From what I understand, Presbyterian is often a Scot bread religion. I wonder if, yet again, mother's maiden name is culture based. -----Original Message----- From: Susan Marshall [mailto:susan_e_marshall@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, October 21, 2005 04:01 To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Wicklow] Church of Ireland naming I've had a look at my C of I families in Wicklow and other parts of the country, and there doesn't seem to be a particulary rigid system. A general patern in my family is as follows: 1st son named after his paternal grandfather 2nd son named after his maternal grandfather - or his father 3rd son named after his father - or his maternal grandfather 1st daughter named after her paternal grandmother 2nd daughter named after her mother 3rd daughter named after her maternal grandmother After 3 sons and 3 daughters the naming sequence generally seemed to break down - and more unusual names crept in - one family has a Jemima, Annabella and an Edith, as well as the usual Jane, Mary Anne, Elizabeth and Sarah. In my experiance the Presbyterians tended to incorporate the mother's surname either as a first name or a middle name into the child's name - both for boys and girls. Sometimes this has passed down though to the next generation. My grandfather and 2 of his cousins, were given their paternal grandmother's maden name as a middle name. Hope this is of some help - I'm looking forward to a more definative answer - perhaps!
