It would depend upon the time frame for in the beginning the priest went to the house to baptise a child, it may well have been a neighbour or a relative moving on in the century when baptisms were done at a church, the child was presented to the priest for baptism ( without the mother) something about mothers not being clean etc ..........medical and I would imagine I as a mother wouldnt be just letting anyone go off with my baby so then it would be a very close family member you would think that was presenting the babe for Baptism now I speak of RC here My main work having been with Protestant and thats easy they didnt until very late in the years have sponsors. Sorry fold had a lot of data to post but my provider has failed me yet again so doing this form another avenue hoping it will be fixed by tomorrow CHeers cara Original Message: ----------------- From: Yvonne yvonner@optushome.com.au Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2005 10:53:24 +1000 To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Wicklow] BAPTISM SPONSORS I have seen this topic discussed on another list and I'm interested to know what the usual practice was in County Wicklow. What was the likely relationship of the sponsors to the child baptised? Brother, sister, aunt, uncle or family friend etc. Yvonne ==== IRL-WICKLOW Mailing List ==== Stick to the lists Golden Rule and you will never go wrong, Co Wicklow genealogy~history~news~ and be nice to one another. ============================== Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the areas they lived.
