In response to Cara's invitation: Seeking info on James Kavanagh b. about 1830 in Wicklow (or Wexford or Carlow). He was in Chicago, Illinois, USA by 1863. Seeking info on his sibling Margaret Kavanagh b.1837 in Carlow, a Sister of Mercy in Rhode Island USA by 1862. Seeking info as to their parents, other siblings, etc. Their father's first name might have been either James, John or Charles. Thanks to the good people of this list, we have "found" James Kavanagh's wife, Margaret Byrne Kavanagh as one of a family who sailed from New Ross on April 15, 1851 to Quebec May 30th on ship Glenlyon: Patrick Byrne age 52 in 1851 (d.1867 Chicago, a "Native of Parish Hacketstown, County Wicklow, Ireland" to quote his headstone) Catherine Byrne Byrne Yes, a Byrne married a Byrne. Age 54 in 1851 (Have no information whatsoever after sailing. No grave.) Mary Byrne age 25 in 1851 (d.spinster 1896 buried Calvary Cemetery, EvanstonChicago) Michael Byrne age 22 in 1851 (Colorado miner 1880 Census) Elizabeth Byrne age 19 in 1851 (tutor to Colorado Governor' Evans' children, d."Eliza Marsh" 1889, buried Chicago) Margaret Byrne (Kavanagh) 16 in 1851 (married James Kavanagh in unknown year, 3 children survived, she died 1923 Chicago) Terence Byrne 12 in 1851 (Colorado miner 1880 Census) James and Margaret Byrne Kavanagh are my husband's ggrandparents. Since most of my own family research was done by cousins and given to me for the asking, I decided to try to research my husband's Irish family. It has been almost 4 years now. As you can see, we have had gratifying success thanks to this List. It has been frustrating to learn not one more thing about our Kavanaghs than we always knew. But, all in all it has been educational and rewarding and a lot of fun to learn from and laugh with the good people of the Wicklow List. Hello and Happy New Year, Cara and all. Sharon
