What you have is a transcript from a database. It may say civil birth record - but it is not an original copy. An official Civil birth record does not record sponsors. The headings of an official civil birth record has the following headings - Births Registered in the District of - In the Union of- in the County of - Date and place of birth - Name (if any) - Sex - Name and Surname and Dwelling Place of Father - Name and Surname and Maiden Surname of Mother - Rank or Profession of Father - Signature, Qualification and Residence of Informant - When Registered - Signature of Registrar - Baptismal Name if added after Registration of Birth and Date - So as Paul Gorry states there is never a record of sponsors on civil birth records. I would reckon that the transcript you have - has mistakenly titled the informant of the birth as the sponsor. The informant was often the mother or the father - so it is likely in this case that the father was the informant.
