    3. WICKLOW INTRO PORTERS DIRECTORY Wicklow is a maritime county bounded on the East by St. George's Channel, on the South by Wexford and a small intersection of Carlow, on the West by Kildare and Carlow, and on the North by South County Dublin. Its greatest breadth is about 29 miles and its greatest length 41. In extent and population it exactly equals the Isle of Man, but is much more fertile. It comprise 496,000 acres of land and 1,500 of water. It has a coastline of about 40 miles ( from Bray to Arklow), in many parts precipitous. Inland it is very mountainous, forming a considerable section of the South Eastern mountain chains of Ireland. Minerals of various kinds abound throughout the county- granite, mica-slate, clay slate, quartz rock, trap porphyry, copper, and lead. The principal manufacturers are the High explosives, cordite, sulphur, &c., of Messrs Kynoch, of Arklow and Birmingham; the Tigroney Copper and Sulphur Mines, Woollen Mills of Ovoca, Granite Quarries, where stone sets are made for the Dublin and other corporations; the works on the Dublin and Wicklow Manure Company; flour, corn, and saw mills, and the manufacture of chicken and pheasant food by Messrs. Taylor, of Tinahely. There are capacious harbours at Bray, Wicklow, and Arklow, where a considerable export and import trade is carried on. The scenery throughout the county is of surpassing beauty, and attracts visitors from all parts of the world. Mountain, lake, wood, and river abound on every side. Many of the most distinguished members of the nobility, clergy, gentry and professional classes reside in the county. Delicate shrubs that pine in other parts of Ireland flourish in Wicklow. In former times the Fisheries of Wicklow gave employment to a large number of people, but for a number of years the industry has not been prosperous. Signs, however, are now abundant that a change for the better may be shortly expected. There is an excellent service of trains between Dublin, Bray, and Greystones, but the Southern portion of the county is very much neglected by the Dublin and South Eastern Railway, which is a serious loss and inconvenience to the inhabitants of the district. The county has two representatives in Parliament. Ecclesiastically the county is comprised with the Diocese of Dublin, Glendalough, Ferns, Kildare and Leighlin and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ossory, Ferns, Kildare and Leighlin. The county comprises eight baronies- Arklow, Ballinacor, North Ballinacor, Ballinacor South, Newcastle, Rathdrum, Shillelagh Talbotstown lower , Talbotstown Upper. The population is 61,500, of which 49,000 are Catholics, 11,500 Episcopalians, 515 Presbyterian, 485 Methodist. Statue acres, 498,000, of which 91,000 are under crop; 250,000 grass;18,000 woods and plantations; bog 4,000; marsh, 11,000; barren mountain, 112,000. WICKLOW COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS:-Messrs.
