I decided to do a bit of counting. The book was published in 1990. I'd guess that his church-count is quite accurate, but I've often discovered graveyards which he didn't list (not Wicklow, just "in general") and so I'd be inclined to add 5 or 10 percent to the graveyard count. Anyway, in his book - for Co. Wicklow only - he shows 96 total graveyards. He lists 36 Churches of Ireland, 23 of them have attached graveyards. There are also 47 RC churches, but only 8 of them are shown with adjacent graveyards !!! There are 11 other denomination churches in the county. I'm not qualified to answer any of the remaining questions - I'll leave that to others. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
Pete mentions 47 RC churches, only 8 with graveyards. Where were Catholics buried? Lets clarify these burials a wee bit please-- to begin with what time frame are we looking at ? are we looking at County Wicklow ? or just Wicklow Town itself? I can assure you that no research should leave any stone unturned therefore a trip to the RCB to check registers of the Church Of Ireland denomination does hold RC Methodist and other denomination burial details.... but you will need to know the name of the person because it does not simply say he was of the RC faith it may say a RC priest was present or a Methodist man presided etc.... And Peter has given you very good advice in his mail but lets clarify a few dates here please. Cara
