Saturday Feb 19th 2000 ( Bray People) COUNTY Wicklow lost one of its golfing greats, with the death this week of Greystones man Jimmy Martin. OBITUARY A leading Irish golf professional in the 1960s and early 1970s, the late Jimmy Martin is one of a handful of Wicklow men to have had the distinction of being selected to compete in the prestigious `Ryder Cup' tournament. He was a member of the 1965 British and Irish team which played at Royal Birkdale G.C. and lost to an American team which included such golfing greats as the legendary Arnold Palmer and Billy Casper. Carroll's winner And Jimmy Martin was also a winner of the Carrolls International, an event which preceded the Irish Open and for many years was Ireland's premier golfing tournament. He was a popular winner of that event in the early 1970's, seeing off a field of top Irish and international competitors in a tournament which was staged on his doorstep - at Woodbrook G.C. in neighbouring Bray. Jimmy Martin lived for several years in Britain, and worked for a period as the assistant professional to Arthur Lees at the world famous Sunningdale Golf Course. A talented golfer who was noted for his natural swing and accuracy with iron shots, Jimmy Martin retained his love for the game, and his golfing touch right up until his final illness. He died on Monday morning at St. Columcilles Hospital in Loughlinstown, and was buried at Redford Cemetery following funeral mass on Wednesday (yesterday). Jimmy Martin is survived by his son Glenard.
