Hi Bill If you look at www.logaimn.ie they have help for all the placemanes in Ireland. Murrough in Irish seems to be Muirbheach or Mhuirbhigh and there is a name MacMurrough as Fearann Mhic Mhurchú Any Irish scholars? Sorry to butt in, but it's actually www.logainm.ie - AINM (pronounced ANN-M) being the Gaelic for "name". And that, plus a few other sentences, is the extent of my Irish language knowledge! Murrough derives from a proper name - the area in Wicklow was probably named after a Murrough who settled there - Murrough is mentioned in connection with Brian Boru sometimes as brother sometimes as son - the English name meaning is usually given as "sea warrior" or something along that line... Can Murrough or Murchadh be anglicized to Murray? Some tell me that MURRAY is a Scottish clan name and can't be Irish, but from what I see there are almost as many centuries of Murchadhs as any Norse or Norman name. Anyone have a thought?
