Thanx, Paul -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Cara_Links Sent: Thursday, May 28, 2009 2:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] PLACE DIVISIONS OF IRELAND Just to confuse you a few crazy but true facts. There are 327 baronies in Ireland and they more or less correspond to the tribal lands held before the coming of the Normans in 1172. Tribal lands of all the septs can be ascertained There are 2,428 civil parishes in ireland and most corresposnd to the Church of Ireland Parishes. Catholic parishes tend to be somewhat fewer but larger but where those civil parishes are situated. On an average a parish consists of around 24 townlands. City parishes consist of a small area. The 60,462 Townlands in Ireland vary in size from a few acres to a few of several thousand acres in moutainous areas. They have been recognized as administrative units by local government since the Ordnance Survey maps were drawn between 1825-1846. The word Bally, which is Irish Baile appears in 7,000 townland names. The Counties of Ireland were iniated in 1210 by King John and were completed in 1605 when Wicklow was named a County. So thats my trivia for today Cheers Cara *************************************** 1- Only leave in the body of the mail what is relevant to your answer 2- Change the SUBJECT LINE to suit the body of your own Mail to List. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message I use BullGuard Spamfilter to keep my inbox clean.
