's Church, Pleasant Valley, PA (now Avoca, PA) based on their marriage license. The spelling of the IRVIN name has taken on many spelling such as IRVING, IRWIN and ERWIN in obituaries and by various relatives. It is believed they had two children Ann & Peter. Peter m. Marjorie NEALON about 1925 and their name was spelled ERWIN and they resided on South Webster Ave. in the 1926 to 1938 Scranton City Directory. Any help will be graciously accepted. Jim
Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. Hope you all find that illusive weak link in your family chain. My most wanted is more information on my g grandfather John Daniel Irving born about 1848 in GA. The 1880 census shows him living close to what I believe are other family members, however, I have no other proof of that. The one most promising is a Polly Irving living next door age 55. I believe this was his mother. It shows her born in GA with both parents born in GA. I don't have a clue what her maiden name was. Any and all help will be appreciated. donna
Course I remember you, Jim. How can I forget. You were subscribing within an hour of its announcement !!! A roll call sounds pretty good except I wouldn't want to put a string of messages in the archives with roll call in the subject line. The subject line is what the search engines try to locate first. Maybe we could call it an ancestral search and put the name of our most wanted in the subject line. What cha think? donna -----Original Message----- From: Jim <jmcand@usnetway.com> To: IRVIN-L@rootsweb.com <IRVIN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, July 02, 1999 2:22 PM Subject: Re: [IRVIN-L] Where's our mail >Hi Donna, > >Maybe you should have a Roll Call and have everyone post their queries. >Remember, I was the first subscriber to the IRVIN mail list. > >Good Luck, > >Jim McAndrew >

It's possible I have a Matilda Irwin from Rowan Co. Matilda (b.ca.1793-4 in NC) and husband John Wells (b.ca.1795 in NC) were in IL by about 1833 judging from census records listing their son Anderson Wells (b.ca.1833 in IL). By the 1850's if not earlier they were in Greene Co. (southwestern IL), where their daughter Matilda married my great grandfather Benjamin Hahn on 11/23/1854. the Family Tree Maker, cd 403, lists a marriage in NC between John Wells(b.1795 NC) and Matilda Irwin(b.1793 Ro). Rowan Co. seems as reasonable an explanation of what "Ro" means for a place of birth as any. Take a look at what little I have on Matilda and see if it looks like there is any connection. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/a/h/Harold-F-Hahn/index.html If I am slow in responding just put it down to my being away from home in Virginia out on the road in NC with a new laptop I'm still training. Jillian, I am not connected to your Dr. John Irvine but I live in Mercer Co., PA and have access to 16 volumes of cemetery records. Your Dr. John Irvine is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Sharon PA next to a Mary W. Irvine. John was 63 when he died and Mary died at age 79 in 1900. I hope this helps you.
