    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] Byrne, James Myles - seeking advice
    2. Whillans
    3. Dear Ire-Wicklow Listers, I would like to continue along the List's Byrne threads, in the hope of getting some advice. My wife's greatgrandfather was James Myles Byrne born 1828-29 (from marriage cert) in Aghavannagh (from his gravestone, which suggests b1821-22) near Glendalough along an old military road constructed by the English in their attempt to contain the Irish rebels in the Wicklow hills; his parents were farmer Mathew Burnes(!) & Anne (from his death cert). Searching the recently available BMD indices, there are two matches for James Byrne (plus variants) b1821-1829 Wicklow pa Mathew; these are b1828 & 1829. There is one match for Mathew Byrne (plus variants) b1796-1804 Wicklow, namely b1801. James Myles Byrne migrated to Victoria Australia, while reputably (from family lore) his one sister Mary and seven brothers (unknown given names) migrated to America, all moving because of the potato famine. James married Mary Jane Barry on 17jun1862 at Port Belfast (Port Fairy) Victoria Australia shortly after his arrival. They sheep-farmed during 1866-78 at Wickliffe & Glenthompson near the Grampians in Victoria, later moving to Dunkeld where he succeeded financially, then they moved to Moyhu just S of Wangaratta where they ran a general store; he was buried a little N of this at Milawa during 1909. My attempts to find more about James Myles and his parents Mathew & Anne have been quite futile. A visit to Aghavannagh and its truly delightful nearby Roshana cemetery, searching the Griffiths Valuation, keeping my eyes open in the Byrne Rootsweb List, foolishly (in hindsight) paying good money in 1993 to the County Wicklow Heritage Society at the Courthouse Wicklow for a continuing search, have all come to nought. Unless a Lister has a better suggestion, I fear my only course of action is to pay the 3 x 5 Euro to get the three birth certificates indicated in my 2nd para. What information might I get which I don't already have? I reckon any reader who has got this far might be sensing my frustration - I haven't got anywhere in Wicklow over two decades. Maybe you might be able to offer me some advice, eg: give up, pay up, or ... ? Frank Whillans Skype whillans42 Melbourne Australia 3084
