    3. Hi, am new to list but have been researching Wicklow ancestors for a year or two, and have been corresponding with a few listers, which has been very much appreciated. Am posting my interests in response to Cara's challenge for a new roll call. I am researching my great great great grandparents: Daniel Hunt 1795-1857 and Ann Groves c. 1795-1877 were married on January 11, 1820 (according to info from a family Bible). Ann was said to come from Wicklow, Daniel from Cork. They came to the Smith's Falls area of Ontario between 1830 and 1833. They lived in neighbouring Kitley township from at least 1839 to the end of their lives. Catherine Wright of the Wicklow Family History Centre searched the records of Clonmore Roman Catholic Parish last year for me and as well as C of I and other religious records. While she did not locate a marriage record, she did find find RC baptismal records for three children of Daniel Hunt and Ann Groves in the Clonmore registers, their residence was given as Aghold: Child: CATHERINE Father DANIEL HUNT HUNT Baptised 1821-07-04 Mother ANNE GROVES Godfather THOMAS MURPHY Religion RC Godmother MARY DAVIS Child ANNE Father ? HUNT HUNT Baptised 1828-04-27 Mother ANNE GROVES Godfather Religion RC Godmother ELLEN BYRNE Child JOHN Father DANIEL HUNT Baptised 1830-09-12 Mother ANNE GROVES Godfather PAT DOYLE Religion RC Godmother BETTY BYRNE RC Baptismal records were also found for three children born to a Michael and Ellen Hunt nee Butler also of Aghold, between 1824 and 1830. According to the marriage register of Clonmore R.C., Michael and Ellen were married on February 2nd, 1816, so it is likely that this couple had more children before 1824. Considering that RC Hunts were not common in the area and that Michael was of the same generation as Daniel Hunt (my great great great grandfather), it is possible that he and Michael were related. Interestingly, Daniel's second son, b. 1835 in Leeds Co. Ontario, was named Michael. The first son, John, was born in 1830 in Wicklow as you see above. Perhaps this was Ann Groves' father's first name? It is also possible that the marriage record from 1820 and those of the other children born in the 1820s in Ireland (Margaret Ann born Sept 26, 1823 and my great great grandmother Mary's Feb. 27, 1826 occurred elsewhere or are lost. One intriguing piece of information which I have yet to follow up was a search I did some time ago on the Co. Wexford Heritage and Genealogy Society web-site was the baptism of a Mary Hunt in 1826. I have no idea if this could be my Mary's, but Wexford as you know was very close to Aghold, Wicklow.) Interestingly (once again!) Barbara Dowling of this list shared this bit of info, about another Aghold Groves family of the era: garnered from the research of John O'Neill of Dublin from Church of Ireland records: JOHN and MARGARET GROVES > Known children : > 1. > MARY GROVES bapt. 10th March 1805 > 2. > ABARAHAM GROVES bapt. 23rd May 1794 > 3. > ANN GROVES bapt. 8th August 1799 (could be 1798 also as area is damaged). I am interested in the Ann, of course! Another piece of interesting news is that according to a shirt-tail cousin's notes, after Daniel Hunt's death in 1857, the George Code family (of Aghowle, Wicklow) provided housing for the widow Ann (Nancy) Groves Hunt in Kitley Ontario. She died in 1877. Until her death she was always described as an RC on census records. The Codes were a Protestant Wicklow (Aghold) family. Some Groves who came on the Peter Robinson ships in 1825 to a nearby area in Ontario were also Protestant. I am wondering if perhaps my Ann was baptised in the Church of Ireland but converted to Catholicism on marriage to Daniel Hunt in 1820. Is any one else researching the Groves of Aghold, the Hunts of Aghold, or the George Code (b. 1811)-Jane Johnston family of Kitley, Ontario that could perhaps shed some light on my quests? Many thanks in advance!
